Emmy episode analysis: Kumail Nanjiani explores a dark side of stand-up comedy in ‘The Twilight Zone’

Emmy episode analysis: Kumail Nanjiani explores a dark side of stand-up comedy in ‘The Twilight Zone’
Kumail Nanjiani earned his first ever Emmy nomination this year thanks to Jordan Peele‘s rebooted “The Twilight Zone” for CBS All Access. Though Nanjiani is a comedy wunderkind, his first shot at an Emmy comes courtesy of the Best Drama Guest Actor category. While the trippy episode titled “The Comedian” is steeped in science fiction and horror, Nanjiani appropriately portrays a struggling stand-up comic who strives for fame and success.

Nanjiani is an Emmy first timer, but he has plenty of history with the awards circuit thanks to his film “The Big Sick.” Nanjani starred as himself in the movie and wrote the screenplay for the romantic comedy with his wife Emily V. Gordon. The pair earned an Original Screenplay Oscar nomination and additional bids from the Critics’ Choice and Writers Guild.

In “The Comedian,” Nanjiani plays stand-up Samir Wassan.

Russell Crowe Stars as an Angry Driver in First Look at ‘Unhinged’
Cut off Russell Crowe in traffic at your own peril!

That’s the takeaway from the first look at “Unhinged,” an upcoming thriller that stars the Oscar-winning “Gladiator” actor as a man who takes road rage to frightening new levels. Crowe appears in the Solstice Studios release alongside Caren Pistorius, who portrays Rachel, a mother who hits the horn at the exact wrong moment. In the first look image, Crowe smolders with the fury of a thousand Maximuses.

“The mark of a great film is one that both entertains and sparks conversation,” director Derrick Borte said. “I believe, in a very terrifying way, ‘Unhinged’ does exactly that.”

Production on the film wraps on Sunday in New Orleans. “Unhinged,” planned for a third quarter 2020 release, marks Solstice Studios’ first production since launching last October. The studio aims to produce between three and five movies per year, with most films carrying budgets between $20 million and $80 million.

How Epix’s ‘Perpetual Grace Ltd’ Crew Uses Everyday Tech to Create Unique B&w Look

  • Variety
Epix drama “Perpetual Grace Ltd” brings a modern noir take on lawlessness and duplicity to the Old West. To play up a sense of timelessness, the crew mixed ingenuity and modern technology in realizing creators Steve Conrad and Bruce Terris’ seemingly simple idea of using black and white for the series’ key flashback scenes.

Set decorator Adrian Segura used the monochrome setting on his iPhone to get an idea of how things would look on camera. “The challenge was definitely to deliver a good set in color that was also going to shoot well in black and white,” he says.

The series wraps its 10-episode first season Aug. 4. It stars Jimmi Simpson as a young grifter and Ben Kingsley as his target, a pastor who turns out to be far more dangerous than he appears.

Segura recognized that for the actors to do their jobs well, the sets had to be believable in person,

Amazon Drops ‘Too Old To Die Young,’ ‘The Romanoffs,’ and ‘Patriot’ Amid Push for Next Blockbuster

In accordance with Amazon’s shifting originals strategy, the studio is prioritizing blockbuster content designed for global audiences over unique visions from independent artists. Jennifer Salke, the head of Amazon Studios, took the stage Saturday morning with co-heads of television Albert Cheng and Vernon Sanders and announced “Too Old To Die Young,” “The Romanoffs,” and “Patriot” would not be moving forward at the studio.

Salke first addressed Nicolas Winding Refn’s 13-hour crime noir, which seemed to fly a bit under the radar on Amazon after its Cannes premiere.

“Yes, we were happy with the show,” Salke said. “I was texting with Nic Refn this week.”

While Salke said she did not expect to pick up another installment of the limited series, the two maintain a good relationship and Amazon took Refn’s core audience into consideration when marketing the show. A reporter asked why he didn’t see the

Black Mirror: Celebrating The Most Uplifting Episodes

Rosie Fletcher Jun 13, 2019

Black Mirror isn’t all doom, gloom and smartphones making people’s legs fall off. Here’s half a dozen of its feel-good episodes.

Warning: contains plot spoilers for every episode listed.

Never having lost his critic’s ability to skewer a TV show in one perfect line, Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker does a recurring, self-deprecating bit about what audiences expect from his show. “A man frowning at a translucent phone and going ‘aaah, I’ve just deleted my own leg!’’’, he’ll say in a funny voice. In essence, that’s what people think Black Mirror is – sleek future technology meets lives falling apart.

Not always. Below are the Black Mirror episodes you can watch that won’t leave you with a pounding sense of doom or an unsettling image of the prime minister balls deep in your Sunday roast.

Believe it or not, here

Rhea Seehorn: 4 reasons why she’ll score her first Emmy nomination for ‘Better Call Saul’

For her fan-favorite role as Kim Wexler, Rhea Seehorn (“Better Call Saul”) currently ranks fourth in Gold Derby’s collective odds for Best Drama Supporting Actress, which has six nominations slots. This confidence is striking because the Emmys snubbed her for the first three seasons of AMC’s “Better Call Saul,” but Seehorn has much in her favor this year that she did not previously. Below, I lay out four reason why Seehorn will finally score her first Emmy bid this year.

SEEthe “Better Call Saul” DVDs that Emmy voters received.

1. She is out of the probationary period

It often takes years for the Emmys to nominate breakthrough performances, with consensus only forming initially for more familiar names. The most obvious parallel is Anna Gunn in “Breaking Bad.” Gunn was not nominated until the fourth season, then won Best Drama Supporting Actress the next two years. Co-star Aaron Paul became

Damon Herriman aims to take a break from villainy

Damon Herriman in ‘Perpetual Grace, Ltd.’

After portraying a succession of killers, psychotics and all-round bad dudes for the best part of 10 years, Damon Herriman is striving to play more upstanding characters.

With mixed success, it must be said. The actor cheerfully acknowledges his career has been in a purple patch for the last few years but says: “I have been in this business long enough to know it may not last. I had a 10-year run playing bad guys so now I am trying to steer clear of playing psychopaths and violent pigs.”

Not that he would turn down a juicy role as a villain.

Recently he wrapped shooting the second season of FX/Foxtel’s Mr Inbetween, which stars the creator Scott Ryan as professional hitman Ray Shoesmith. Nash Edgerton continues as the director of the comedy/action drama produced by Michele Bennett for Jungle Entertainment and Blue-Tongue Films.

‘Perpetual Grace, Ltd’ Ep On Not Following Traditional Noir Rules – Atx

‘Perpetual Grace, Ltd’ Ep On Not Following Traditional Noir Rules – Atx
“Noir is a genre that Roger Ebert described as being about characters who are smart enough to hatch a plan but not smart enough to pull it off… we adhere to that essentially,” said Steve Conrad, executive producer and showrunner of Epix new noir thriller, Perpetual Grace, Ltd.

While the crime drama may contain remnants of the noir tone, Conrad spoke on how the show bends the narrative in that with traditional neo-noir stories “the characters often turn on each other pretty quickly and it becomes an every man for themselves event. We’ve figured that the time that we share with the audience the demonstration will be that it is not material to succeeding or surviving. They’ll come to depend on each other pretty quickly. So it doesn’t follow that noir engineering.”

He continued, “The characters will start to love each other and start to support each
