Manoj Bajpayee: “We believe in and are passionate about Aiyaary”

Actor Manoj Bajpayee will be seen in Aiyaary, which revolves around two army officers, portrayed by Sidharth Malhotra as an army officer sharing a mentor-protégé bond with Bajpayee.

Directed by Neeraj Pandey, the film also stars Anupam Kher, Naseeruddin Shah, Rakul Preet Singh and Pooja Chopra in lead roles.

The award-winning actor spoke to BollySpice about his role in film, co-star Sidharth Malhotra and being on location in London.

What is Aiyaary all about?

It deals with the conflict of two generations. The ideas of patriotism between the two protagonists in the film keep on clashing. That takes the shape of a bigger conflict and a cat & mouse game of sorts. At the core of it, audiences will also experience how military personnel protect the country and national interest as well as the challenges they face. That makes quite a thrilling story.

It’s quite relevant as we see millennials

“Aiyaary is a film that must be seen by every Indian” – Subhash K Jha Review

Aiyaary

Starring Manoj Bajpai, Siddharth Malhotra, Naseeruddin Shah, Rakul Preet Singh

Written & Directed by Neeraj Pandey

At first Aiyaary seems less seamless than it actually is. Where is all this leading to? You wonder at the outset, as writer-director Neeraj Pandey sets up what eventually turns out to be pieces of a jigsaw that fits perfectly into the mindboggling zigzag of India’s political conditioning in contemporary times.

It is very hard to point out plot points inAiyaary that stand out to build the compelling construct on corruption in military forces. It seems miraculous that Siddharth Malhotra, playing an army renegade, is allowed to mouth dialogues that openly castigate the corrupt political system. Illegal arms-deal scams are not only whispered into the commodious plot. The narrative screams in wounded agony at the dizzying heights of corruption in the highest places.

This is no mean achievement.

Early in the narrative there

Here’s how Aiyaary makers tweaked the details about the Adarsh scam

Just a day ago, we had reported that Aiyaary features scenes and dialogues inspired from Adarsh scam. However, we now hear that the makers have tweaked the details of the Adarsh Society scam to play it safe. Apparently the society has been retitled Aashraya in the film. However they have retained references that indicate towards this scam. Pooja Chopra referring to it as Colaba Plot and Naseeruddin Shah talking about a scam that involved a building that was constructed for war wives still remain to be a part of the film.

When Neeraj called and texted him to meet for Aiyaary, the actor missed both. Recollecting the incident, he laughed, “I honestly thought it was some other friend of mine, and forgot about it. Not choosy, don't want to burnout by 50: Actor Madhavan on career choices

Cinema "An actor is defined by his life experiences and how convincingly he is portraying his characters on-screen and getting acceptance for his performance," he said. IANSImage source: actormaddy/Instagram By Arundhuti Banerjee From the crazy fun loving college boy Maddy in Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein to rubbing shoulders with the iconic Kamal Hassan in Anbe Sivam, from the business journalist Shyam Saxena in Guru to Manu of the Tanu Weds Manu series - R Madhavan has done it all and more. With his new web series Breathe, he says he is growing with each film and each experience of life. In a 20-year career, Madhavan has done very selective work, whether in the south Indian film industry or in Hindi cinema. What made him be so choosy about selecting projects? "An actor is defined by his life experiences and how convincingly he is portraying his characters on-screen and getting acceptance for his performance. When it comes to the acceptance of my performance from the audience, even though the films did not do well at the box office for a film like Ramji Londonwaley, my effort has always been appreciated. "That made me confident about my choices. I understood the fact that slowly but steadily, I am growing," Madhavan told Ians. "I have been working on my skills and that will continue. See, the world's biggest superstars earn the status of a superstar in their late 40s and 50s. If you ask me about me being choosy, I would say I am not. I just do not want to feel burnt out by the time I reach 50," said the actor, 47. "See, I cannot dance, I do not have a well-built body, neither do I have an adorable look that a superstar has. But yes, I am earning respect with my substantial work." The actor who calls himself "less than a superstar like Shah Rukh Khan" yet considers himself "moderately famous", has worked with some of the noted names like Mani Ratnam, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Nishikant Kamat, Rajkumar Hirani, Aanand L Rai, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Hassan and Naseeruddin Shah among others. According to Madhavan, working with these creative geniuses made him understand the craft much better. "More than directors, I have learnt a lot from the iconic actors that I have worked with. Since I come from a non-film background, I have no formal training in acting. Everything -- from camera angle to how much one should express on face, is based on the length of the shot... Everything (like this) I have learnt from these legends. I learnt on the job and from my life experience." Asked about the best lesson he learnt, he said: "That you have to bring some amount of realness to the character you play. It has to look like a real world, if not completely real world, it has to be a homogeneous world where every action would look real. If you watch a Lion King you believe in that world. When we watch Spiderman, we feel the real emotion of the character." So, now that the Amazon Prime web series Breathe is streaming and film offers are coming his way as usual, does he want to explore Bollywood more or focus on his career in the south? "I can explore both the cinema worlds. Why do I need to choose one? These days, whether in Tamil or Hindi cinema, both are growing with immense experimentation. So, I see no reason for choosing one over another," Madhavan said. (Arundhuti Banerjee can be contacted at arundhuti.b@ians.in)

Manoj’s character in the film is that of an army spy. It summarises what a soldier resorts to in extreme crisis. Further, it defines our film beautifully.”

Present at the trailer launch of Aiyaary in Mumbai earlier this week, Manoj, asked to share his experience of working with Neeraj Pandey with whom he has done films like Special 26 and Baby, praised his director, saying he was sick during shooting, “but still he kept the team together and kept the spirit really high all the time”.
