There’s a moment in “Road House,” at a low point for Jake Gyllenhaal’s haunted ex-UFC fighter turned bouncer Dalton, where he’s been slapped around by crazed mob enforcer (Conor McGregor) and is ready to give up and leave. McGregor watches him go with a bloodthirsty grin (plus a lot of actual blood) on his face and says, “There’s something wrong with you. Me too.”
It’s a threat, a nod of respect, and a bit of a thesis for how the film’s action works. There’s something wrong (in the best way) with everyone in “Road House,” from the stars to the stunt team to director Doug Limon and cinematographer Henry Braham, who designed his own handheld gimbal that looks like a robotic arm and responds like a Steadicam’s stabilizers but is able to be thrown around a speedboat (presumably along with the...

Road House stunt coordinator Garrett Warren came up with a clever means of making the remake’s fights look realistic without breaking any bones.
Whether or not you think it’s sacrilege to remake the 1989 cult favourite, Road House, it’s arguable that director Doug Liman directed his fight scenes with gleeful rawness – faces are pummelled, bodies are sent crashing through tables, and backsides are well and truly kicked.
It’s possible that Liman’s full-frontal method of shooting his hand-to-hand combat scenes may have left you wondering: how do you make it look as though UFC star Conor McGregor’s just punched Jake Gyllenhaal square in the face without landing the Hollywood star in hospital?
Shared on Twitter over the weekend, a brief clip shows off an intriguing method that stunt coordinator Garrett Warren came up with for the production – what he calls the ‘four-pass’ or ‘Abcd method’.

Fight scenes in Road House needed expert choreography to avoid injuries, especially with real fighters like Conor McGregor involved. Jake Gyllenhaal had to constantly remind McGregor to pull his punches to prevent any real injuries during filming. Despite accidentally getting punched for real by McGregor, Gyllenhaal and McGregor were able to laugh it off and continue filming.
Fight scenes in movies are choreographed with expert precision to make sure no one gets hurt, but when you throw in a professionally trained Mma fighter with a history of brutality, anything can happen. Just ask Jake Gyllenhaal, who stars alongside Conor McGregor in Doug Liman's updated version of Road House, which hit Prime Video on March 21, 2024. Gyllenhaal takes over the role made famous by Patrick Swayze, and if that wasn't enough of a challenge, he had to constantly remind his co-star to pull his punches so no one would be injured.

At the New York City premiere of Doug Liman’s remake of Road House on Tuesday, Conor McGregor shared with The Hollywood Reporter how Meryl Streep’s negative comments about mixed martial arts made him want to prove himself even more while starring in the film.
While accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2017 Golden Globes, Streep said, “Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. And if we kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.” Her remark was met with roaring applause, but her comments hurt athletes in the UFC, including McGregor.
“Fighting is the most beautiful form of art, and you know, it’s a great thing to come into this game, which is also art,” he said. “I was really taken aback because fighting is an art. It’s brutal also, so I can understand.

Amazon Prime Video is releasing a remake of the '80s classic "Road House" this year, one that will star Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role (stepping in for the late Patrick Swayze). Director Doug Liman's new take on the film will be changing things up in several ways. For one, Gyllenhaal's version of Dalton will be an ex-UFC fighter. Whether or not he does any throat-ripping remains to be seen. But it sounds like the filmmakers really upped the ante in the action department as well. How so? By implementing, er, very fancy, high-tech pillow fights.
Speaking in the latest issue of Total Film magazine, stunt coordinator Garrett Warren, whose credits range from "Charlie's Angels" to "Logan," revealed that he employed a technique he first used on James Cameron's "Avatar." Much of Avatar: The Way of Water was CGI, but a new behind-the-scenes video shows that a practical (and terrifyingly claustrophobic) flooding submarine rig was used for certain scenes. Serving as a sequel to his 2009 original hit, James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water sees the Sully family take refuge with a new ocean-dwelling clan of Na'vi called the Metkayina. While their new home affords them brief safety from the returning human invaders, it isn't long until Quaritch (Stephen Lang) and the Rda find the Sullys and unleash an arsenal of new equipment to take them out.
Second Unit Director Garrett Warren has released a new behind-the-scenes video from Avatar: The Way of Water, showing how one particularly intense submarine sequence from the film was pulled off.

A new Avatar: The Way of Water featurette shows how practical performance capture stunts were used to bring the film's epic underwater CGI action scenes to life. 13 years after the release of the original film, director James Cameron returns to the world of Pandora with Avatar: The Way of Water, a sequel that continues the story of Jake (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and their new family. The film sees the Sully family on the run from their forest home after the return of human forces to Pandora. Avatar: The Way of Water has earned strong reviews from audiences and critics alike, with particular praise levied at the film's jaw-dropping visual effects and action.

“Avatar: The Way of Water” is maybe the most special-effects heavy film of the entire year, transforming the majority of the cast into the alien Na’vi and their real-world surroundings into the lush planet of Pandora. But in making the film, James Cameron had an edict for the stunt team responsible for coordinating the action scenes to make them feel as real and grounded as possible.
“[James] of course doesn’t like things to just be animated, you’re gonna do them for real,” stunt coordinator Garrett Warren says. “The only thing that’s not real is us being blue,” assistant stunt coordinator Steve Brown adds. “If we need real fire, there’s gonna be real fire on that stage. If we need those physical things in our hands to make it real, it will be there.”
IndieWire is exclusively debuting this stunt featurette for “Avatar: The Way of Water.

The cybernetic warrior Alita practices a unique martial art in Alita: Battle Angel. James Cameron's pet project for decades, Alita: Battle Angel arrived in theaters in 2019 with Cameron passing Alita directing duties to Robert Rodriguez while he served as producer and co-writer. Based on Yukito Kishiro's Battle Angel: Alita manga, Alita: Battle Angel became one of the most well-received manga or anime live-action adaptions to date, with many fans hoping to see Alita's story continue (a sentiment vocally shared by numerous cast and crew members).
As a cyborg, Alita is an extremely formidable martial artist and a practitioner of the martial art known as Panzer Kunst. Alita: Battle Angel's fight scenes showcase the combat skills of Alita to their fullest. Bringing Panzer Kunst to life on the big-screen meant drawing on numerous real-world martial arts styles for Rosa Salazar's portrayal of Alita. Here is the rundown...

The past twenty four hours have been some of the most explosive amid the fan fervor from Simon McQuoid's feature debut, Mortal Kombat. More than thirty years since its birth in the 1990s, the fighting game franchise has managed to replenish its shelf life between game installments and hit-or-miss film and TV treatmemts that eventually led to the stalled development of a reboot that was announced back in 2011 following two webseries seasons from directors Kevin Tancharoen and Garrett Warren. Alas, you can imagine the excitement dating back to 2015 with the hire of James Wan to produce a reboot, followed by McQuoid's hire a year later, and a buzzworthy cast making headlines with none other than Into The Badlands and Wu Assassins actor Lewis...

Filming on the Avatar sequels was one of the first major productions to resume following a forced hiatus, with producer Jon Landau since providing a few glimpses of what's going on behind-the-scenes of the upcoming sci-fi action franchise. Well, Landau is back, this time giving us a look at the latter element of Avatar 2 courtesy of a few pictures which suggest the war between the humans and the Na'vi is far from over.
The images show off a moment on the second unit of the movie which is currently filming some sequences involving human soldiers. Starship Troopers TV Show: Casper Van Dien Wants to Return and Bring Jake Busey with Him [Exclusive]
We haven't heard any updates on the Starship Troopers TV show in some time. Last year, original writer Ed Neumeier revealed that plans were underway for a possible series based on the 1997 sci-fi flick which is, itself, based on the novel of the same name by Robert A. Heinlein. Now, we have some info from Casper Van Dien, who plays Johnny Rico in the franchise. Not only is the actor eager to return for the show but he was involved in the development process.
I recently had the chance to speak with Casper Van Dien about his upcoming movie The 2nd. We will be sharing the full interview soon but during our conversation, I asked him what was going on with the Starship Troopers show. Here's what he had to say about it.
" I was very involved with it. Sony even asked me to talk to a director that I've worked with.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will explore how stunt artists utilize emerging technologies to bring previously impossible stunts to the screen in “Real to Reel: The Art of Action” on Friday, September 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
Using scenes from films including “The Matrix” (1999), “Transformers” (2007), “Alice in Wonderland” (2010), “Real Steel” (2011), “Warrior” (2011), “Skyfall” (2012), “The Master” (2012) and “Iron Man 3″ (2013), “Real to Reel” will illustrate how technology is expanding cinematic possibilities for stunt artists.
Hosted by stunt coordinator Garrett Warren, the night will include live demonstrations, behind-the-scenes footage and conversations with some of the films’ creative teams, who will discuss how scenes were created.
Warren was a martial artist before launching his on-screen career. He has served as stunt coordinator on such features as “Beowulf” (2007), “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” (2009), “Avatar” (2009), “Alice in Wonderland” (2010), “Real Steel” (2011) and “Lincoln” (2012). “The stunt coordinator that worked on The Losers, was the stunt coordinator on Avatar so I’ve known Garrett Warren for three or four years. He trained me so he’s the one that has beaten me up and knows exactly what my body can do at times when I didn’t even know that I can do it myself. An explosive action tale of betrayal and revenge that comes to the big screen from the pages of the popular DC/Vertigo comic book series, “The Losers” centers around the members of an elite Special Forces unit sent to the Bolivian jungle on a search and destroy mission. But the team – Clay (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Jensen (Chris Evans), Roque (Idris Elba), Pooch (Columbus Short) and Cougar (Oscar Jaenada) – soon find that they have become the target of a deadly double cross, instigated from the inside by a powerful enemy known only as Max (Jason Patric).
Making good use of the fact that they are now presumed dead, the group goes deep undercover in a dangerous plot to clear their names and even the score with Max. They are joined by the mysterious Aisha (Zoe Saldana), a beautiful operative with her own agenda, who is more than capable of scoring a few points of her own.

At the start of production for the new film The Losers, Jeffrey Dean Morgan was more or less the clear star of the film, thanks to his high-profile performances on TV’s Grey’s Anatomy and in Zack Snyder’s Watchmen adaptation. In the last 12 months, however, Zoe Saldana has become a rising star in her own right, appearing not only in J.J. Abrams’ acclaimed reboot of Star Trek, but also playing Neytiri, the soulful heart of the story in James Cameron’s box office-busting Avatar. Appropriately, each of them exudes charisma and charm; but speaking together, Saldana and Morgan offer humble observations and defer to one another when discussing their on-screen collaboration.
Hollywood News spoke to Morgan and Saldana on Sunday at a press conference during the Los Angeles junket for The Losers. In addition to talking about tussling with one another both as actors and physical adversaries (on screen,...

It seems like every spring Hollywood produces at least one breakthrough movie – the sort of film that razes notions of stardom or style and gives audiences something they want in a way they don’t expect. The Losers appears to be 2010’s requisite entry: directed by Sylvain White, best known for helming Stomp The Yard, the film features an ensemble of up-and-comers in roles that give them equal opportunities to advertise their action and comedy chops.
Following a presentation of footage and a public Q&A Saturday at San Franscisco’s Wondercon, the cast and crew spoke directly to reporters about the process of bringing the cult comic book to life. Sylvain White, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Chris Evans and Columbus Short offered their opinions and insights about the film, and additionally provided a few details about some of their individual projects, including Evans’ recently-announced stint as Captain America.

Director Sylvain White’s highly anticipated adaptation of Andy Diggle and Jock's “The Losers” will hit theaters next April. And while the film has an all-star cast — including Chris Evans, Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba and Columbus Short — the movie may ultimately stand out from the pack thanks to its reliance on practical special effects over CGI, according to veteran stunt coordinator Garrett Warren (“Avatar”).
“[White] wanted it to be not only like the comic book but somewhat more visceral,” relayed Warren during an interview with the Los Angeles Times. “It’s an amazingly real yet superbly comical look at these black ops special agents. And I loved the dichotomy. He was thinking the ‘Bourne’ films and ‘24,’ and yet he wanted to have comedy involved.”
“It’s all live action, 100%,” continued Warren. “There is some amazing action in that movie. You will be blown away. People will think, ‘Wow, that had to be CG.

Stunt Coordinator Garrett Warren has worked on an impressive resume of high-profile movies, such as Avatar and Iron Man 2, but he told the La Times that it's the comic book adaptation of The Losers that has a "special place" in his heart, especially after helping actress Zoe Saldana land the role of Aisha, the loose cannon amongst a group of CIA black ops agents.
Zoe Saldana was the one who got me on that movie. We were shooting Avatar, at the time and she came to me saying there was a movie she wanted to be in called The Losers. The people weren't sure whether or not she could handle action. She felt so heartbroken because they weren't able to see the stuff she was doing on Avatar. It was all top secret. While "Iron Man 2" has been in its post-production phase for quite some time, it has been hit with another rumor, speculating that Marvel Studios is tinkering with the conversion of the action movie to Digital 3-D. Coming up with the story was Ain't It Cool News (AICN) which reported that a minute of the "Iron Man" sequel is being converted to 3-D as a demo.
"Right now, there is a 1 minute demo of Iron Man 2 converted to high quality digital 3D. I'm told this one minute is totally like Kim Basinger & Mickey Rourke in 9 1/2 Weeks," so Harry of AICN claimed. The site further pointed out that while the 3-D demo is prepared, Marvel, Paramount and Disney "are fishing for bids with 3 different companies to see what the cost and time it would take to convert Iron Man 2 to a complete 3D film."

Movieline chatted with stunt choreographer of the year, Garrett Warren, who revealed some information about Steven Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn" and the upcoming "Iron Man" sequel. Regarding "Tintin": "It looks an awful lot like the cartoon. They really wanted to bring the cartoon to life. So if you know the cartoon, or have seen the books, that's what it looks like. It's beautiful. You would have thought to yourself that they would have tried to go for a more realistic look, but they're actually trying to preserve the look and essence of the original 'Tintin' characters." Regarding "Iron Man 2": "Iron Man 2 had a double-whip sequence, and I am a whip specialist. There's not very many of us in Hollywood that do double-whips. In the movie, you won't see those whips. They'll digitally replace it with other types of whips.

We recently got a look at what (we think) Mickey Rourke’s finished Whiplash armor (above) will look like in Iron Man 2; now we have Rourke’s own stunt double describing what Whiplash’s weaponry - his energy whips - are like and how much havoc they actually wreak in the film.
Garrett Warren was recently crowned the 2009 Stunt Choreographer of the Year at the Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards, and he sat down for an exclusive interview with Movieline to describe what it’s like working on films like Tintin, Alice In Wonderland, James Cameron’s Avatar, and yes, getting crazy with those whips on the set of Iron Man 2.

Typically, the stuntman's role is to make the big action scenes look dangerously bad-ass, not to talk about the film itself. But "Iron Man 2" and "The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn" stunt choreographer Garrett Warren isn't your typical stuntman—he's got a whole lot to say, and comic book fans might want to listen up.
Warren spoke with Movieline about his work on both upcoming comic book films, which involved stuntwork on behalf of Mickey Rourke's villainous Whiplash in "Iron Man 2."
While many of his comments were innocent, some of them did reveal some interesting information about the whip-clad baddie.
"I had brought two whips with me that are made of kangaroo hide that are incredibly well made," Warren described of Whiplash's whips. "You can perform all sorts of tricks and cracks with them. In the movie, you won't see those whips. They'll digitally replace it with other types of whips.

Garrett Warren is a busy stunt choreographer these days. He has most recently worked on Iron Man 2, Tintin, Alice in Wonderland, Avatar, and Mars Needs Moms.
Speaking to Movieline, Warren spilled a little spoilage about doing stunts for Mickey Rourke's character Whiplash.
I don't know if I'm at liberty to say what the [Iron Man 2] whips will look like, but they're going to be these super whips that have an awful lot of power. They can cut through cars, they can do an awful lot of damage. And when the movie comes out, you'll see that he doesn't do just whip-cracks and grabbing people. He lays waste to an awful lot of vehicles and street pieces and other things. Movieline has published a very interesting interview with Stunt Choreographer of the Year, Garrett Warren, who recently finished work on Marvel Studios' Iron Man 2. In the interview, Warren spills some beans about his work with Mickey Rourke, the man behind the film's villain, Whiplash. As you may know, Whiplash is an escaped Russian convict who uses a special power-suit that has whips attached to the end of his arms. He uses the electrically charged whips to attack his opponents. According to Warren, these whips aren't just there to smack people around: I had brought two whips with me that are made of kangaroo hide that are incredibly well made. You can perform all sorts of tricks and cracks with them. In the movie, you won’t see those whips. They’ll digitally replace it with other types of whips. Hollywood.s studio system keeps a pretty tight rein on what any actor involved in a major project says to the press. That.s why most of the interviews you.ll read with major stars are, to put it bluntly, downright boring. It.s the lesser knowns who often have the most interesting things to say, whether because they just don.t know any better or because they have less lose. Either way, somewhere a studio suit cringes every time someone interviews stuntman number two or the third extra from the left in a major, upcoming picture. For instance Movieline interviewed stuntman Garrett Warren. He.s Mickey Rourke.s stunt double on Iron Man, he did stunt work in Avatar, and he has a job on Tin Tin. What he probably didn.t know when he started talking to Movieline was that their only reason for interviewing him was to...

It seems that I'm doubting the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences rather a lot today (after questioning Mike Leigh's sole credit on screenplays) but I do have a real issue with their lack of recognition for stunt teams. If somebody dies making a film, chances are it was one of the stunt team or, perhaps more to the point, if there's anticipated risk of death on a film set, we're definitely talking about the stunt team. Does this alone not warrant a little gold man or two every year? The Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards do gong-up for the stuntees, though, and the winner of their 2009 award is the incredible Garrett Warren. This 'Stunt Choreographer of the Year' has most recently worked on Iron Man 2, Tintin, Alice in Wonderland, Avatar and Mars Needs Moms and is therefore a wonderful treasure trove of mid-scale scoopage. We continue our series of interviews with the winners of the 2009 Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards with Stunt Choreographer of the Year, Garrett Warren. A virtually indestructible one-stuntman-army (he's taken four real bullets and lived to tell the tale), Warren is the go-to guy for stunt coordination on 3-D motion capture movies like Avatar, Alice in Wonderland, A Christmas Carol, and The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. He's no stranger to non-cgi danger, either, having just dodged actual explosions and flying Grand Prix cars while serving as Mickey Rourke's Iron Man 2 stunt double. Read on to find out who insists on doing their own stunts, who prefers not to, and pick up a couple of Tintin and Iron Man 2 scoops while you're at it.

Joe Pesci's ex wife Claudia 'Marty' Haro has been arrested for attempted murder after a hitman failed to kill her stuntman husband. Haro is suspected of ordering the hit, which Garrett Warren miraculously survived, despite being shot four times outside his California home in May 2000. She was arrested on 13 July by police who released her two days later. She didn't have to post bail because of an "insufficient complaint". Authorities are now searching for more evidence against Haro - who was known to have been involved in a custody dispute with Warren over their daughter Kyla. While Haro was in jail, Warren obtained temporary custody of Kyla. A sheriff's department spokesperson says, "The charges have not been dropped against Ms. Haro but more information is needed to proceed in this case. Ms. Haro could be re-arrested at any time." Despite divorcing Haro in 1992, Pesci - who has a child with Haro - is reportedly devastated by the claims. A source tells the National Enquirer, "Joe is devastated. He knows Marty is not capable of hurting anyone and certainly wouldn't know how to arrange a hit. Joe says he'll do whatever he has to do to help her out of this mess, even testify in court."...
