Axel Springer was born on May 2, 1912 in Hamburg, Germany as Axel Cäsar Springer. He was married to Friede Springer, Helga Ludewig-Sarre Alsen, Rosemarie Lorenz Alsen, Erna Frieda Berta Küster Holm and Martha Else Meyer. He died on September 22, 1985 in Berlin, Germany.

Der Verleger (2001) is based on his life, his alter ego is played by Heiner Lauterbach.
Had three children: Barbara (born in 1933) with Martha Meyer, Axel Junior (aka Sven Simon, born in 1942, committed suicide on 3 January 1980) with Erna Holm and Raimund Nicolaus (born in 1962) with Helga Alsen.
Founded the German publishing house Axel Springer GmbH, best known for its tabloids Bild and Bild am Sonntag as well as popular magazines (1947).
