Britannia episode 1 review

Louisa Mellor Jan 18, 2018

New Sky Atlantic drama Britannia has a big imagination, fun characters, and yes, feels a little bit familiar...

Along with ‘interesting’ (which, as Viggo Mortensen’s character says in Captain Fantastic, is a non-word that, ideally, should be avoided), one of the least useful ways to describe a creative work is ‘like nk] on drugs’.

It’s a question of accuracy. ‘Game Of Thrones on drugs’ as some have labelled Britannia, wouldn’t really be a dreamier, more blurred-around-the-edges version of the HBO show in which characters visit the underworld and converse with badgers. In reality, Game Of Thrones on drugs would be a solid hour of the Night’s Watch eating Jammy Dodgers and laughing at their boots, or Daenerys Targaryen flying her dragons non-stop up the

Britannia: a mad trip through British history and myth

Louisa Mellor Jan 18, 2018

Starting tonight on Sky Atlantic, ancient history drama Britannia is a surprising, funny trip you’ll want to take…

It’s the press launch for Britannia, and playwright and screenwriter Jez Butterworth has the audience in stitches. He’s describing the difference between writing for the stage, film and TV. “I’ve done lots of theatre where people pay attention to what you’ve got to say, but in film,” he says, “it’s a bit like being a sperm donor. In that they need you, they absolutely need you, but once you’ve done your thing… they really don’t want you to show up at any of the rest of it at all. As you leave, they give you a look like ‘and who does that, for money?’”

Giant squid and sexed-up druids: is Britannia Jez Butterworth's mad masterpiece?

The playwright’s venture into big-budget television is a heady combination of horrible history and dollops of British ‘folk horror’. But did any of it actually exist?

It is 43 Ad. Britain. A young girl is on the verge of an initiation ceremony that will nudge her into adulthood via chanting, dancing and something nasty with a knife. Zoë Wanamaker as Antedia, warrior queen of a British clan, is magnificent in electric-blue eyeshadow and bird’s nest hair. A mysterious outcast from the druids is receiving signs – from the badgers and the frogs, among other authorities – that something in Albion is badly amiss. Mackenzie Crook, who has clearly spent hours in makeup, is listing and swaying menacingly, face caked with clay-coloured grime, high as a kite on some nameless drug. Crook, a cadaverous vision, is the druidic leader, Veran.

Meantime, just over the Channel on the northern shore of Gaul, a

Miranda Richardson to Star in New Series from Kay Mellor

Miranda Richardson in “Rubicon

Oscar-nominated actress Miranda Richardson will topline “Girlfriends,” a new drama from Kay Mellor (“In the Club”). Per Deadline, Phyllis Logan (aka Mrs. Hughes of “Downton Abbey”) and Zoë Wanamaker (“Mr. Selfridge”) will also star in the series about “being a modern woman of a certain age.”

“After the dramatic and sudden death of her husband Micky, Linda (Logan) reunites with childhood friends Sue (Richardson) and Gail (Wanamaker),” “Girlfriends’” description reads. “Each is facing their own issues, from a looming divorce to the loss of a high-powered job through age discrimination and juggling the responsibilities of their grandchildren and aging mothers. But as questions over the circumstances of Micky’s death start to be asked, accusations reveal secrets, deception, and doubts.”

Girlfriends” is a project Mellor has wanted to bring to the screen for some time. “I’m aware that there are a lot of women of a certain age who feel like they are invisible and unheard,” the series’ writer-director explained. “So I’m proud to have the chance to shine a light on their lives and give them a voice. The series is not just a platform for their voices though — there is a big, bold, dark story at its heart, which is shot through with humor. I’m hoping both men and women will love it as much as I’ve loved writing it.”

Scheduled to begin filming in June, “Girlfriends” will air on ITV next year in six parts. Mellor is executive producing alongside ITV’s Head of TV Drama, Polly Hill. Rollem Productions is set to produce. Acorn Media Enterprises is ITV’s North American partner.

Richardson has received seven BAFTA nominations throughout her career. She took home the prize for her work in “Damage,” a film that also earned her an Academy Award nomination. The “Testament of Youth” actress received a second Oscar nod for “Tom & Viv.”

You can catch Richardson next as Clementine Churchill, the long-suffering wife of Winston, in “Churchill.” The drama opens June 2.

Miranda Richardson to Star in New Series from Kay Mellor was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.
