‘Gemini Man’ Review

Stars: Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Benedict Wong, Clive Owen, Douglas Hodge, Ralph Brown, Linda Emond, Ilia Volok, E.J. Bonilla, Victor Hugo, David Shae | Written by David Benioff, Billy Ray, Darren Lemke | Directed by Ang Lee

Apparently a script that has been floating around Hollywood since 1997 and only now, I’m guessing with the availability of CGI technology, coming to the screen, Gemini Man tells the story of top-notch assassin Henry Brogan. One of the worlds, if not The, premier assassin. Only Henry wants to retire and we all know that government agencies can;’t just let great assets like Henry retire. Ever. Well they can if their dead… And that what Clive Owen’s Clay Verris wants to do. Kill Henry. Only to kill an assassin as good as Brogan you need an equally good assassin. And what better than a clone?

From the get-go you can’t help

Blu-ray Review – Kolobos (1999)

Kolobos, 1999.

Directed by Daniel Liatowitsch & David Todd Ocvirk.

Starring Amy Weber, Donny Terranova, Nichole Pelerine, Promise Lamarco, Ilia Volok and Linnea Quigley.

Synopsis:

Five people agree to take part in an experiment where they stay in a house filled with cameras… and a killer.

Lurking somewhere in a post-Scream, pre-Saw horror movie void, Kolobos is a low-budget indie film that has a lot of obvious influences – most of them Italian (try listening to the main theme and not thinking of Suspiria) – and the benefit of hindsight that twenty years of reality television brings, which is helpful when contextualising what happens during this film.

The main thrust of the plot is that five seemingly ordinary people are selected to stay in a house that has been fitted with video cameras to monitor their movements and how they interact with people. In these enlightened times that may not seem that revolutionary but

March 12th Blu-ray & DVD Releases Include The Craft Collector’s Edition, Kolobos Special Edition, Man’S Best Friend, Piercing

With March in full swing, we have another big batch of horror headed home this week that genre fans should keep an eye out for, including one of my most anticipated releases of the month: Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition of The Craft (so excited to call the corners with this new Blu-ray!). Beyond that, we have even more great titles to get excited about, including the criminally underseen Kolobos from Arrow Video, Man’s Best Friend, featuring one of my favorites—Ally Sheedy—and Nicolas Pesce’s Piercing, which features some brilliant performances from the likes of Mia Wasikowska and Christopher Abbott.

Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for March 12th include Garden Party Massacre, She Wolf, The Greasy Strangler: Special Director’s Edition, Lifechanger, Silk Scream, and The Wild Pussycat.

Movie Review – Hunter Killer (2018)

Hunter Killer, 2018.

Directed by Donovan Marsh.

Starring Gary Oldman, Gerard Butler, Common, Ryan McPartlin, Linda Cardellini. Michael Nyqvist, Michael Trucco, Caroline Goodall, Zane Holtz, Toby Stephens, David Gyasi, Gabriel Chavarria, Carter MacIntyre, Taylor John Smith, Henry Goodman, Colin Stinton, Shane Taylor, Will Attenborough, Christopher Goh, Sarah Middleton, Mikhail Gorevoy, Adam James, Corey Johnson, Alexander Diachenko, and Ilia Volok.

Synopsis:

An untested American submarine captain teams with U.S. Navy Seals to rescue the Russian president, who has been kidnapped by a rogue general.

If Hunter Killer had stayed underwater for the duration of its running time, there might have been something worthwhile to come out of it. Unlike most Gerard Butler action vehicles, this one has more of an espionage thriller feel to it, and a dialed back performance from the macho leading man of such “America fuck yeah” movies; it still clearly functions as military propaganda that is disinterested
