Anthony Slide has been described as "a one-man publishing phenomenon"
by the Los Angeles Times and a "meticulous film scholar" by Daily
Variety. He has authored more than seventy books on the history of
popular entertainment and edited a further 150 volumes. Among his
pioneering works are books on early American cinema, early women
directors, the cinema and Ireland, a history of the Vitagraph Company
of America, a history of the non-theatrical film, and many others.
Aside from his work as a writer and historian, he has found time to
direct a number of documentaries relating to silent film history,
including the feature-length The Silent Feminists, work as a consultant
on a variety of film and television projects, and record a number of
DVD commentaries. In 1990, in recognition of his work on the history of
popular entertainment, Anthony Slide was awarded a honorary doctorate
of letters by Bowling Green University. At that time, he was hailed by
Lillian Gish as "our preeminent film historian of the silent era."
