Cadillac Man

The irrepressible Robin Williams is Joey, a trash-talking Cadillac salesman with three women on the line, who becomes an involuntary hero when Tim Robbins smashes his motorcycle into the car showroom and threatens to kill everybody. Roger Donaldson’s crisis-farce black comedy is still funny — and my favorite Robin Williams feature.

Here's What Julie From Friends Has Been Up to

Here's What Julie From Friends Has Been Up to
This is the one where Julie from Friends is a grandma. Not in real life. But 56-year-old Lauren Tom, who played one of two of Ross' very memorable girlfriends—and one of Rachel's biggest obstacle to anticipated eternal happiness—for seven episodes of the NBC sitcom in the '90s now stars as Celia Mack, grandmother of the main character, teen Andi Mack, on the Disney Channel series Andi Mack. The show debuted earlier this year. Andi, played by 13-year-old actress Peyton Elizabeth Lee, was abandoned as a child by her mother (Lilan Bowden), who gave birth to her as a teen. She was raised by her maternal grandparents, who made her believe they were her parents and that...

‘Andi Mack’ Explores Character’s Heritage for the First Time With Chinese New Year Episode

‘Andi Mack’ Explores Character’s Heritage for the First Time With Chinese New Year Episode
Disney Channel’s “Andi Mack” centers on a multigenerational family that has Chinese roots, but the show never really addressed that heritage with any depth in its first season. That’s going to change with Friday’s episode, “Chinese New Year,” which will go inside the Mack home as they celebrate the Lunar New Year.

Creator, writer, and executive producer Terri Minsky told IndieWire why the show decided to feature the traditional Asian holiday on the show.

“While ‘Andi Mack’ was not originally conceived to be a show about an Asian-American family, when we cast Chinese-American actress Peyton Elizabeth Lee in the title role, we then cast other Asian-American actors to play her family members,” she said. “The stories are meant to be universal about a teenage girl dealing with her life, and at the core of her life is ‘family.’ So, the Chinese New Year celebration at the Mack

‘Andi Mack’ Review: Gay Storyline Goes Straight for the Heart in a Sweet and Emotional Season 2 Premiere

‘Andi Mack’ Review: Gay Storyline Goes Straight for the Heart in a Sweet and Emotional Season 2 Premiere
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the Season 2 premiere of “Andi Mack.”]

In its second season premiere, “Andi Mack” goes straight for the heart and holds nothing back. Disney Channel announced this week that one of its characters would begin a journey to discovering his identity as a gay individual, and it doubled the runtime for the episode to give space to properly explore this storyline alongside the main plot.

It was reported that creator Terri Minsky had consulted with child development experts, as well as Common Sense Media, GLAAD, and Pflag in order to make sure the story be told in a manner that was both respectful and appropriate to the age group. This depth of care shows because how Cyrus (Joshua Rash) slowly begins to realize he’s gay and discusses this with his friend Buffy (Sofia Wylie) is note-perfect in many ways. “Andi Mack” has always had a deft hand balancing the fun of a kids show with heartfelt stories that actually feel genuine,

Asian World Film Festival Broadens Already-Wide Embrace

Georges Chamchoum has a simple mission: He wants to share the rich and varied offerings from Asian filmmakers with Hollywood players and beyond.

A cultural counter force to Washington isolationism, he has lined up a wide array of screenings, panels and tributes for the third annual Asian World Film Festival. The eight-day event kicks off Oct. 25 in Culver City and concludes Nov. 2, sponsored in part by Variety.

This year’s installment is the broadest yet in scope. Movies range from “Dearest Sister,” the first film from Laos submitted for a foreign-language Oscar, and

Little Gandhi,” Syria’s first entry in that category, to pioneering Hollywood drama “Joy Luck Club,” part of a beefed-up Asian-American focus.

Opening-night movie “Ayla: The Daughter of War” sets the tone. Directed by Can Ulkay, it centers on an orphan and a Turkish soldier during the Korean War and is Turkey’s official foreign-language submission in the Academy Awards.

Chamchoum considers

Asian American TV Actors Expose the Difficulty of Landing Parts – With or Without an Accent

Asian American TV Actors Expose the Difficulty of Landing Parts – With or Without an Accent
Daniel Dae Kim made headlines this year for leaving “Hawaii Five-0” over issues of pay inequality, and later, for replacing actor Ed Skrein as a Japanese-American character in the big-screen remake of “Hellboy.” Both instances involved how Asian Americans are still underrepresented in the entertainment industry, and it’s an issue that requires more discussion in order to foster understanding of how the so-called “model minority” continues to be marginalized.

It wasn’t that long ago that very few actors of Asian descent were even considered Hollywood stars. In an interview with IndieWire, Kim reflected on the few Asian actors who were his role models growing up.

“The only two that I can think of were Bruce Lee and George Takei. They were the only two,” he said. “I was a big ‘Star Trek’ fan when I was a kid, and I would watch Mister Sulu all the time. Bruce Lee,

Review: The Zeta Project

  • Comicmix
Lost amid the hubbub over the animated series based on the traditional DC Comics was The Zeta Project, a fun spinoff from Warner Animation’s first original creation, Batman Beyond. Thanks to Warner Archives the two season series, spanning 2001-2002, is being released on DVD.

The series is focused on Zeta (Diedrich Bader), formally known as Infiltration Unit Zeta, a synthoid, who works for the Nsa. The machine was introduced in the season two Batman Beyond episode “Zeta,” written by Robert Goodman, who developed the spinoff.

He violates his programming when he is asked to kill an innocent and goes on the run, vowing never to kill again. Of course, the Nsa wants him back and sends a team, led by the clichéd obsessive, Agent James Bennett (the well-cast Kurtwood Smith), convinced Brother’s Day, the terrorists reprogrammed the agency’s machine. He’s often accompanied by the arrogant Agent
