Lee Unkrich attended Chagrin Falls High School in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. He was born in 1967 and graduated in 1985. He was a great French student and created a character in his movie, Toy Story 2 (1999) after his high school French teacher. He was featured in the local paper twice for Monsters, Inc. (2001) and for Finding Nemo (2003).

His favorite films are Raising Arizona (1987), Punch-Drunk Love (2002), Blue Velvet (1986), An Angel at My Table (1990), and (his favorite) The Shining (1980). The Shining was the movie that inspired him to become a filmmaker. Unkrich also owns a website that features ephemera from The Shining.
Lee Unkrich has three children: Max, age 5, Alice, age 10, and Hannah Unkrich, age 13. He lives with them and his wife Laura in Kentfield, Marin County, California.
