Following her untimely death, UCLA created the Diane Thomas Screenwriting Award.
At the time of her death, she was working on a project called "Blond Hurricane" and had finished a draft of a sequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981).
Reportedly, she was working in a cafe to support herself while writing scripts. One day a customer came in and she pitched a script idea to him. The customer was Michael Douglas and the pitch was for Romancing the Stone (1984).
Michael Douglas, the producer of "Romancing the Stone" gave Diane a Porsche sports vehicle as a gift for her script. Weeks later, she died in that same car when her drunk boyfriend veered off the street.
