A former assistant of Nicolas Roeg's, Richmond seemed likely to emerge as a major figure in cinematography in the 1970s and 80s, but he developed a bad cocaine habit which helped break up his marriage to Jaclyn Smith and seemed likely to ruin his career at one point; he was able to throw off this dependency, fortunately.
