‘I Am the Night': Chris Pine Investigates a Murder in First Trailer (Video)
Chris Pine and Patty Jenkins are teaming up for TNT’s “I Am the Night” limited series — and it looks like it will be creepier than “Wonder Woman.”

In the first trailer for the thriller — originally titled “One Day She’ll Darken” — Pine plays reporter Jay Singletary, who gets wrapped up in the story of Fauna Hodel (India Eisley), a young girl who is searching for her identity after learning she was adopted. Things take a dark turn when her search uncovers a thread that connects to the 1974 “Black Dahlia” murder.

Pine’s character explains that there’s a 15-year-old case that “this girl” knows all about. He finds Fauna and begins to dig deeper into the investigation, but it seems pretty clear that there’s someone out there who doesn’t want him to keep investigating.

Ghostly Aliens Attack in First Trailer for Netflix’s ‘Spectral’

Once set to be a wide release this past summer from Universal, they handed over the supernatural war film Spectral to Netflix, who will drop it next week. Not one for extensive marketing campaigns, the company has now released the first trailer for the film which follows a group of soldiers who are defending a city from an otherworldly force.

While its different elements look familiar, seeing sci-fi mashed up with a Black Hawk Down-esque scenario may prove to be entertaining. Add in the talents of James Badge Dale, Emily Mortimer, and Bruce Greenwood, and maybe this can be a respite from the fairly lackluster year of action cinema.

Directing by Nic Mathieu and also starring Max Martini, Clayne Crawford, Cory Hardict, Louis Ozawa Changchien, Jimmy Akingbola, Dylan Smith, Philip Bulcock, Royce Pierreson, Ursula Parker, and Mark O’Neal, check out the trailer below ahead of next week’s release.

Short Film: ‘Hangnail’ Is a Difficult Drama Filmed in a Single Take

Why Watch? An angry, bittersweet little film, this short from writer/director Cavan Campbell features a couple who would probably care deeply for each other if they could only push past the brick wall of their entrenched insecurities. Driven like a mac truck by Tasha Lawrence and Dylan Scott Smith’s fist-clenching performances, the outstanding single-take cinematography allows us to be passive observers. That’s equally comforting and frustrating as there are moments you feel lucky not to be cramped in the small bathroom with their anger and others where you want to grab Roz and Kenny, hold them close and promise them it’ll all be okay. It’s a portrait of sharing a difficult life that defies cliche and magnetizes empathy. What Will It Cost? About 11 minutes. A New Short Film Every Week Day

Blu-ray Review: Sophomoric ‘Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal’ Falls Flat

Chicago – Boris Rodriguez’s “Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal” tells a laughably inane story ripe for B-movie matinées, yet insists on taking itself (mostly) seriously. The director has made no secret of the fact that he envisions his film to be a meditation on the “darkness of creativity,” and the price that must be paid in order for an artist to find sufficient inspiration.

That could easily make an intriguing subject for a motion picture (and has many times before), but Rodriguez’s metaphorical horror tropes are so obvious and synthetic that they bore when they should provoke. That isn’t to say the film is lacking in the acting department (it isn’t) or doesn’t have some spectacularly unnerving imagery (kudos to Dp Philippe Kress), but on a story level, “Eddie” comes up mightily short. It might’ve made a fine short film, but at 83 minutes, it runs out
