Ethan Coen’s Drive-Away Dolls certainly pulls from the aesthetic and narrative party bags of noir and road movies. It even indulges the pleasures of high lesbian camp as two friends are drawn into a government-connected conspiracy. But to call it pastiche, a term that could be handily affixed to any number of films by the Coen brothers, is inadequate here given the rollicking, casual, intimate nature of Drive-Away Dolls’s relationship to its generic forebearers. In the classic queer punk tradition of Bruce Labruce, John Waters, and Gregg Araki, Coen’s film knows when to pay homage and when to move to its own rhythm.
In its curious way, the film’s formulation of sameness and difference—conveyed through the way that it invokes everything from Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! to Kiss Me Deadly, as well as through the yin and yang of fuckgirl Jamie (Margaret Qualley) and the...

You start with a corpse. A murder has been committed — maybe it’s at a country estate, or on a train, or during a cruise headed to some exotic locale. If the victim is powerful, rich, and possibly hated for a variety of reasons, all the better. You need suspects, each with a motive for wanting said person six feet under. Lastly, and this is important: You’ve gotta have a sleuth. Preferably someone eccentric, with a quirk or a tic; bonus points if you can make the brainiac seem innocent or easily underestimated.

'Saint Joan': Constance Cummings as the George Bernard Shaw heroine. Constance Cummings on stage: From sex-change farce and Emma Bovary to Juliet and 'Saint Joan' (See previous post: “Constance Cummings: Frank Capra, Mae West and Columbia Lawsuit.”) In the mid-1930s, Constance Cummings landed the title roles in two of husband Benn W. Levy's stage adaptations: Levy and Hubert Griffith's Young Madame Conti (1936), starring Cummings as a demimondaine who falls in love with a villainous character. She ends up killing him – or does she? Adapted from Bruno Frank's German-language original, Young Madame Conti was presented on both sides of the Atlantic; on Broadway, it had a brief run in spring 1937 at the Music Box Theatre. Based on the Gustave Flaubert novel, the Theatre Guild-produced Madame Bovary (1937) was staged in late fall at Broadway's Broadhurst Theatre. Referring to the London production of Young Madame Conti, The...

The BBC's Sherlock has a legion of fans - but Sherlock Holmes has always been a cultural phenomenon...
After almost two years of waiting (which is almost as long as John Watson had to wait for the return of his supposedly dead best friend), the BBC chose to announce the series three premiere date for Sherlock... by driving a hearse around London during rush hour. Eschewing the traditional channels of interviews, Twitter, and the media, they chose to rely solely on the fans’ dedication to the show to find said car and spread the news.
It worked.
In fact, now that the third season of Sherlock has just passed, that’s probably old news, but it’s nevertheless telling of the hype that surrounds Sherlock. Fans turned up for the (albeit pre-announced) event, and the news went viral. For that kind of publicity, a...

Lord Peter Wimsey solved his first murder in 1923, made his debut on live television in 1947 and his television series debut on Masterpiece Theatre in 1972, and has just bounded into the 21st century in an Acorn Media DVD of that 1972-1975 television series starring Ian Carmichael. Dorothy L. Sayers wrote 11 novels and several short stories starring the First World War-wounded aristocrat, first class cricketer, and elegant pianist with lingering shell shock and a taste for cocktails. Sayers once described Lord Peter as a mixture of Fred Astaire and Bertie Wooster, the blissfully unaware protagonist of a series of comic novels who has to be guided through life by his butler, Jeeves. Although Wimsey calls himself “an ass” quite often, Bunter, his valvet, doesn’t need to point him in the right direction, although Bunter does save his life several times, including pulling him out of a bog in the first DVD episode,...

Hunger (Criterion) Harrowing true story of imprisoned Ira member Bobby Sands (Michael Fassbender) and his 1981 hunger strike protesting the British government’s refusal to recognize him, and other Ira members as political prisoners. Director Steve McQueen delivers the story with true filmmaking panache, mixing startling imagery that blends both stunning beauty and stomach-churning horror. Fassbender is absolutely brilliant in the lead. Not for the faint-of-heart, but not to be missed or, particularly, ignored. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Interviews with McQueen and Fassbender; Short documentary; 1981 episode of BBC series “Panorama” that covers the Ira hunger strike; Trailer. Widescreen. DTS-hd audio on Blu-ray.
Adam (20th Century Fox) Quirky romantic comedy about an eccentric, borderline Asperger’s Syndrome, astronomy buff (Hugh Dancy) who is drawn out of his self-imposed shell by a beautiful and sympathetic neighbor (Rose Byrne). Charming film with engaging performances by the two leads,...

Lifeline Theatre concludes its 26th anniversary MainStage season with the world premiere adaptation of Dorothy L. Sayers' "Busman's Honeymoon," adapted by Lifeline ensemble member Frances Limoncelli, and directed by Lifeline ensemble member Paul S. Holmquist. Wedding bells have finally rung for amateur sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey and novelist Harriet Vane. But their quiet, country honeymoon becomes a farce full of eccentric locals, exploding chimneys and even a body found in the wine cellar. This inauspicious beginning begs the question - when life gets in the way, can love persevere? Lifeline ensemble members Peter Greenberg and Jenifer Tyler reprise their roles as Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane in this sequel to "Gaudy Night," which premiered at Lifeline Theatre in 2006. The show runs about two and a half hours with one intermission, and copies of the book will be on sale in the lobby.
