Mary Ellen Trainor was born in Chicago, Illinois. She appeared in many feature-films of the 1980s, notable characters include, Elaine, the kidnapped sister of Kathleen Turner and the catalyst for the entire plot in Romancing the Stone (1984), Dr. Stephanie Woods (LA Police Psychiatrist) in in all four Lethal Weapon (1987) films, Mrs. Walsh Mikey and Brand's (Sean Astinand Josh Brolin) mom in The Goonies (1985), news reporter Gail Wallens in Die Hard (1988) and Ricochet (1991).

She had a son, Alexander Zemeckis, with her ex-husband, Robert.
She died from complications of pancreatic cancer at her home in Montecito, CA.
She appeared in four films directed by her then husband Robert Zemeckis: Romancing the Stone (1984), Back to the Future Part II (1989), Death Becomes Her (1992) and Forrest Gump (1994).
In 1989, she appeared in three film series which were all on their second installment: Lethal Weapon 2 (1989), Ghostbusters II (1989) and Back to the Future Part II (1989).
Although she played Stephen Geoffreys' mother in Amazing Stories: Moving Day (1987), she was only twelve years his senior in real life.
