‘The Chi’ interviews: Jason Mitchell, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Yolonda Ross exclusive chats [Watch]
Trailblazing “Master of None” Emmy winner Lena Waithe created the Showtime ensemble drama “The Chi,” which examines life on the South Side of Chicago — like “The Wire” for the Midwest. Gold Derby recently spoke with the show’s stars Jason Mitchell, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, and Yolonda Ross about their work in the freshman series. Scroll down and click on their names below to be taken to their full interviews.

“We really wanted to put faces to some of these tragedies,” reveals Mitchell. He plays Brandon Johnson, an aspiring chef whose younger brother is killed in retaliation for a murder he didn’t commit. “So many people are losing family members. We really wanted to show how not only does it strip a family of something, but it also strips a neighborhood of something.” Mitchell is a two-time SAG Award nominee as a member of the ensemble casts of “Straight Outta Compton

Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (‘The Chi’): Why he was ‘terrified’ of playing a man from the South Side of Chicago [Exclusive Video Interview]
Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine was initially “terrified” of “The Chi” because “it wasn’t a world I was familiar with, so I wasn’t sure that I could actually portray it.” The son of immigrants, Mwine knew nothing about the South Side of Chicago in which the Lena Waithe-created series is set. “We have issues of authenticity,” he explains, “which has been a big debate about who has the right to tell what story.” So when he auditioned for the Showtime ensemble drama, he “was actually scared.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Mwine above.

Yolonda Ross (‘The Chi’) on the Lena Waithe series and the reputation of her hometown: ‘Chicago has gotten a bad rap’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Chicago native Yolonda Ross was excited to participate in “The Chi” because it presented her city “in a positive way.” Though crime happens everywhere, “Chicago really has gotten a bad rap,” so Ross was compelled by the way that creator Lena Waithe made “characters and situations personal, so that people could get how some of these things can actually happen.” This Showtime ensemble drama, also starring Jason Mitchell, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine and Sonja Sohn, examines life on the South Side of Chicago and ended its 10-episode first season in March. It will be back for a second season. Watch our exclusive video interview with Ross above.

Lena Waithe and Common On How They Hope ‘The Chi’ Will Generate Empathy for Black Families — Turn It On Podcast

Lena Waithe and Common On How They Hope ‘The Chi’ Will Generate Empathy for Black Families — Turn It On Podcast
Lena Waithe’s desire for how “The Chi” is received is heartbreaking. Quite simply, she hopes the show helps audience better see African Americans as human beings.

“As simple as concept as it is, it’s still something that people struggle with,” she told IndieWire’s Turn It On podcast. ” Black people are not 3/5ths human and we’re not all hooligans. Black boys aren’t born with a gun in their right hand and drugs in their left. They’re born with as much promise and hope as anybody else. ‘The Chi’ represents the humanity in us and the full breadth of who we are as a people. I hope people take that away from the show.”

IndieWire TV critic Ben Travers sat down recently with Waithe and fellow executive producer Common to discuss the show and how it came about. They began by discussing what inspired Waithe to create the show.

‘The Chi’ Review: Lena Waithe’s Compelling Showtime Drama Highlights the Beating Heart in Chicago’s South Side

‘The Chi’ Review: Lena Waithe’s Compelling Showtime Drama Highlights the Beating Heart in Chicago’s South Side
There are so much to discuss within “The Chi,” one could almost be forgiven for neglecting to mention its stellar soundtrack. The opening scene, for instance, is filled with key moments in the story and context about its city, but it’s also set to Chicago-local Chance the Rapper’s “All We Got” — a meaningful choice both in the rapper’s home and the song’s tone. It’s hopeful, rhythmic, and quickly gets its hooks into you, just like the show implementing it. There’s more going on than appears on-screen, which quickly becomes a common trait in Lena Waithe’s elegantly told and compellingly watchable Showtime drama.

Ostensibly a beautiful montage capturing the city’s South Side from morning to night, the first scene follows teenager Coogie (Jahking Guillory) as he rides his bike through the streets, stopping to shoot hoops, race a motorcyclist, and haggle for a

Trailer Watch: Jesus Is Watching in Lena Waithe’s “The Chi”

The Chi

Comprised mostly of snippets, the first trailer for “The Chi” doesn’t reveal much about the new Showtime series’ plot. We catch a peek of various characters and scenarios, ranging from a mom catching her teen son hiding a naked girl under his bed to a police officer breaking into a house and being greeted with a pointed gun. What the atmospheric spot makes clear is that the show will be both comedic and dramatic.

Deadline’s synopsis of the series helps shed some light on what exactly we’re getting a taste of. “Kevin (Alex R. Hibbert) is the pre-teen who must step past shattered illusions and embrace the normal rites of childhood, while Brandon (Jason Mitchell) the dreamer makes his own nearly impossible leap of faith to succeed in life and love with girlfriend Jerrika (Tiffany Boone).
