From ‘Roseanne’ to ‘The Walking Dead’ to ‘House of Cards,’ The Actor Who’s ‘Number 1 on the Call Sheet’ Changes Everything

From ‘Roseanne’ to ‘The Walking Dead’ to ‘House of Cards,’ The Actor Who’s ‘Number 1 on the Call Sheet’ Changes Everything
For some actors, being the star of a TV show is a dream come true. But it’s also an incredible responsibility — one that, if ignored, has mammoth repercussions for the careers of those around them.

If your show gets canceled because of something you did, as with Roseanne Barr earlier this year, a hundred or more people on the crew could be out of work. Similarly, production on “House of Cards” stopped for three months after sexual misconduct allegations against Kevin Spacey prompted his removal for the show — the series returned, but with a shortened episode order.

“I think it’s fair to say that there is a responsibility that does exist,” said Yvonne Strahovski of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” “You set the bar for the day and how things play out.”

The “number one on the call sheet,” which refers to the order that actors will be listed on the daily production record,

Three CBS Rookies Get Full Seasons, 'Happy Together' in Limbo

CBS has extended the orders for three more of its freshman series: the comedy The Neighborhood and the dramas Magnum P.I. and God Friended Me.

Missing from the list is The Neighborhood's Monday night companion, Happy Together. The network has not yet made a decision on the show, which is toplined by Damon Wayans Jr. — whose deal to star in the series was the richest this season — and Amber Stevens West.

The Murphy Brown revival is staying at 13 episodes, as was the plan when it was picked up.

CBS declined to say how many additional episodes of each show it ...

Wayans and Wayans Jr. have previously shared scenes on comedies “Happy Endings” (Wayans Jr.’s show) and “My Wife and Kids” (the older Damon Wayans’ show).

Damon Wayans, Jr. on the Time He Almost Got Expelled, Until His Dad Chased the Gym Teacher — Turn It On Podcast
Growing up, Damon Wayans, Jr. often had Hollywood royalty in his home, as when Michael Jordan moved in next door while shooting “Space Jam.” Said Wayans, “I used to come home and he’d be in my kitchen. I’m like, ‘Go home, Michael Jordan! Drink your own juice!’ But Michael Jordan in your house, I thought that was cool. There have been other famous people in my house and I was like, ‘Please leave.'”

Welcome to “Remote Controlled,” a podcast from Variety featuring the best and brightest in television, both in front of and behind the camera.

In this week’s episode, Variety’s associate features editor of TV, Danielle Turchiano, talks with “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” co-creators Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh McKenna about the final season of their CW musical comedy.

Listen to this week’s podcast for free below and at Apple Podcasts:

McKenna says the series’ four seasons are “remarkably accurate” to the initial pitch to the network in 2015. “We really conceived of it beginning, middle, and end,” she says. “We really knew this was just going to be about this period in this girl’s life where she’s subject to a very intense romantic obsession and then recovers from it.”

While the season starts with her in jail after pleading guilty to pushing her stalker ex, Trent (Paul Welsh), off a building,

CBS' Happy Together: Grade It!

A pair of family sitcoms made their debuts on CBS Monday night, including the Damon Wayans Jr. vehicle Happy Together, which finds an ordinary couple suddenly housing a famous musician.

Wayans Jr. (Happy Endings) and Amber Stevens West (The Carmichael Show) star as accountant Jake and restaurant designer Claire, a happily married couple who have fallen into a comfortable — if somewhat boring — routine. Case in point: They schedule sex and spend their free time recording new outgoing messages for their voicemail inbox.

All of that gets shaken up, though, when one of Jake’s clients — the massively famous singer Cooper James

‘Happy Together’ Review: Harry Styles’ CBS Sitcom Plays Like a Parody of Itself — and It Works

‘Happy Together’ Review: Harry Styles’ CBS Sitcom Plays Like a Parody of Itself — and It Works
Some of history’s most star-making sitcoms are built on the flimsiest premises. “Bosom Buddies” is about men who masquerade as women so they can live in an affordable apartment — and that gave us Tom Hanks. “Welcome Back Kotter” is about a high school teacher who goes back to his Brooklyn-based alma mater — and that gave us John Travolta. “Cheers” is about a bar and we still got Woody Harrelson, Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman, and no one else. So even though “Happy Together” may sound like a hard pass based solely on its description — a famous teen heartthrob moves in with a complacent married couple — the point is this: Don’t dismiss a TV show because of a goofy start, and don’t give up on “Happy Together” after its pilot.

Based on executive producer Harry Styles’ two years spent living in fellow executive producer Ben Winston’s attic, “Happy Together

Harry Styles in an Attic: The True Stories and Inspirations Behind the 2018 New Fall TV Shows

Harry Styles in an Attic: The True Stories and Inspirations Behind the 2018 New Fall TV Shows
This fall, Harry Styles is adding a new gig to his repertoire: Executive producer. Specifically, he's an executive producer on the new CBS sitcom Happy Together, which stars Damon Wayans Jr. and Amber Stevens West as a happily content couple whose lives are upended by a super famous popstar coming to live with them. Styles is involved in the show because it's loosely based on a time in his life when he went to live in producer Ben Winston's attic for nearly two years. During the CBS portion of the Summer 2018 TCA press tour in August, Winston, who is also an Ep on The Late Late Show with James Corden, shared the full story of Harry Styles living in his house. "A few years ago, maybe seven or...

TV Review: ‘Happy Together’ on CBS

  • Variety
TV Review: ‘Happy Together’ on CBS
In their breakout TV roles, Damon Wayans Jr. (“Happy Endings”) and Amber Stevens West (“The Carmichael Show”) proved themselves to be perfect sitcom utility players. Both were tasked at times with lending grounding reality to ensemble series that only just managed to keep their balance without spiraling into mania, and both displayed their own amiable willingness to indulge and heighten their respective show’s quirk.

What a shame, then, that two such talented performers are marooned on CBS’s “Happy Together,” a show whose title says it all; unlike even most of CBS’s prime-time comedy slate, it fundamentally lacks a point-of-view or anything that help it break free from the generic—even as its stars struggle against a tide bearing them back to the bygone era where this show’s jokes seem to have originated. A running joke in “Happy Together’s” pilot revolves around our central couple’s

‘The Neighborhood’ and ‘Happy Together’ Teams on Pulling from Personal Lives for Sitcoms

  • Variety
Despite CBS rolling out two sitcoms that are both inspired by real-life events, the creative teams behind “The Neighborhood” and “Happy Together” insist family dynamics, rather than topical elements, will be at the core of both shows.

“We aren’t a show that’s like, ‘This week, ‘The Neighborhood’ takes on ‘this issue.’ I don’t think you ever teach anyone anything by telling them, by proselytizing, by poking and saying, ‘This is what you should think,’” “The Neighborhood” showrunner Jim Reynolds said at the Paley Fall TV Preview event Wednesday. “It’s about individuals, it’s not about black and white. … I’m a big believer in you win hearts, and then you change minds.”

The Neighborhood” is based on Reynolds’ own experience of moving into a historically black neighborhood in Pasadena, California, and learning about local issues that were new to him. The show centers around patriarch Calvin Butler,
