Top 10 Grossers of 2011

Namaste, Sat Sri Akal, Assalaam-o-alaikum and welcome to my Christmas and new year present to all you Bollywood fanatics – a countdown of top the 10 grossing films of 2011. It’s been a year that saw 107 Bollywood releases, 5 of which made it into the list of the highly coveted ‘The Highest Grossing Films of Bollywood’.

2011 also saw four films cross the 100 crore mark for the first time in Indian cinematic history . Several films released this year experienced major commercial success worldwide, and if it’s possible to comprehend, the total net collections of the top ten films of 2011 is estimated at 840.31 crore (Us$170.41 million), which is already 14% up from 2010′s 735.07 crore (Us$149.07 million). 2011 has thus set the record for biggest cumulative top-ten-films collections of all time, and I thought we were experiencing a major worldwide financial crisis!

Vidya’s Item Girls

The Dirty Picture is due to set screens alight on Dec 2nd, when audiences can be transported back to the 80s when item girls stole the hearts of the nation. In the Balaji production, Vidya Balan plays the role of Silk, an up and coming item girl of southern cinema and follows her rise to fame. Although current actresses like Katrina Kaif and Mallika Sherawat have lit up screens in item songs in recent years, Ekta Kapoor looks to the 80s for her next film production where item girls were considered ahead of their time. Vidya Balan all set to play sex bomb Silk Smitha!

Believe it or not, Vidya Balan will soon play  the doomed sex bomb Silk Smitha. Sounds incredible? But producer Ekta Kapoor's  biopic on Silk Smitha titled The Dirty Picture will not focus on the sleaze but the tragedy behind the mask  of the sex symbol who provided  titillation to thousands  of viewers but died a lonely and tragic death.Producer Ekta Kapoor says, "I've been waiting for almost two years for the script to be ready. Now my writer Rajat Arora has finally put the finishing touches to the story of a woman who defied all conventions to become a sensation in the South but eventually committed suicide. Let me tell you, this will be  my most exhilarating and powerful production ever.
