Stuart Ford Hires Michael Rothstein as Agc Distribution President

Stuart Ford’s Agc Studios has hired Michael Rothstein as president of worldwide distribution where he will oversee the studio’s worldwide sales and distribution activity.

Rothstein was previously president of international sales and distribution at Ford’s Im Global and, before that, president of international sales at the Weinstein Company.

Thursday’s news follows the March 12 announcement that Academy Award-winning feature film producer Greg Shapiro is re-teaming with Ford at Agc Studios as head of film. Agc Studios was announced in February with significant backing from three key strategic investors: Latin American private asset management firm MediaNet Partners; Silicon Valley entrepreneur and CEO Greg Clark; and Image Nation Abu Dhabi.

Stuart Ford’s newly-launched film and television venture Agc Studios has staffed up with a raft of senior executive hires.

The majority worked at Ford’s former outfit Im Global, which he founded in 2007 but left in August 2017 after a disagreement with Tang Media Partners, the Chinese company that bought Im Global in June 2016.

Academy Award-winning feature film producer Greg Shapiro is re-teaming with Stuart Ford at his recently launched AGC Studios as head of film.

Ford, who carries the titles of chairman and chief executive officer, made the announcement Monday. Shapiro will oversee all feature film development and production activity for the Los Angeles and London based studio.

Agc Studios was announced in February with significant backing from three key strategic investors: Latin American private asset management firm MediaNet Partners; Silicon Valley entrepreneur and CEO Greg Clark; and Image Nation Abu Dhabi. Producer Greg Shapiro has reunited with Stuart Ford and joined Agc Studios as head of film.

Shapiro, who won the Oscar for The Hurt Locker, worked as Ford’s president of film at Im Global since September 2016 and departed shortly after Tang Media Partners merged Im Global with Open Road to create Global Road Entertainment.

He will oversee all feature film development and production activity for the new Los Angeles and London-based company, and will also be a stakeholder in Agc Studios alongside chairman and CEO Ford and COO Miguel Palos.

Global Road targets $1bn production war chest

Company aiming for 15 annual Us releases by 2020.

Global Road Entertainment aims to amass a $1bn production war chest over the next three years as it targets 15 annual Us releases by 2020, eight or nine of which are anticipated to be developed and produced in-house.

The $1bn goal was announced to buyers at a private presentation in Berlin yesterday and it is understood the provenance of that funding could combine capital from Global Road owners Tang Media Partners (Tmp) and a cash raise.

The presentation at the Sony Center in Berlin on Thursday by president of worldwide theatrical marketing Jack Pan was accompanied by a sizzle reel of films by Global Road’s senior executive suite from their time at other studios, and hinted at the type of content CEO Rob Friedman wants to make.

Aviron has given an awards-season release date of Sept. 28 to “Serenity,” starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway.

Serenity” centers on a fishing boat captain (McConaughey), who is forced to grapple with his mysterious past after a glamorous woman (Hathaway) crashes up against his simple life on a small island in the Caribbean and leaves him questioning his reality. Jason Clarke (“Mudbound”), Djimon Hounsou (“In America”), and Diane Lane (“Unfaithful”) co-star in the film.

Serenity” was written and directed by Steven Knight. He previously helmed and wrote “Locke” with Tom Hardy, and penned the scripts for “Dirty Pretty Things” and “Eastern Promises.” The producers are Guy Heeley and Greg Shapiro.

Aviron Pictures has acquired “Serenity,” a thriller with Oscar-winners Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, and “A Private War,” a portrait of Marie Colvin with Oscar-nominee Rosamund Pike playing the legendary war correspondent, Variety has learned. Both films will debut theatrically in the fall of 2018, though a release date still has to be set.

The “Serenity” deal is for U.S. rights only, while the pact for “A Private War” encompasses rights in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.

“These two films are examples of how we’re trying to diversify our slate and work with top rate filmmakers and producers,” said Aviron Pictures president David Dinerstein.

Blake Lively’s spy thriller “The Rhythm Section” has landed a Feb. 22, 2019, release date from Paramount Pictures.

The studio has also dated an untitled Tyler Perry project for April 12, 2019. Paramount bought the rights to “The Rhythm Section” in August with “The Handmaid’s Tale” exec producer Reed Morano on board to direct from a script by Mark Burnell with James Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli producing. Im Global will finance the film.

The movie is a contemporary adaptation of the first of Burnell’s “Stephanie Patrick” series of four British novels. Lively will play the titular heroine, who is on a path to self-destruction after the death of her family in an airplane crash. After discovering from a journalist that the crash wasn’t an accident and watching that journalist get killed, she adapts the identity of an assassin in order to track down those responsible.
