He is the son of CVH Rao, a noted journalist and author of CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE MOVEMENTS IN INDIA & INDIA'S CASES FOR FREEDOM. At the time his father was working in pre-independence Lahore (located in present day Pakistan). He and BR Chopra were classmates in college and founded a film oriented journal there which was sold to finance their first film. Due to subsequent communal rights - the duo shifted to Bombay (Mumbai) later to continue producing films.

Passed away in 1995. Has 3 daughters.
Daughter Neeta married Vikram Gurbasani in 1989. He is the son of Pushpa and Girdhari Gurbasani.
