Brendan Fraser saved the world from mummies twice. How can someone follow up success like that? By saving the world from mummies a third time! When he signed on for another Mummy sequel, he was working with a new director and new writers. Some of his co-stars were recast. Some were absent. But his task remained the same: stop the rampage of a power-hungry walking corpse. That’s what he set out to do in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor… and it’s time to figure out What Happened to This Horror Movie.
Fraser played treasure hunter Rick O’Connell in the 1999 reboot of the Universal Monsters classic The Mummy and its 2001 sequel The Mummy Returns. Both movies were written and directed by Stephen Sommers – but Sommers had no intention of directing a third Mummy film. After making the second one, he was ready to work on smaller projects.

In 2024, we have no need to try and make vampires happen. They have already happened for at least a century, and they're very much still happening: stories about vampires have saturated just about every medium there is. Weirdly, though, we may have to work a little harder to make the vampire happen again — as in the most legendary bloodsucker of all: Dracula.
In fairness, it may not be Dracula himself whose popularity is waning, but rather movies about him. Ever since his screen debut in the lost film "Dracula's Death" in 1921, barely a decade has gone by without some iteration of the Count turning up in cinemas, which is partially why the character has undergone so many various iterations. Like all fictional creations who've been built to last, Dracula endures by embracing change. Yet there can always been too much of a good thing; the last several films to prominently...

The Mummy franchise has long been a fan-favorite one, even though some of its installments may not have been that well-received by fans. Since 1999, the film series under Stephen Sommers has been doing everything in its power to leave fans absolutely baffled and captivated to the core. Then there was Tom Cruise’s titular film from 2017, which, well, wasn’t all that loved by viewers.

However, even after the release of so many installments, with some of them being critical blockbusters while others cease to grab the opportunities perfectly, a new installment from the saga is currently in the works. And this one might as well make one really major Brendan Fraser-Tom Cruise scenario a reality by bringing back both actors to the fan-favorite franchise.

A little over seven years after the last attempt to reboot the property failed, Blumhouse have revealed they're working on a new Mummy movie. The horror franchise first launched in 1932 and was part of the Universal Classic Monsters collection, with Boris Karloff portraying the titular entity before passing the reins on to Tom Tyler, Lon Chaney Jr. and Eddie Parker. The years since have seen two rebooted versions of The Mummy franchise, beginning with the Brendan Fraser-led movies from Stephen Sommers, which also included the Scorpion King spinoffs, and Tom Cruise's failed 2017 reboot meant to launch the interconnected Dark Universe.
The official Blumhouse Twitter page have unveiled that a new Mummy movie is in the works from writer/director Lee Cronin, who recently excelled with Evil Dead Rise. The post features a script page with the title scratched out featuring Cronin's credit with "Original Screenplay by" and both...

Tom Cruise has been a part of many franchises and has single-handedly revived the exhibition industry with Top Gun: Maverick after it received a huge blow due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, there was one franchise that seemed to be beyond saving and that was The Mummy.
Cruise starred in Universal’s reboot of The Mummy directed by Alex Kurtzman. While the intended beginning of the Dark Universe ended before it even started, a fan-made trailer for a sequel titled The Mummy: Tomb of Secrets starring Keanu Reeves has been making the rounds, reinvigorating interest in the franchise.

2002's epic The Scorpion King reinvented the titular character after his debut in The Mummy Returns. The Scorpion King depicts the ancient origins of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's character, "Mathayus of Akkad," who first appeared in 2001's The Mummy Returns as a villain. Unlike the second film in director Stephen Sommers's The Mummy movie series, the first of the Scorpion King movies features Mathayus's humble beginnings as an assassin-for-hire before turning into a legendary Akkadian hero.
The Scorpion King may be a prequel to The Mummy films, but the story spins off from the latter franchise into its own larger narrative. Like any other genre, fantasy movies can include dark and intense themes that make the mystical elements of the story terrifying. Whether it's through a genuinely frightening villain or serious plot points that make the stakes all too real, these narratives intend to leave the audience thinking about what they've seen and how it relates to the real world. The use of metaphor and allusion to true events is what makes fantasy such a popular genre, especially darker works of fiction that push the viewer to interrogate complex conversations about human nature.
While many darker additions to the genre are the best R-rated fantasy movies, these films don't need to warrant an R-rating to have a frightening and serious tone. Explicit violence and gore contribute to the darkness of a project, but there are many other ways that implied action and terror can be just as effective. Darkness can also be defined by tough choices,...

For over a decade, a reboot of the classic Universal Monsters property The Mummy languished in development hell. The project was originally intended to be a dark, low budget horror story. Then executives decided it should be a larger budgeted adventure film. So in 1999, writer/director Stephen Sommers delivered a version of The Mummy that was packed with action, adventure, humor… and some creepy mummy stuff. It was a massive box office success – so, of course, a sequel was put on the fast track to production. And now we’re going to look back more than twenty years to find out What the F*ck Happened to The Mummy Returns.
Getting the ‘99 Mummy to the screen had been a long, painful process. Many different writers and directors had come and gone before Stephen Sommers got involved. Getting The Mummy Returns made was much easier. And the process began on the first movie’s opening weekend.

In the very first action set piece of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, a chopper gets shot out of the sky, crashing in front of a truck carrying heroes that includes Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans). The scene which follow would set the tone for the rest of movie. After that fiery explosion, there is an all-out assault on the soldiers, who do their best to repel the black-clad Cobra troopers. Alas, the heroes’ weapons are no match for the terrorists’ superior tech.
A funny thing, however, is also occurring in this scene—an element which borders on distracting. The camera focuses less on the carnage circling around the heroes and more on the recognizable IP of their vehicles and uniforms. The lens flies past the nose of the Cobra ship attacking Duke and Ripcord in order to instead highlight the high-tech missiles on its side. Each...

The Mummy. The studio has returned to these characters multiple times over the decades. But the one that has had the most successful revival was the Mummy, who was brought back to the screen in a family friendly adventure film in 1999. So let’s take a look back at the making of The Mummy ‘99 and find out What the F*ck Happened to This Horror Movie.
To properly cover The Mummy, we first have to flash back to 1922. That’s when the discovery – and the opening – of Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun’s tomb captured the world’s imagination.

Fraser’s dashing American soldier of fortune ventures to the ancient Egyptian city of the dead in this good-natured and entertainingly silly film
Twenty-five years ago, action-adventure maestro Stephen Sommers had a big summer hit on his hands; as writer and director he had revived the renowned Universal Studios scary-movie brand as a fun family film in the Indiana Jones style. Arnold Vosloo had the role that Boris Karloff played in the 1930s: Imhotep, the high priest bandaged up for death by mummification on account of his treachery in ancient Egypt and accidentally brought back from the undead thousands of years later by romantic adventurers and scamps of the 20th century’s Jazz Age, seeking excitement and enlightenment in Egypt.

Brendan Fraser's dangerous stunt during The Mummy knocked him out but didn't stop his dedication to the role. Fraser insisted he wear a noose during a stunt, rather than let a dummy do it. However, it knocked him unconscious for ten seconds. The Mummy remains popular to this day, sparking a franchise that could still be continued today.

Despite Hugh Jackman starring in successful movies, 2004's Van Helsing remains a missed opportunity for Dracula films. Many of Jackman's roles outside the X-Men franchise have been both critically acclaimed and commercially successful. Van Helsing had potential due to Jackman's fame and director Stephen Sommers' track record, but the movie failed to impress critics.
Despite starring in many successful movies over the years, Hugh Jackman has also appeared in his fair share of duds, with a horror movie from 2004 remaining the biggest missed opportunity in the history of Dracula movies. Jackman first rose to fame playing the role of Logan/Wolverine in Fox's X-Men movies, beginning with 2000's X-Men. Since then, the actor has played numerous roles across a variety of genres. While Hugh Jackman's best movies have been both critically and commercially successful, his worst films have been panned by reviewers and have performed poorly at the box office.

Patricia Velásquez long ago made peace with the fact that she and Egypt will be eternally linked. It’s an amusing quirk of fate for the Venezuelan actor since she grew up not in the sun-soaked deserts of North Africa, but rather the lush greenery of Latin America and France. She is a woman of proud Indigenous Wayuu descent and of a multicultural childhood that took her all over the world. Just never that part of it. Nonetheless, because of a movie she did a quarter-century ago—because of The Mummy—when friends, family, and even strangers think of the Land of the Pharaohs, they think of Patricia Velásquez. They think of Anck-Su-Namun.
“Can you believe I still have not been to Egypt?” Velásquez muses when we catch up with her over Zoom ahead of The Mummy’s 25th anniversary. “But somehow I seem to be connected to it a lot.

Twenty-five years ago, director Stephen Sommers turned a respected, but admittedly pretty dusty, Universal horror movie into a rip-roarin’ adventure. It’s fair to say all these years later that 1999’s The Mummy the best Indiana Jones movie not directed by Steven Spielberg. And yet, when Universal wanted to remake it again, they didn’t even bother to consult Sommers.
Is it any wonder, then, that 2017’s The Mummy was a colossal flop?
Talking with Sommers about the 25th anniversary of The Mummy ’99, The Hollywood Reporter asked if he had any involvement with the 2017 film, to which the director gave a short, clear response.
“No,” he answered. “Actually, I was kind of insulted because the writers and director of that Tom Cruise one, no one ever contacted me. I contact people if I was going to take over somebody’s thing.”

Stephen Sommers directed the first two movies, passing the baton to Rob Cohen for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Then, in 2017, The Mummy franchise was rebooted as part of Universal's short-lived "Dark Universe."
Tom Cruise took centre stage in what proved to be a rare critical and commercial flop for the A-Lister, and Sommers recently shared his thoughts on the movie while talking to The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com).
"No," he responded when asked if the studio reached out to him. "Actually, I was kind of insulted because the writers and director [Alex Kurtzman] of that Tom Cruise one, no one ever contacted me. I contact people if I...

Sommer felt insulted by Tom Cruise's 2017 Mummy remake as nobody reached out to him for consultation. Sommer's action-driven Mummy reboot in 1999 was a box office hit. Tom Cruise's 2017 Mummy movie failed critically and commercially, halting the planned The Dark Universe.
Stephen Sommers, the director of the 1999 The Mummy remake, reveals that he felt insulted by Tom Cruises 2017 reboot of the horror movie franchise. The original movie dates back to 1932 with the Universal Boris Karloff-led movie. The franchise received multiple reboots, including from Universal Pictures and Hammer Film Productions. Stephen Sommers brought the franchise to the modern era with three feature-length movies and, more recently, a Tom Cruise-led reboot that was meant to kick off The Dark Universe.
25 years after the release of Stephen Sommers The Mummy reboot, the veteran director revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he felt insulted by the release of the 2017 The Mummy remake which Alex Kurtzman directed.

Whenever we talk about The Mummy franchise, the first character that comes to our mind is Brendan Fraser’s Rick O’Connell, set in the 1920s Egypt, the film revolves around the adventurer and a librarian who unknowingly releases Imhotep, a centuries-old mummy. The group takes responsibility as they prevent the rise of the evil pharaoh, and stop him from destroying the world.

The 1999 film was a massive hit as it received two more sequels, making it one of the best trilogies out there. However, in 2017, fans were disappointed when they learned that instead of getting a 4th film featuring the original cast, the $1.4 billion franchise would get a reboot. Needless to say, the film was not liked by the fans of the original series. But now, the wait for The Mummy 4 featuring Fraser comes to an end as the film’s director gives an update.

Brendan Fraser has been seeing a revival in his career after he won the Oscar for his role in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale. However, the actor will always be known for his role as Rick O’Connell in the horror adventure film The Mummy. Directed by Stephen Sommers, the film made him a bonafide star and turned the franchise into a huge asset for Universal Studios.
While Fraser shot to worldwide fame with The Mummy and its sequel The Mummy Returns, the latter also turned another upcoming actor into a star. Dwayne Johnson, who was a rising star at WWE at the time, made a cameo as the Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns, leading him to receive his own spinoff film a year later.

While Brendan Fraser was already an established actor in the ’90s, thanks to Encino Man and George of the Jungle, it was The Mummy franchise that propelled his career to new heights. However, working on the acclaimed adventure horror wasn’t all sunshine and roses for the Oscar winner, as his inclination to perform his own stunts would end up taking a toll on his health.
Stephen Sommers, who directed the first two Mummy features, recalled Fraser’s fearless spirit on set, which led him to nearly choke himself after a rope stunt went wrong.

Brendan Fraser’s The Mummy would’ve had a different actor playing a crucial role in the film. During a recent interview, director Stephen Sommers revealed that he tried to cast a famous Star Wars actor in the film. The character of Ardeth Bay in the film was initially written for an older actor and Sommers tried to cast Darth Vader actor James Earl Jones in the role. The director also considered Roscoe Lee Browne in the role, but both actors were busy with other projects.

Sommers then had to rewrite the character to be played by a much younger actor and cast Israeli actor Oded Fehr in the role. The character returned once again in the sequel film, The Mummy Returns, in 2001.

Stephen Sommers knows nothing about a possible Mummy 4 starring Brendan Fraser. The Mummy 1999 director indicates that he's out-of-the-loop at Universal after executive turnover. Sommers says he would, however, work with all his Mummy actors again, be it a fourth installment or another project.
Brendan Fraser's long-awaited The Mummy 4 gets an update from director Stephen Sommers. Fraser played a swashbuckling hero in Sommers 1999 action-adventure hit reboot of the Universal Classic Monsters franchise, then returning along with Sommers for its 2001 sequel The Mummy Returns. Sommers bailed out after the second film in the franchise, but Fraser himself came back for 2008s Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, with Rob Cohen at the helm.

"'The Mummy' isn't really trying to scare you – it's trying to entertain you." This is what /Film's Chris Evangelista lovingly wrote of 1999's "The Mummy" in 2021. Directed by Stephen Sommers and starring Brendan Fraser as the swashbuckling Rick O'Connell, the film became a somewhat unexpected hit, so much so that it ended up being one of the highest-grossing films of 1999 overall. Critics were a bit mixed on it in its day. It was an action/adventure film, the likes of which Hollywood had released many times before. Be that as it may, a film designed purely to entertain (rather than to scare) resonated with audiences in a big way. It was pulpy lightning in a bottle.

1999 was an amazing year for movies. But, among all the classics like The Matrix, Fight Club, Being John Malkovich, Magnolia, Go, Three Kings, and so many more, one that often gets overlooked is The Mummy. Originally, the summer of ’99 was supposed to be all about Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, but a few weeks before that movie opened, The Mummy turned out to be an unexpected smash for Universal Pictures, with it spawning two sequels, a spin-off movie, and (less cool), a reboot.
With the movie turning twenty-five, the film’s director Stephen Sommers, revisited the film during an extended sit-down with THR. For those who may not be aware of his career, Sommers made a whole slew of super-fun adventure movies in the 90s, including a really solid re-imagining of The Jungle Book for Disney and the creature feature Deep Rising. Tom Cruise is known for his action-hero persona in Hollywood. The actor has played many roles which has allowed him to flex his acting muscles as well as enabled him to perform death-defying stunts. He has headlined major franchises such as Mission: Impossible, and Top Gun, and has featured in one-off action blockbusters such as Knight and Day.
Cruise was also part of the disastrous The Mummy reboot in 2017, which was a box office failure and officially shut down the Dark Universe before it even began. However, before he came on board the ill-fated franchise, he was rumored to be in the running for the original films starring Brendan Fraser along with Brad Pitt as well. Director Stephen Sommer, however, debunked the rumors.

People went into the theatres despite several other releases like Challengers and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire running there to boost the classic’s box office collections.
The movie will turn twenty-five this year and will always be one of the best movies about Egypt’s mummies in cinema history. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz‘s chemistry captivated us and will always remain close to our hearts. The film did well at the box office back then and has managed to bring some loyal audience to the theatres.
Earlier this month reports about The Mummy re-releasing in the theatres were all over the media.

1999's The Mummy was almost a very different movie. Stephen Sommers almost didn't direct The Mummy, with Wes Craven, Clive Barker, and George A. Romero almost helming the film. Brendan Fraser was almost not cast as the lead in the movie, with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt also being offered the part.
The Mummy went through a lot of evolution and change during the development and production of the film, which almost resulted in a very different movie. Boris Karlof's The Mummy was one of the foundational pieces of the Universal Movie Monster franchise, inspiring several films in that franchise. When the time came to reimagine the film decades later though, Universal was more torn on how to proceed. After over a decade in various stages of development, The Mummy was released in 1999 to massive box office success.

Brendan Fraser’s The Mummy is celebrating its 25th birthday, with the first part being released in 1999. Since then, the film has become part of a series, with the release of The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Three movies were not enough for some fans, however, as many have been begging for more additions to the story, even though the last part was released more than ten years ago.

Universal Pictures’ The Mummy franchise was a fan favorite when it starred Brendan Fraser as the leading man Rick O’Connell. The first two films in the trilogy were directed by Stephen Sommers, also starred Rachel Weisz and John Hannah, and were box office successes. However, the reboot starring Tom Cruise was a gigantic failure critically and commercially.
While Cruise’s film ended what Universal planned as a series of monster films with a shared universe, a recent fan-made trailer seemed to have followed it up with a new cast. The new trailer is titled The Mummy: Resurrection and sees Keanu Reeves take over the franchise to battle a new evil spirit buried in an Egyptian tomb.

As long as there is a Universal Studios, there will be Universal monster movies. Because though tastes may change from generation to generation, moviegoers will always have a hunger for new iterations of Dracula, Frankenstein, The Invisible Man and the Wolf Man.
Universal hasn't always had a good deal of luck with reimagining these legendary beasts over the years. The Stephen Sommers-spearheaded "Van Helsing" experiment died a very loud and expensive death in 2003, while the "Dark Universe" was infamously devoured by a black hole of disinterest when audiences rejected Tom Cruise's "The Mummy." But Universal scored a surprise hit with Leigh Whannell's $7 million-budgeted, Blumhouse-produced "The Invisible Man" in 2020, which inspired the studio develop projects that didn't have to be tethered to a shared universe.
Next up in the newfangled classic monsters lineup was set to be "The Wolf Man" starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Derek Cianfrance.

After spending years in development hell, during which time it passed through the hands of popular genre filmmakers like George A. Romero, Mick Garris, Clive Barker, and Joe Dante, a reboot of the 1932 Universal Monsters classic The Mummy made its way out into the world in 1999 with Deep Rising writer/director Stephen Sommers at the helm. Made on a budget of $80 million, the new take on The Mummy was a box office success, earning over $416 million worldwide. Mixing horror, adventure, and comedy, it was a film that could be enjoyed by adults while also serving as gateway horror for a new generation of genre fans. The 1999 film "The Mummy" went through several changes in directors before Stephen Sommers took over, resulting in a completely different movie with a mixture of action, adventure, and horror elements. The film's original directors, including George A. Romero and Clive Barker, had unique and dark concepts for "The Mummy" that were ultimately deemed too weird. Stephen Sommers' vision for "The Mummy" involved combining elements of "Indiana Jones" and classic horror, resulting in a successful romantic adventure with horror elements that pleased audiences.
The 1999 adventure film The Mummy was almost made by three different horror directors, who would have made completely different movies. The 1932 horror classic The Mummy, directed by Karl Freund and starring Boris Karloff, got a “remake” in the late 1990s, but with a completely different story. The Mummy kept Imhotep as the antagonist but introduced adventurer Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) and Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) as protagonists.

Cruise ship expert Wendy Williams critiques the accuracy of the ship tampering scene in Deep Rising, pointing out the unrealistic scrambling of the ship and the unnecessary use of sonar. Williams explains that in real-life situations, cruise ships have multiple communication backups and a smaller number of crew members on the bridge to handle emergencies. While Deep Rising initially had a lackluster reception, it has gained a growing fanbase over the years, with its memorable monster design and overall tone being appreciated by viewers.

Many of us have probably experienced that twinge of anxiety when elevator doors close behind us, but few of us have likely ever been down in the depths of a coal mine, where the elements at play have a potentially fatal outcome. This fear is what writer/director Mathieu Turi tries to tap into in The Deep Dark, to moderately successful results.

Deep Rising offers a lighter tone with a mix of comedy, horror, and action, while Dagon delivers a bloody twist on Lovecraft's eerie tales.
While a lot of famous horror movies have made the sea scary, underrated outings that explore the depths of the ocean can be particularly chilling. Horror movies set largely at sea are nothing new. Ever since Steven Spielberg’s Jaws helped define the summer blockbuster back in 1975, creature features have seen beaches flooded with all manner of sea monsters. From 1978’s Piranha all the way to 2018’s The Meg, the multiplex has often been home to sea-based horror stories. However, only a few choice horror movies explored the darkest depths of the ocean...
