Queen Latifah stars in an easygoing romcom with a surfeit of sentiment. By Peter Bradshaw
Easy-going and sweet-natured, this "romantic sports comedy" finally dissolves into a gooey mess of over-cooked comfort food. Queen Latifah plays Leslie Wright, the physical therapist with a passion for basketball. Her super-hot roommate Morgan, played by Paula Patton (the inspirational teacher in Precious) is keen to be what we Brits might call a Wag: she's fixing to snag a basketball player as a husband, and both have a crush on NBA heavyweight Scott McKnight, played by hip-hop star Common (aka Lonnie Rashied Lynn Jr). Scott is dazzled by the beautiful Morgan; they get engaged, but when he picks up a serious injury, it is the entrancingly homely Leslie who has to massage him back to health, and Scott finds himself falling for her instead. It's a nice romantic triangle, but can't quite make up its...

For those who love sports and romantic comedies, "Just Wright," starring Queen Latifah and rapper Common, is now in stores on Blu-ray and DVD. The comedy is about basketball just as much as it's about a surprising, budding romance.
A romantic sports film starring three of Hollywood's most charismatic personalities, "Just Wright" follows Leslie Wright (Queen Latifah), a straight-shooting physical therapist who gets the gig of a lifetime working with NBA All-Star Scott McKnight (Common). Everything is going great until Leslie finds herself falling for Scott. Oblivious to her romantic overtures, McKnight is instead drawn to Leslie's gorgeous childhood friend Morgan (Paula Patton; "Precious"), who has her sights set on being an NBA trophy wife.
At the end of the movie, audiences find out if Leslie will always be "one of the boys" to Scott, or if he'll realize Leslie is just what he's looking for.

It was 1984 and Michael Jordan had been selected by the Bulls for the NBA Draft. Common (born Lonnie Rashied Lynn, Jr.) was twelve years old and had been chosen to be a ball boy for the Chicago Bulls. Growing up on the south side of Chicago, he dreamed of playing for the Bulls and a NBA career from as early as the age of eight. An injury to the cornea of his eye benched him. He turned to music.
The reception of Common’s debut album Can I Borrow a Dollar? was overshadowed by the huge success of his second outing, Resurrection, featuring the hit "I Used to Love H.E.R." His eighth album, Universal Mind Control, hit shelves back in 2008. His next album, The Believer, is expected later this year.

Just Wright is a rarity: An awful movie that I really, really don't want to pan. It'd be like booing a junior-high production of Oklahoma. Just Wright is hopped up on so much earnestness that my critical faculties have been neutralized. If someone slaved over a stove to make you soufflé, you don't tell them that you hate soufflé and throw it back in their face. You pretend to eat it with a smile on your face while feeding it to the dog under the table. That's how I feel about Just Wright.. Only an achingly thin-skinned person could've written this movie (Michael Eliot), and I don't want to hurt his feelings.

By Susan Granger - Quite simply: Queen Latifah's talents are wasted in this bland Cinderella-story set against a professional sports backdrop.
Newark, New Jersey-bred Leslie Wright (Latifah) is a hard-working physical therapist at a New York hospital on Roosevelt Island and die-hard basketball fan who just can't seem to find her Mr. Right. That is - until suave NBA All-Star Scott McKnight (rap star Common from "Date Night," "Terminator Salvation"), star of the (fictional) New Jersey Nets comes along. Although he's involved with Leslie's gorgeous, gold-digging god-sister, Morgan (Paula Patton from "Precious"), he winds up in her capable hands - literally - when a severe knee injury threatens to knock him out of the playoffs. Problem is: Leslie's a self-described "perfect homegirl," which means that, while she's a girl and a friend, she's not a girl-friend.

Chicago – Queen Latifah and the rapper Common put an interesting and necessary twist on the romantic comedy genre, but still cannot help but fall back on the recurring rom-com clichés that eventually undermines the new film “Just Wright.”
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Common is NBA superstar Scott McKnight, guiding the New Jersey Nets towards the playoffs. Queen Latifah is Leslie Wright (as in “Just…), a physical therapist and rabid Nets who just happens to “meet cute” Scott at a gas station after a game. This leads to an invitation to his birthday party – happens all the time – and Leslie brings her best friend Morgan (Paula Patton) to the celebration.
Morgan has made it her quest to marry an NBA player. She sees her opportunity in McKnight at his party and makes her move, leaving Leslie in the lurch. Scott and Morgan’s relationship blossoms, all the way to engagement, but a wrench is...

The three most excruciating experiences I've had at the movies in 2010 have all been romantic comedies: Leap Year, When in Rome and The Back-Up Plan. It's not that I dislike romantic comedies. I'm actually really fond of them, but I think it's safe to say that it has become Hollywood's laziest genre (horror remakes notwithstanding). So when Just Wright, starring Queen Latifah and Common, came up on my to-do list, I was not pleased. Happily, right from its first ten minutes, Just Wright had me feeling welcome and comfortable, and after twenty minutes I was effortlessly charmed.
So what's the difference? We can start with the lead character Leslie Wright (Latifah). Unlike her cohorts in the previous three movies, she's not desperate. She does not expend every fiber of her being pining for a boyfriend. (And in these movies, it's not just any boyfriend; it has to be Mr. Right.

The big news here though is that Queen Latifah, under the tutelage of director Sanaa Hanri, here assays her first major super-romantic lead role. She plays Leslie Wright, a primo New Jersey Net fan and ace physical therapist whose unreasonably gorgeous best friend Morgan Alexander (Paula Patton), steals away Nets superstar guard Scott McKnight (played by rapper Common, the artist once known as “Common Sense“), and then dumps him before the wedding after he tears up his knee.

In "Just Wright," Queen Latifah plays Leslie Wright, a physical therapist who shares a love of basketball with her friend Morgan (Paula Patton). Morgan, however, is more focused on the players than the game, so when both ladies attend a birthday for NBA star Scott McKnight (Common), guess which one flaunts herself to land the famous b-baller? And after McKnight is injured, guess which one nurses him back to health?...

Total rating for "Just Wright" - 2 out of 5 stars. This movie isn’t too hard. It isn’t too soft. But something about Just Wright isn’t right either. The drama is never intense enough to have you concerned about the characters. It’s never funny enough to be considered a romantic comedy. Queen Latifah plays Leslie Wright, a physical therapist who’s working on fixing up her house. She takes in her knockout godsister (Paula Patton), who doesn’t have a job but has a goal: marry a pro basketball player. Leslie likes basketball too, but she’s a fan of the game, not the bling. They go to a Nets game, befriend star player Scott McKnight (Common) and get invited to his birthday party. One gets involved with Scott. Guess which one? The other one is the woman it’s obvious he should be with. Guess which one?...

Plot: A physical therapist named Leslie (Latifah) just can’t find the right man. When Leslie’s god-sister’s boyfriend (Common) gets injured, she tries to nurse him back onto the court and ends up falling for him.
Who’S It For? Women who have felt like they are on the sidelines while every other girl gets picked to dance. As for fans of Common’s music, they might not want to see this side of him.
Expectations: I love basketball, so while a Queen Latifah romance didn’t get me excited, I was curious to see how they would portray an NBA superstar who gets injured and needs a comeback.

Besides the blatant lie portraying the New Jersey Nets playing in front of a sell-out crowd, Just Wright ends up being a nice little movie. What is billed as yet another romantic comedy, the 111 minute feature was relatively easy to get through. There were times it did feel tedious. Much like some aspects of physical therapy one must go through to reach the end result. Hopefully, all the hard-work and trivial tasks payoff.
Scott McKnight (Common) is one of the top players in the NBA. He's in a contract year with the New Jersey Nets and if he continues to play well, he hopes the team will re-sign him for the long-term. First off, what does Just Wright mean? Yeah, sure, the protagonist’s name is Leslie Wright, and she is destined -- hardly a spoiler! -- to eventually be seen as “just right” in the eyes of the male love interest, once he can see past her sparkling personality, luscious body, and outrageous mojo to get to the gorgeous woman “hidden” inside. But stlll, what does Just Wright actually mean? It means nothing. It’s wordplay that thinks it’s clever but simply makes you want to cringe. It’s insulting to the audience and irrelevant to the movie... or it would be, if the title didn’t just sort of sit there, hoping that you’ll find it charming without having to do any the work required to actually charm you.

It's only fitting that Queen Latifah's namesake chess piece is the one that can move in any direction. There's hardly a title this Queen doesn't own: rapper, actor, producer, and the author of two books, including the just-released "Put on Your Crown," a tome on self-esteem that falls somewhere between biography and self-help book. Born Dana Owens, Latifah was a teenager when she won raves for her 1989 debut album "All Hail the Queen," in which she announced her arrival with, "A woman can bear you, break you, take you/Now it's time to rhyme, can you relate to/A sister dope enough to make you holler and scream."Latifah soon transitioned into acting with a turn in Spike Lee's 1992 film "Jungle Fever." Eager to see a wider range of women represented on television, she co-created and starred in the comedy "Living Single," which ran for five seasons on Fox.

Queen Latifah is appealing as a romantic lead, offering an alternative image of what kind of girl can get the guy. Unfortunately, in her first straight romance, the feisty side of her personality has been benched in favor of likeability.
Latifah certainly is likable as Leslie Wright, a physical therapist who owns her own fixer-upper and drives a beat-up vintage Mustang. Everybody likes Leslie, including the blind date she meets early in the film. But after enjoying a lovely evening together, he suggests he’s less interested in dating her than hanging out. It’s a line she’s heard before and, at 35, she’s pretty much resigned she may never find “the one.”

The set-up for Just Wright, opening Friday, is familiar: the sensitive, funny friend who attracts the attention of someone of the opposite sex, seemingly out of her league. But there's a spark - at least until that person meets her better-looking best friend. When it comes to this kind of romantic comedy, Queen Latifah seems like a natural as the woman who men love to hang with - when they're not in pursuit of a woman they want to have sex with. In dating parlance, it's called "the friend zone," and it's like the penalty box of dating, when your only crime is not being buff and unobtainable. Latifah plays Leslie Wright, a New Jersey physical therapist and die-hard fan of the play-off-bound New Jersey Nets. (Given that the team a) sucks and b) is leaving the state soon, this seems like...

If you're like every other 25-year-old such as myself, Queen Latifah has been a part of your life in some way since you were about six. Starting out her career rapping about unity and slowly making her mark on Hollywood, Queen Latifah has earned that title over the years and her charm is keeping her going strong in 2010. In Just Wright, Latifah plays Leslie Wright (clever title, eh?) and gets herself into a love triangle with her best friend's man, injured NBA star Scott McKnight (Common), as she nurses him back to health. It's hard to put a finger on why, but as a dude who doesn't normally find these sort of films appealing, Just Wright looks surprisingly bearable. Maybe it's just my unconditional liking of Queen Latifah that's doing it. Check out the trailer below or in glorious HD over at Yahoo! Movies.
