Here's How You Can Watch Spoiler Alert At Home
2022 was something of a landmark year for mainstream queer cinema. Films like "Fire Island," "Crush," and "Anything's Possible" painted a far more authentic and inclusive mosaic of the 2Slgbtq+ community than the movies with mostly white cisgender casts -- many of which, as moving as they are, feature straight actors playing queer characters -- that have come before them, while at the same time broadening their focus beyond the typical queer issues and "tragic" stories Hollywood typically fixates on. Of course, there's always going to be room for fresh stories centered on plain ol' white queer guys, and 2022 had us covered there too, with romantic dramedies like "Bros" and "Spoiler Alert."

The latter movie, which flew under a lot of people's radars judging by the box office returns, is based on Michael Ausiello's 2017 memoir "Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies" and explores the real-life romance between its author (played by

How Awards Season Movies Break Out of the Celluloid Closet With More Stories About LGBTQ+ Characters

How Awards Season Movies Break Out of the Celluloid Closet With More Stories About LGBTQ+ Characters
When non-binary actor August Winter read Sarah Polley’s “Women Talking,” they were really excited about the prospect of playing the transgender character Melvin, who finds his identity in a specific, unfamiliar environment — in this case, amid a Mennonite community fighting toxic masculinity. Like most characters in the film, Melvin was a survivor of sexual assault, and Winter responded to the integrity in which Polley navigated his trauma.

“His [gender] identity was always a part of him,” they explain. “Especially because he doesn’t speak for much of the film, it was important to me to capture that feeling of somebody finding who they are through an event, not because of it.”

In this awards season, films featuring or centering on LGBTQ+ characters portray them as fully realized, complex people.

To understand Melvin, Winter pondered the meaning of knowing one’s identity but not being ready to be out yet. “I

2023 DGA Awards TV and Documentary Nominations Predictions: More Endings Than Beginnings

2023 DGA Awards TV and Documentary Nominations Predictions: More Endings Than Beginnings
The 75th annual Directors Guild of America Awards will announce nominations for the television categories Tuesday, January 10. Voting opened December 9 and runs through Friday, January 6. Awards will be given out Saturday, February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, CA. For more on the film ceremony, head to IndieWire’s Awards Calendar.

The Directors Guild Awards tend to have some interesting quirks, especially when it comes to the TV and Documentary categories. Just last year, the organization filled its Drama Series category full of “Succession” episodes, proving when directors love a show, they really love it. Though the list of Documentary nominees often has crossover with the Oscars, last year was also an example of how TV-specific projects like Raoul Peck’s HBO docuseries “Exterminate All the Brutes” can break in too.

Add in rules about how shows need to be a DGA signatory, or the director Hwang Dong-hyuk a DGA member,

‘Spoiler Alert’ reviews: It’s ‘a beautifully balanced and well-paced film’ that ‘celebrates love and life’
Focus Features’ tearjerker “Spoiler Alert” is now open nationwide, and audiences everywhere are driving Kleenex stock through the roof. Based on TVLine founder Michael Ausiello‘s 2017 memoir “Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies,” the film is directed by Michael Showalter and it may or may not be the latest installment in the “Smurfs” movie series (you’ll have to watch it and decide for yourself). ‘The Whale’ Sets 2022 Specialty Box Office Record With 60,000 Per Theater Average

‘The Whale’ Sets 2022 Specialty Box Office Record With 60,000 Per Theater Average
A24 released Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale” in six theaters in New York and Los Angeles this weekend and set a new per theater average record for the year, bringing in 60,000 per venue.

There have been few glimmers of hope for the struggling specialty box office, but indie distributor A24 served one up this weekend, reporting 360,000 in grosses for “The Whale,” giving it an average of 60,000. That tops the previous record of 50,000 set by fellow A24 release “Everything Everywhere All at Once” back in March.

As encouraging as this result is the fact that a 60,000 theater average is enough to set an annual record shows how much the specialty market has collapsed. In pre-pandemic years, record averages would regularly top 100,000. In 2019, the top per theater average belonged to eventual Best Picture Oscar winner “Parasite,” which opened in three theaters in October and averaged just over 131,000.

Yesterday with 2.8M, the Ryan Coogler movie crossed the four century mark with a running cume of 401.55M, pacing 5 ahead of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness over 29 days.
