Sterling K. Brown Opens Up About His Historic Emmy Win in Morning-After Interview

Sterling K. Brown Opens Up About His Historic Emmy Win in Morning-After Interview
Sterling K. Brown can’t stop smiling.

It’s the morning after his momentous win at the Emmy Awards, and Brown is still grinning from ear to ear. Even on just a few hours sleep, it would be hard to extinguish that famous blinding white beam, what with back-to-back trophies to his name. After winning last year for his work as Christopher Darden in “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” on Sunday night he took home the prize for best actor in a drama for “This Is Us,” as the anxiety-ridden but oh-so-lovable Randall Pearson on the NBC-20th Century Fox production.

It’s been nearly two decades since a black actor claimed the prize — a profound fact that was not lost on Brown. Andre Braugher, who starred in NBC’s “Homicide,” was one of the first people he thanked in his acceptance speech. “It is my supreme honor to follow in your footsteps,” he

Collateral Beauty – Review

(L-r) Will Smith as Howard and Helen Mirren as Brigitte in the New Line Cinemas, Village Roadshow Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures drama “Collateral Beauty,” a Warner Bros Pictures release. Photo by Barry Wetcher.

Will Smith heads a star-filled cast, as a father still struggling with overwhelming grief two years after the death of his six-year-old daughter, a man who is visited by three people claiming to be Death, Time and Love, in Collateral Beauty.

Actually, the three people are out-of-work actors hired to play the roles of Death, Time and Love by the CEO of the ad agency he co-founded. This twist allows Collateral Beauty to skirt the “angels” pitfall of a too-precious Hallmark movie. The film walks this fine line throughout, or at least until the last two scenes, when it falls off its tight rope – two scenes which, ironically, are not necessary to the story. It seems

My Last-minute Oscar Predictions

It’s been such a good year at the movies that I’m a little bit surprised by the degree to which I’m approaching tomorrow night’s Academy Awards ceremony with something resembling… disinterest. And again, it’s not necessarily the movies. It’s hard to remember a year when there wasn’t at least one obvious howler among the five, or now five-to-10 nominees—just by turning to random pages in Robert Osborne’s 70 Years of Oscar—The Official History of the Academy Awards I am reminded that The Turning Point, Midnight Express, Fatal Attraction and Mississippi Burning were all lauded by the Academy with Best Picture nominations. This year all eight movies nominated are, in my eyes, worthy of some measure of honor, including Room, my choice for the movie of the year. Yet I can’t remember the last time—could it have been 1991?—when I

Netflix Renews 'Daredevil' for Season 2

Everyone is talking about "Daredevil," Marvel's new Netflix series that's become a cultural touchstone since its release earlier this month. So it should come as no surprise, then, that the streaming service has picked up the show for another season.

Netflix and Marvel announced the renewal earlier this week, noting that season two should debut sometime in 2016. The series will also get new showrunners for its second go-around, with Doug Petrie ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "American Horror Story") and Marco Ramirez ("Sons of Anarchy") subbing in for Steven S. DeKnight and Drew Goddard.

Goddard will stay on as an executive producer for season two, alongside Jeph Loeb ("Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.").

"Daredevil" stars Charlie Cox, Rosario Dawson, Vincent D'Onofrio, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Scott Glenn, Bob Gunton, Toby Leonard Moore, Vondie Curtis Hall, and Ayelet Zurer. It's the first of four planned Marvel-centric series coming to Netflix, with "A.K.A. Jessica Jones

Netflix's 'Daredevil' Adds Audio Descriptions for the Visually Impaired

Netflix, in an effort to be more inclusive of visually impaired television fans, has introduced a feature to add audio descriptions to its original programming, beginning with new Marvel series "Daredevil."

In a blog post, Tracy Wright, the director of content operations at Netflix, explained that the streaming service wanted to increase its accessibility for all viewers, and that now includes the visually impaired. Netflix's decision to begin this process with "Daredevil" is especially significant, since the show's protagonist, Matt Murdock, is blind, and the comics starring the superhero are especially popular in the visually impaired community.

"Audio description is a narration track that describes what is happening on-screen, including physical actions, facial expressions, costumes, settings and scene changes," Wright explained in her blog post. "Customers can choose audio narration just like choosing the soundtrack in a different language."

Entertainment Weekly tried out the feature, and it's quite detailed, with

Here's Vincent D'Onofrio as 'Daredevil' Villain Kingpin (Photo)

We finally have our first look at Vincent D'Onofrio as "Daredevil" villain Kingpin on the upcoming Netflix series, and the actor appears every bit as menacing as you'd hoped.

The image features D'Onofrio's bald baddie in a slick black suit and matching monochrome shirt, looking all-business as he's no doubt about to crack some skulls (check out the full photo at the end of this post). Kingpin in the alter ego of Wilson Fisk, who spars with Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox) over what's best for the citys. The complete character description:

The shadowy figure behind organized crime in Hell's Kitchen, Wilson Fisk has one mission in mind: to save Hell's Kitchen by any means necessary, no matter the cost. This immediately puts him at odds with Matt Murdock's (Charlie Cox) vigilante alter-ego, who also seeks to protect the city - but sees the criminal element as the root of the city's problems.

The Mysteries Of Laura Review – NBC TV

The Mysteries of Laura Review

The aftermath of a long-running show isn’t an impossible hurdle to overcome, but it’s a tricky one, and Debra Messing is about due for another success.

Unfortunately, the best case scenario for The Mysteries of Laura involves a large enough demographic that is looking for a mix of soap opera and crime drama that leans heavily into the guilty pleasure realm. That might not actually give a fair account of the show, especially because a certain number of series that are on the air now, and doing quite well, could be thought to fall into that realm themselves. The Mysteries of Laura demands we go further than we’re used to, even in thinking of a television show as being a certain kind of ridiculous, and in this case what we’re looking for is akin to Scooby Doo showing up in a modern-setting romance novel.

Movie Review: The Other Woman

First, let’s get something straight. If you choose to see a movie called The Other Woman, you should go into it understanding what it’s about – yes, the dreaded “other woman.” Ladies and gentlemen, you’re going to see a film that flaunts the raw force of a group of women suckered by the same damn guy. You’ll be celebrating the spirit of sisterhood. But you shouldn’t expect a sincerely feminist cinematic masterpiece. This isn’t that movie. Rather, the unpretentious hilarity Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann ooze throughout the film showcase an undeniable charisma that will leave you entertained.

In this case, the (first) other woman is Carly Whitten (played by Cameron Diaz). Your stereotypical bad girl with a heart of steel, Carly is a wildly successful lawyer strutting around in sleek black suits and slicked black hair. But the wife, Kate King (Leslie Mann), is the one we gravitate toward.
