From Mary Tyler Moore’s black capri pants to the waist-cinching corsets on Bridgerton, the costumes on television’s hottest shows over the past 70-plus years have influenced what we wear more than viewers may realize. That’s the premise of Hal Rubenstein’s just-released book, which is sure to spawn an escapist deep dive by even the most casual TV fan.
Dressing the Part: Television’s Most Stylish Shows (Harper, $36) explores the costume design of 50 high-profile TV series, from I Love Lucy and The Donna Reed Show in the 1950s, to Downton Abbey, Sex and the City, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and others. But it was Bridgerton that inspired the idea for the book. “Harper wanted to do a book on Bridgerton’s costume design, and my feeling was that it was a period costume show that [didn’t relate yet],” Rubenstein told The Hollywood Reporter. “I thought we would see the ramifications...

For those hoping to become costume designers, some of the industry’s top craftspeople have some advice to pass along.
“There isn’t one singular path to finding your way through this industry, I think if you probably asked every one of us we would come to it from a different background – my degree is in architecture,” costume designer Leah Katznelson, an Emmy nominee this year for “Fleishman Is in Trouble,” tells Gold Derby during an exclusive video interview for our Meet the Experts: Costume Designers panel. “I would probably say bring what your interests are, don’t shy away from it, because it might not be what you studied. If you have an interest in art, literature, history, language, anthropology, sociology, or any of those fields, you can draw on those resources all the time when developing character, so bring everything in and jump in, and it’s not too late to start.

Costume designer Donna Zakowska worked on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” for all five seasons of the Amazon Prime Video comedy and received Emmy nominations for each – with a win for Period Costumes for the second season of “Mrs. Maisel.” (Zakowska has another Emmy Award for “John Adams.”)
But the final season of “Mrs. Maisel” presented a host of new challenges for the acclaimed costume designer and 2023 Emmy nominee, namely a narrative that hopped between time periods and eras as viewers were given a chance to see the fates of Midge (Emmy nominee and past winner Rachel Brosnahan), Susie (Emmy nominee and past winner Alex Borstein), and many of the other beloved characters.
“The challenge was really condensing a lot into this last season and not losing the character,” Zakowska tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview as part of our Meet the Experts: Costume Designer panel. “It doesn’t...

Plenty of attention is dedicated to the Best Musical race during Tony Awards season, but how confident are you in predicting the design categories? These four races consistently yield surprise winners each year. Those surprises have the potential to completely derail your score in our Tony prediction contest, even if you manage to guess all of the acting winners correctly.
So let’s take a deep dive into the tough below-the-line musical categories that you’ll need to ace in order to score top marks on your 2023 Tony Awards predictions.
Scenic Design
There’s plenty of gorgeous scenic work in this category, but we can probably count out three contenders from the ultimate win. 59 Productions’ video design for “Camelot” is stunning, but Michael Yeargan’s minimal use of physical sets will keep it out of the running. Mimi Lien plopped “Sweeney Todd” in a gargantuan, industrial-themed pit, but some “Sweeney...

Costume designer Donna Zakowska was totally unprepared for the time jumps in the fifth and final season of Amazon Prime’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Stand-up comic Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) finally achieves stardom in 1961, yet we’re interrupted with glimpses of the future in wrapping up her story. This made Zakowska apprehensive and anxious when the scripts first came in from showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino and executive producer-writer Dan Palladino.
“I wondered how it was going to work, the idea of these flash forwards,” the two-time Emmy winner told IndieWire. “That was really rather drastic to suddenly project who was Midge and [manager] Susie [Alex Borstein] 30 or 40 years from when we knew them. It’s hard to know how to really portray that, and, luckily, we had a very good prosthetics team. I just tried to think what happened and what does that mean in terms of the clothes and the characters and adhering to different periods?...

Imagine a New York where construction workers tap dance on steel girders high above the city, sorta like that famous photograph you’ve seen a million times, and where kindly landladies who once played Carnegie Hall might tutor a young Holocaust refugee to a Julliard scholarship, and breezy jam sessions do away with generations of friction between races, genders and sexual identities. You’d go there, right?

Rose Weissman changed actor Marin Hinkle‘s perspective on how she appreciates art and style. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star recently opened up about how playing Rose made her look at art, style, and even humor differently after five seasons of the award-winning series.
“I wore sweatshirts a lot and wore sweat pants and kind of lived life in a very disheveled way,” she told Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “And I still primarily do that, but I pay more attention to art. I go to museums with a new look, and I let myself take in the visuals and people that put themselves together in ways that Rose does and that many of the characters on the show do and that [producer] Amy [Sherman-Palladino] sort of even presents and the way that they let visuals be so important.”

Multiple heavyweight series return this spring, which will have a big impact on the 2023 Emmy craft races, particularly with the final seasons of “Succession,” “Barry,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Star Trek: Picard,” and possibly “Ted Lasso.” Plus, “The Mandalorian” is back and should continue its craft domination, while there are opportunities for improvement for new seasons of “Yellowjackets,” “The Great,” “Schmigadoon!,” and “Perry Mason.”
Before looking ahead at potential opportunities, it’s worth noting past Emmy performances.

Emmy voting has closed, but for those who just can’t get enough, many costumes from Emmy-nominated shows have taken over the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (Fidm) Museum in downtown Los Angeles.
The exhibition showcases costumes from over 22 programs, 13 of which are Emmy-nominated in the three different award genres: period, contemporary, and fantasy/sci-fi. The series will run through Nov. 5.
Costumes on display include the iconic red swimsuit from Hulu’s “Pam & Tommy,” the regal gowns from “Bridgerton” and outfits worn by Jean Smart in “Hacks.”
Nick Verreos, Fidm chair of fashion design, highlighted some of his favorite outfits. Verreos tells Variety, “Of course, all of the costumes are highlights, but the Emmy nominees are the real stars of the show.”

For the six Emmy contenders on our Meet the Experts: Costume Designers panel, there is no one set starting point in their creative processes. “It definitely depends on the project,” “Euphoria” costume designer Heidi Bivens says during our group discussion with Sharon Long (“The Great”), Donna Zakowska (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Zaldy (“RuPaul’s Drag Race“), Christine Bieselin Clark (“Star Trek: Picard”) and Laura Montgomery (“What We Do in the Shadows”). “If it’s contemporary, I like to do a lot of people-watching and definitely get ideas from real-life characters. It’s just so specific to the project.”
When she joined “Euphoria,” Bivens did a lot of people-watching outside high schools, waiting for when school would get out to see what kids were wearing. She also turned to where kids really live these days: social media. “I can do a deep dive and go down that wormhole of social media, so...

Donna Zakowska has been the costume designer on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” since the beginning, winning an Emmy for her work in 2019. She’s nominated again this year for the fourth season and feels “very lucky” to have been able to track fashion changes and character development as the period series has moved through time.
“I think what’s great about it is that really developing these characters and just sort of portraying the various phases in their life and doing it through the costumes,” Zakowska tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Costume Designers panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). “It’s sort of a very lucky thing to be able to do that. You don’t usually have it. And so it’s been very sort of enjoyable. Doing that — it has really been subtle, the way we’ve developed, and really, very controlled, which is also sort of great.

“It’s what any actor would dream of,” shares Tony Shalhoub of his ever-evolving character Abe Weissman on Amazon Prime’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” In the fourth season, the former Columbia University professor starts a job as a theatre critic at the Village Voice, another major change for the role that the actor describes as a “luxury.” “It’s true of most of these characters on ‘Maisel.’ They evolve, they reinvent themselves, they’re forced to let go of things that have become part of their persona,” the four-time Emmy winner notes. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Shalhoub has appeared on Broadway eight times in the past four decades, not to mention his other stage work. The Tony winner for “The Band’s Visit” admits that the chance to “take on that mantle as Abe as a critic was really exciting,” joking that he feels it’s “payback time.

Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with Amazon, for this edition we look at how production designer Bill Groom, costume designer Donna Zakowska, and director of photography M. David Mullen created the exquisite period detail of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
As Season 4 of the Amazon series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” opens, stand-up comedian Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) finds herself at a crossroads. Fired from her job on tour with singer Shy Baldwin (Leroy McClain), Midge decides the time has come to be uncompromising in her career, and she finds a surprising outlet for the creative freedom that she craves: a bawdy strip club where Midge performs between acts, slowly attracting a female audience that is a source of both added income and new frustrations for the club’s owner.

Midge Maisel is back, and she's better than ever.
On The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4 Episode 1, things are looking pretty dire for Midge, out for revenge after Shy abandoned her on the tarmac.
Midge is nothing if not tenacious, though, and with Susie at her side, she's ready to change the way people view women in comedy.
It's such a pleasure when a high-quality show returns with the panache and pizzazz of its previous seasons.
The return of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has been highly anticipated (and delayed due to Covid) ever since the gut-punch of Season 3's finale.
The show is already off to a roaring start, giving Midge an epic, expletive-laden set at the Gaslight detailing her thirst for revenge. Midge is at her best when she's in the zone.
Two antisemitic Nazis walk into a bar, and one says to the other, "Who does your taxes?"

Midge and the gang are back with the fourth season of Amazon Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” The first trailer just dropped along with confirmation that the series will return on February 18, 2022. Season 3 left audiences with Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) and her manager Susie (Alex Borstein) on an airport tarmac after discovering they’d been dropped for their recent touring gig after Midge unintentionally outed headliner Shy Baldwin (LeRoy McClain).
“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” continues to have a devoted following, with last season being one of the series’ more ambitious as Midge finally secured her big break on the standup circuit. Because of that, the series expanded into the creation of original songs and an enhanced wardrobe.
In an interview with IndieWire last year, costume designer Donna Zakowska said, “We’re still dealing with the issue in this period that female comedians are not very glamorous. It’s just...

You might recall the success of last year’s “Maisel Day,” a one-day event in Los Angeles put on by Amazon Prime Video as part of their FYC campaign for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” You could get sandwiches, cupcakes, even a hotel room for the price they were in 1959. Suffice it to say it was a massive success — it isn’t a party unless the cops get called — and set the bar high for this year’s Emmy campaign.
Unfortunately, like most of 2020, the global pandemic put a monkey wrench into everything, including the Emmy plans for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” which is up for a whopping 20 Primetime Emmy Awards. But like Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) herself, they’re adapting and working with what they got. This year’s Emmys campaign seeks to remind you just what makes “Mrs. Maisel” so marvelous — virtually.

Rachel Brosnahan’s Midge finally got her big break as a stand-up comic in Season 3 of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” backing up popular crooner Shy Baldwin (Leroy McClain) in Vegas, Miami, and Harlem’s Apollo Theater in 1960 — and all this results in an upscale wardrobe change for Midge. “It’s a pretty big transitional season, I think, and it’s very much about performance and her look as a performer [in] different environments,” said two-time Emmy-winning costume designer Donna Zakowska, who’s currently writing a book about the Amazon Prime Video series.
In the first two seasons, Midge’s look was modeled after the movie star glamour of Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly. But, in Season 3, with her career moving beyond New York, her look becomes more theatrical. Staying elegant was too tasteful, according to Zakowska. “We’re still dealing with the issue in this period that female comedians are not very glamorous,...

The talent both behind and in front of the camera of Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” could have just been making sourdough bread and having Zoom meetings as they passed the time away while social distancing themselves as the coronavirus pandemic continues. Typically, they would be shooting Season 4 of show right about now as the sitcom that stars Rachel Brosnahan as an Upper West Side housewife turned stand-up comic further embraces the ’60s.

Quarantine sure stoked the creative juices of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” team. Normally, they’d be busy working on a new season of “Maisel” at this point. But since they’re following Covid-19 stay-at-home orders, the show’s dancers, musicians, cast and crew instead put together a 10-minute music video.
The video, which Amazon Prime Video will share with all TV Academy members on Monday, was the brainchild of “Maisel” creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, promotes the show’s Emmy For Your Consideration efforts but also doubles as a showcase to raise awareness and support for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, MusiCares, and Swans for Relief.

Donna Zakowska, the Emmy-winning costume designer, has dressed the ensemble cast for all three seasons of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” She won her trophy for the 2008 HBO miniseries “John Adams” and was nominated for the first season of “Mrs. Maisel.” On Season 3 of the Amazon Video show, as Rachel Brosnahan’s stand-up comic Midge goes on the tour with crooner Shy Baldwin (Leroy McClain), Zakowska’s wardrobe duties expanded exponentially.
“We definitely had I think something like 9,000 extras. I think the record in America, who knows? It could be in the world, as far as I know,” she says in our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above). “But we had an enormous, enormous amount of people. We had so many big scenes and the Uso show and all those things.”
Of course, Midge is still front and center as the main fashion plate although Shy gives her a run for her fabulous garments.

Last night, the Costume Designers Guild had their say in the Oscar race. The 22nd annual Cdg Awards were held and with only two of the five Academy Award nominees in the running here, all eyes were on this group to see if that might tell us anything. Well, that might just have happened, but not necessarily in the way that we were expecting. Did the race zig instead of zag? Read on for more to find out… The complete Costume Designers Guild Awards results are next, but the notable outcome (or at least the most notable outcome) was that in Excellence in Period Film, Jojo Rabbit and costumer designer Mayes C. Rubeo pulled an upset over presumed frontrunner Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood and costume designer Arianne Phillips. Could the Academy follow suit in February? Quite possibly. Nominees for the 22nd annual Costume Designer Guild Awards included frontrunning period pieces “Dolemite Is My Name,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and “Rocketman.” They were joined by “Downton Abbey” and “Jojo Rabbit.” This definitely bodes well for Ruth Carter (“Dolemite”) in her bid for a second consecutive Oscar following “Black Panther.”
However, surprise no shows were “Joker,” “The Irishman,” “Little Women,” and “Judy.” And, Deborah Cook, who became the first costume designer from animation to get nominated by the Cdga for her breakthrough work on “Kubo and the Two Strings,” was denied this time around for her great Victorian-era work on Laika’s stop-motion Oscar contender, “Missing Link.”
Contemporary nominees, meanwhile, included “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” “Hustlers,” “Knives Out,” “The Laundromat,” and “Queen & Slim.” But “Bombshell” didn’t make the cut.

The Costume Designers Guild has revealed nominees for its 22nd CDGAs, which celebrate excellence in film, TV, and short form costume design. Winners will be announced at a ceremony January 28 at the Beverly Hilton to be hosted by Mindy Kaling.
The guild previously announced that this year’s Cdga honorees include Mary Ellen Fields (Distinguished Service Award), Michael Kaplan, (Career Achievement Award), Adam McKay (Distinguished Collaborator Award) and Charlize Theron (Spotlight Award).
This year marks the first under new rules on the TV side in which designers now submit a single episode that best represents their work on a series.
Last year, Black Panther‘s Ruth E. Carter, Crazy Rich Asians’ Mary E. Vogt and Sandy Powell for The Favourite were among the film winners. Carter went on to take the honor at the Oscars.
Here’s the list of this year’s nominees:

Donna Zakowska has channeled some heavy-duty style icons in her work as the costume designer of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and the looks she creates for Rachel Brosnahan as Midge Maisel in season three, which premiered Friday on Amazon Prime Video, are no exception.
"The first season was a bit more Audrey Hepburn [for Rachel’s look], while for season two I got a little bit more into Grace Kelly,” Zakowska tells The Hollywood Reporter. "There’s a feeling of Grace Kelly still there in season three, but the first ...

The bond between American and Italian costumers has been a strong and long-lasting one that has contributed to some of the best-looking movies ever made, says acclaimed Italian costume designer Carlo Poggioli. “We are the country that has won the most Oscars, both for set design and costumes, after the Americans,” says Poggioli, head of Italy’s costume and production designers guild. “The Italian flag stands high.”
That bond will be celebrated with a master class series of panels set for Oct. 31, Nov. 13 and Dec. 5 at the City University of New York, in which Piera Detassis, president of Italy’s David di Donatello Awards — the country’s equivalent of the Oscars — will lead a discussion among Italian designers Poggioli and Milena Canonero (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”) and Americans Ann Roth (“The English Patient”) and Donna Zakowska (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”).

The sophomore season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” was a transitional one, with Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) and her family adjusting to new roles in 1959, and Emmy-nominated costume designer Donna Zakowska altering their wardrobes to suit the moment. In the opener (“Simone”), Rose (Marin Hinkle) ran away to Paris to revisit her bohemian past, and definitely looked the part. And, in the fourth episode (“We’re Going to the Catskills!”), Midge went to the annual summer retreat in the Catskills with an array of comfort clothes, unsure about her commitment to stand-up comedy.
“It’s about the indecisiveness of changing course: still wanting to be a child before making a very big adult decision to impact her whole life,” Zakowska said. Sure enough, Midge can’t even decide what to pack so she takes every outfit. “And the colors and the patterns really counter the heaviness of what was on her mind,...
