On New Year's Day, 1945, he and wife Susan Peters embarked on a duck hunting trip with Richard's cousin, Tom Quine, and his wife, in the Cuyamaca Mountains near San Diego. Susan accidentally dropped her .22-caliber rifle, and as she bent over to pick it up off the ground it went off. She was left paralyzed from the waist down. See more »
