Trivia (4)

French conductor, he studied the trumpet and composition at the Paris Conservatoire. Became music director at the Opéra-Comique in Paris until 1959. Prêtre was a favored conductor of Maria Callas. He was made an Officier of the Légion d'honneur in 1984 and is also an Italian Commendatore.
He was principal conductor of the Vienna Symphony between 1986 and 1991 and conducted the Vienna New Year's Concert in 2008 and 2010.
Has a son and a daughter.
He won the Victoire de la Musique Award for best conductor in 1997 and the Europa Prize in 1982.
