Magnolia Pictures Expands Subscription Service, But Not at the Expense of Theatrical Business

Magnolia Pictures has been at the forefront of specialty film distribution in North America for over a decade, maintaining its foothold in the theatrical market even as it blossomed in the growing digital marketplace. In 2018 alone, the company found major success with two eventual Oscar nominees — documentary “Rbg,” which grossed over $14 million at the box office, and foreign-language contender “Shoplifters,” which made over $3 million. At the same time, Magnolia was quietly exploring another phase of growth, launching the subscription service Magnolia Selects with virtually no fanfare.

Now, as the monthly service expands from availability on Amazon Prime to Roku, Magnolia Selects is ready for its closeup. The streaming-vod service collates hundreds of films from Magnolia’s library that aren’t on other Svod platforms, making them available to audiences for $4.99 month. While that alone may not set the service apart from others out there, Magnolia’s library is distinguished by

Avengers: Endgame directors admit to manipulating trailer footage to keep fans guessing

Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors for Avengers: Endgame, have admitted to manipulating footage in the trailer to keep fans guessing about what happens.

Trailers are a huge part of a film’s marketing campaign, playing a big role in building hype and anticipation. One complaint, however, is that trailers give too much of a movie’s plot away and this is something that has played on the minds of Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo.

Fans have been noticing more and more that trailers for big films often contain footage that is actually nowhere to be seen in the final movie and now the Russo’s have admitted that manipulating shots like this has been a tactic for them in keeping people guessing.

Speaking to Empire (via ComingSoon.net), Joe Russo revealed they: “use all the material that we have at our disposal to create a trailer. We

Despite Ongoing Peace Talks, Netflix Won’t Have Any Movies at Cannes 2019 (Exclusive)

  • Variety
Although Netflix and the Cannes Film Festival continue quietly to negotiate a potential settlement to their differences, the streaming giant will be absent from the Croisette again this year with no film in or out of competition, Variety has learned.

The ongoing talks between the two sides have been friendly, including a dinner in Los Angeles just over a week ago with Netflix’s Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber and Cannes artistic director Thierry Fremaux, who was in town for a summit hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press, one insider said. The meeting was one of several held since Netflix and Cannes’ bitter spat before last year’s festival, which led the streamer to take “Roma” to Venice instead, where it won the Golden Lion.

But no solution has been found yet that would allow a Netflix title to return to Cannes’ competition lineup. In any case, it does not

2020 Oscar Predictions: Best Supporting Actress

2020 Oscar Predictions: Best Supporting Actress
While the Best Supporting Actress Oscar is often awarded to an ingenue, it can also be a way to reward a more season performer who has been overlooked by the academy in the past. Indeed, that is just what happened at the 2019 Academy Awards when Regina King took home this Oscar for her scene-stealing performance in “If Beale Street Could Talk.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2020 Oscars predictions for Best Supporting Actress.)

While King was clearly a featured player in her picture, two of her rival nominees, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, could easily have submitted themselves in lead for their roles in “The Favourite.” But the studio decided to campaign only their co-star, Olivia Colman, for Best Actress and this proved to be a winning strategy. Stone and Weisz were both Oscar winners already with the former prevailing in lead for “La La Land” in 2017 and the latter

2020 Oscar Predictions: Best Actress

2020 Oscar Predictions: Best Actress
Historically the Best Actress Oscar has usually been awarded to an ingenue while the Best Actor prize is typically taken by a veteran. But these age biases could be changing. While a whopping 32 of the 92 Best Actress champs at the have been in their 20s when they picked up their Oscars, the last two women to win were 60-year-old Frances McDormand and 45-year-old Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”). And Colman’s closest rival was Glenn Close (“The Wife”), who was hoping for her first win at age 71. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2020 Oscars predictions for Best Actress.)

Fifteen of the 92 Best Actress winners, including Colman, were in their 40s when they took to the stage while 34 were thirtysomething. Julianne Moore was 54 when she finally won after four losses for “Still Alice” in 2015. The only other Best Actress winner in her 50s was theater veteran Shirley Booth who won for reprising

Stephanie Daley, starring Tilda Swinton and Amber Tamblyn, followed in 2006, a mystery both legal and existential about an unwanted pregnancy. And now there’s South Mountain, which finds Brougher working with her smallest budget yet but with a […]
