Bill Travers was born on January 3, 1922 in Sunderland, England as William Inglis Lindon Travers. He was an actor and producer, known for Ring of Bright Water (1969), Gorgo (1961) and Born Free (1966). He was married to Virginia McKenna and Patt Rains. He died on March 29, 1994 in Dorking, Surrey, England.

Younger brother of actress Linden Travers.
Came to stardom and international fame as the hammer-throwing giant in Wee Geordie (1955) aka 'Wee Geordie'.
He and his wife co-starred in a number of films, most memorably as the conservationists George Adamson and Joy Adamson in Born Free (1966).
Bill helped found The Born Free Foundation in 1984 with his wife Virginia McKenna.
Uncle of actor Richard Morant, actress Penelope Wilton and Susan Travers.
He has three sons and one daughter with wife Virginia. They have six grandchildren together.

The son of a stage manager, Bill joined the Gurkha Regiment in the British Army, during World War II, fighting guerilla actions behind enemy lines in India and Burma. He left the army with the rank of major in 1947.
His part in 'Born Free' lessened his interest in movie acting and led to his increasing involvement in wildlife conservation.
He and his wife, Virginia McKenna, made 7 films together: The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1957), Big Time Operators aka The Smallest Show on Earth (1957), Storm Over Jamaica aka Passionate Summer (1958), Two living, One Dead (1961), Born Free (1966), Ring of Bright Water (1969) and An Elephant Called Slowly (1970) and played husband and wife in 4 out of 7: The 2nd one and the last three.
