As a series of heists escalate across the L.A. landscape, we get to see both sides of the law; riding with Nick O’Brien (Gerard Butler) and his group of Semper Fi elite unit cops, and Ray Merrimen (Pablo Schreiber) with his tight-knit crew of career criminals. Den of Thieves chronicles their respective preparations during the build up to an ambitious take down of the Federal Reserve Bank.

The only director capable of remaking Heat was Michael Mann, whose crime-epic was a redo of his own 1989 TV movie L.A. Takedown. With Den of Thieves it appears that the

A gritty crime saga which follows the lives of an elite unit of the La County Sheriff’s Dept. and the state’s most successful bank robbery crew as the outlaws plan a seemingly impossible heist on the Federal Reserve Bank.

If there’s one thing Den of Thieves is good for, it’s reassuring audiences that writer/director Christian Gudegast has *definitely* seen Michael Mann’s Heat. No question. Gudegast undoubtedly flipped Heat on one night while writing this rugged thug cons versus thug cops standoff, which lead to connective ties in multiple scene by scene comparisons. Inspiration,

Believe it or not, I’m always up for a cheesy action romp headlined by Gerard Butler, as he knows his wheelhouse and the extent of his capabilities as an actor. It has gotten to a point where he elevates mostly terrible concepts into dumb fun. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Den of Thieves (the directorial debut from Christian Gudecast,

Will 12 Strong Dethrone Jumanji at the Box Office This Weekend?

Will 12 Strong Dethrone Jumanji at the Box Office This Weekend?
After opening behind Star Wars: The Last Jedi in its first two weekends at the box office, Sony's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has come on strong by winning its next two frames in a row. This blockbuster adventure faces its biggest test yet this weekend, going up against three newcomers, Warner Bros.' 12 Strong, set in the direct aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Stx Entertainment's Den of Thieves, starring Gerard Butler and 50 Cent, and Roadside Attractions' Forever My Girl, starring Alex Roe and Jessica Rothe. While it certainly may be a close call at the box office this weekend, we're predicting that 12 Strong will barely be able to take down Jumanji with $16.2 million, with Jumanji close behind earning $15.8 million.

Sony's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle}, another big hit from The Rock (a.k.a. Dwayne Johnson), has been posting minimal decreases over the past two weekends,

The Remarkable Hot Streak of Filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra

There are often two stories being told in the movies of Barcelona-born filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra, the story in the script and the story of their own making. In his remake of Andre de Toth’s House of Wax, the conceit of a case involving wax statues made with corpses remains central but instead of Vincent Price’s scarred artist getting his revenge on a greedy backer, there are twin brothers, Vincent and Bo (Brian Van Holt). Even more important, Collet-Serra uses replication as a central theme, as the brothers not only recreated the town of their youth …

This looks as bad as it did in the first trailer, and I'm already ready to forget about it and move on. Another bland January action movie release that will be forgotten quickly. Gerard Butler & 50 Cent in First Trailer for Crime Film 'Den of Thieves'

"You're not the bad guys... we are." Another new Heat wannabe movie. Stx Entertainment has dropped the first trailer for an action crime thriller titled Den of Thieves, from writer/director Christian Gudegast. The movie is about a thief who gets trapped between two sides of a heist and two sets of "criminals" - an elite unit of the La County Sheriff's Dept. and the state's most successful bank robbery crew. Gerard Butler stars, with 50 Cent, Pablo Schreiber, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Sonya Balmores, Maurice Compte, Evan Jones, Brian Van Holt, Jordan Bridges, and Eric Braeden. This seems like it's going to have quite a few big twists, and characters who don't turn out to be who they seem to be (obviously enough). With Gerard Butler, 50 Cent, and a January release date, this is pretty much a disaster in the making. Have fun. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Christian Gudegast's Den of Thieves,

Performer of the Week: Reese Witherspoon

Performer of the Week: Reese Witherspoon
The Performer | Reese Witherspoon

The Show | Big Little Lies

The Episode | “Serious Mothering” (Feb. 26, 2017)

The Performance | Oh, how we’ve missed this Reese Witherspoon. The living and breathing firecracker from the Election/Legally Blonde era who would toggle from bitchy to emboldened to entitled to vulnerable in the span of seconds. The one who could deliver a well-crafted one-liner with Bette Davis-like precision before melting your heart with a simple glance.

Luckily, with HBO’s Big Little Lies, the Oscar winner has triumphantly returned to her darkly comedic wheelhouse, and that was especially so with Sunday’s second episode.

Director John McTiernan at La Cinémathèque Française's masterclass.Last autumn, my friend and colleague, Christopher Small, and I took the vacation of a lifetime to Paris. Did we go to eat macarons, drink wine and sneak a peek at the Mona Lisa? No, no we didn’t. We went to Paris to watch movies. Movies? Yes, movies. Did we go to Paris to watch the latest Godard, visit the site of the first cinema screening or drink beer with friendly Parisians until 4 in the morning? No, but we did anyway. What Christopher and I went to Paris to do was to watch John McTiernan’s movies on glorious 35mm at the Cinémathèque Française. To understand how special this trip was, I should probably provide a bit of background information: my husband, Jake Barningham, and his best friend, Daniel Gorman, started Mission:McTiernan back in 2010. Community season 6 episode 5 review: Laws Of Robotics & Party Rights

Community's sixth season continues to deliver surrealism and absurdity in equal measure, as this robot-themed episode shows...

This review contains spoilers.

6.5 Laws Of Robotics & Party Rights

“What the hell kind of school is this?”

This line, one of the last from this week's episode, is delivered by a prison warden officiating over a wedding-like ceremony to make an iPad on a stick into a Professor Emeritus at Greendale. It just about sums this one up too. For all of its more grounded tendencies this season, few sitcoms have more “Wtf am I watching?” moments than Community.

This week's weirdness kicks off when the Colorado State Department of Corrections makes an offer that Greendale can't refuse- $300,000 to participate in a rehabilitation programme for dangerous prisoners, allowing them to attend community college via telepresence robots. However, Law professor Jeff soon butts heads with Willy, played by Cougar Town's Brian Van Holt,

Review: 'Community' - 'Laws of Robotics and Party Rights': Death tab for cutie
A review of this week's "Community" (available, as usual, on Yahoo Screen) coming up just as soon as I watch magicians bully jugglers... Though Jeff the student became Jeff the teacher last season, the show hasn't really done much with the idea, and I was glad to see so much of "Laws of Robotics and Party Rights" devoted to Jeff's class and his usual need to be the coolest guy in any room. Making his opponent be a convicted killer taking the class remotely via a telepresence robot(*) added an extra layer of absurdity to this type of story, but also an extra level of menace. The show made great use of the weird movements and sounds of the robot as it craned its neck up and down in hostile fashion, turning the whole story into a fun, strange mash-up of "Cape Fear" and "2001" (or insert your favorite prisoner revenge
