2. Diverse casting in films boosts box office performance: CAA agent Talitha Watkins presented data by the agency that analyzed the diversity of film casts since 2014 and compared those films’ weekend box office performances to that of non-diverse films. The data show

Hollywood’s Invisible Minority: People With Disabilities Eager to Show Their Abilities

Hollywood’s Invisible Minority: People With Disabilities Eager to Show Their Abilities
Oscar nominations will be announced Jan. 24, and it’s likely the contenders will include black artists, and possibly some Latino/Hispanics and Asians. But there will be little to no representation for a major under-represented group — people with disabilities, or Pwd.

According to the Census Bureau, there are 57 million Americans with disabilities, or 19% of the population. TV hiring is about 2.4%. The film industry is worse, at 0.9%.

Scott Silveri is the creator of ABC’s freshman series “Speechless,” which stars Micah Fowler, who has cerebral palsy. Silveri tells Variety that Hollywood execs are not resistant to hiring: “Nobody is building walls. But disabilities are not getting enough attention. It’s as simple as that. When you consider the number of people with disabilities, you’d think this would be more of a conversation in town.”

Silveri was an honoree at November’s Media Access Awards, which honors industry hiring for Pwd. Silveri

Disabled Characters on Television: 95% of Roles in Top 10 Shows Played By Able-Bodied Actors — Report
A new study by Ruderman White Paper took a comprehensive look at the employment of actors with disabilities in television. Their findings concluded that 95 percent of characters with disabilities in top 10 TV shows are played by able-bodied actors, an act that, according to the Ruderman Family Foundation, reveals the “unjust and troubling discrimination of actors with disabilities in Hollywood.”

Co-authored by “Seinfeld” actor Danny Woodburn and Kristina Kopić, advocacy content specialist at Ruderman, the study examined 31 shows across all platforms, from streaming, cable and network, and also determined that only four actors with disabilities were cast during the 2015-2016 season, amounting to less than 2 percent of all actors on screen. With people with disabilities representing nearly 20 percent of the Us population, it concluded that they are the most underrepresented minority in Hollywood.

The comprehensive study on employment of actors with disabilities in television reveals the “unjust and troubling discrimination of actors with disabilities in Hollywood,” per the white paper commissioned by the Ruderman Family Foundation.

The study proves that people with disabilities are the most unrepresented minority in Hollywood.

However, disabled actors have not been included in ongoing conversations regarding Hollywood’s diversity crisis, which has brought light to providing more jobs for people of color and equal pay for women, both in front of and behind the screen.

The report was co-authored by “Seinfeld” actor Danny Woodburn and advocacy content specialist at the foundation, Kristina Kopić. Hundreds of actors with visible and non-visible disabilities were surveyed for the study, which points to that people with disabilities represent nearly 20% of the U.S
