Attended Columbia University on a music scholarship graduating with B.A. and B.S. degrees. Composed music and played concert piano.

Was discovered for movies while in Philadelphia to help launch the U.S.S. Oklahoma City. That city's mayor was a family friend and asked Loren to give a speech. Max Arnow, head of Columbia Studios Talent heard him and offered him a screen test in New York.
