(August 9 to 14, 1977) He acted in Neil Simon's play, "Prisoner of Second Avenue," in a Cherry County Playhouse production under the Dome at the Park Palace Hotel in Traverse City, Michigan. Pat Paulsen and Neil Rosen were artistic directors.

Dick's father who was a POW in WW II was thought to have died during the Bataan Death march. But Major Thomas Bolyn Smothers, Jr., a West Point Graduate, survived the Bataan Death March, and died later on a Japanese POW ship. He was buried at sea.
