Broadchurch series 2: What worked and what didn't?

On its second go-around, Broadchurch has split viewers and critics - some were left underwhelmed by the new series of Chris Chibnall's coastal crime thriller, while others were still hooked every Monday night.

So why the divide? I'm of the opinion that Broadchurch 2 was neither an outright success or a complete misfire. Some elements (both old and new) worked, while others fell flat.

Here's my take on this series' pros and cons - join the conversation and share your own thoughts in the comments section.

What worked...

David Tennant and Olivia Colman

...and boy, did they work.

In both series, Tennant and Colman have been consistently terrific - from Hardy ambushing Miller in the ladies' loos in the premiere to the revisiting of their 'no hugging' policy in last night's finale.

But while series one's finale belonged to Colman, this year it was Tennant who utterly owned the series closer,

Broadchurch Olly is a bit of a dick, says actor Jonathan Bailey

Actor Jonathan Bailey has described his Broadchurch character Olly as "a bit of a dick".

Olly Stevens is Ellie Miller's nephew and a reporter for the Broadchurch Echo, working under Maggie Radcliffe.

"He's a bit of a dick, isn't he?" Bailey told Metro of Olly's character.

"He represents a generation where everything is immediate, whereas his boss is from the old school of journalism.

"It's funny because the actress who plays her, Carolyn Pickles, can do shorthand in real life, like you. It shows the real separation between the generations."

Asked if he was surprised that Olly had not moved to London at the end of the first series, Bailey replied: "Surprised - but delighted.

"It's good that people have been surprised at the direction Broadchurch has taken. That's what you want, to keep people guessing."

Lead stars Olivia Colman and David Tennant have claimed they have not been told

Looking back at Through The Dragon’s Eye

Follow us through the mural on a trip to Pelamar, to look back at BBC Look And Read fantasy adventure, Through The Dragon’s Eye…

If you attended a UK primary school in the last forty years, then the sight of two white, animated eyes on a black screen turning into the heart of the word ‘Look’ is likely to trigger all sorts of pink custard and plimsoll memories. Those moving eyes signalled the start of an adventure (albeit one delivered in twenty minute instalments designed to teach you about literacy, apostrophe usage and the joys of magic, magic E).

The first Look And Read television programme, Bob And Carol Look For Treasure was broadcast in 1967, a ten-part story about two children’s clue-filled search for swag and eventual capture of a thief. Each episode was divided in two by an educational section, the material for which - puzzles, songs and reading challenges,

'Broadchurch' will return for second series: Big reveal in ITV drama

The final twist in the Broadchurch finale was the confirmation that the ITV drama will have a second series.

Broadchurch producer Richard Stokes hinted to fans of the show that there would be a major twist at the end of the episode - and his comments referred to the written text "Broadchurch will return", which appeared on screen after the end credits.

The murder case in the eight-part drama, which centred on the murder of schoolboy Danny Latimer, was all resolved by the end of the episode. The detectives in the case DS Miller (Olivia Colman) and Di Hardy (David Tennant) appeared to have retired from policework, so it's not clear which actors will be involved in the second run.

Broadchurch has been an overwhelming ratings hit for ITV, winning critical acclaim and generating huge publicity around the whodunnit mystery.

The show's writer Chris Chibnall said on Twitter this evening:

'Broadchurch' episode seven blog: Who killed Danny Latimer?

"We're nearly there, Miller…"

It's the penultimate episode of Broadchurch and with just one week to go until Danny's killer is revealed, one major suspect was ruled out, while an eye-witness account appeared to spell trouble for another...

Digital Spy has picked apart episode seven to see if there were any hidden clues.

Clues and Suspects

Last week, David Tennant's Alec Hardy took a turn for the worse and ends up hospitalised with a heart arrhythmia. Alec's need to redeem himself threatens to push him over the edge - will Broadchurch end with the grouchy Di's death?

Soon, jolly newspaper ed Maggie (Carolyn Pickles) and infuriating twazzock Olly (Jonathan Bailey) get wind of Hardy's poor health and he's forced to give the news hounds an exclusive - precisely what happened back at Sandbrook.

Hardy took the blame (so he claims) when a vital piece of evidence was stolen from

'Broadchurch' episode six blog: Who killed Danny Latimer?

With the investigation into Danny Latimer's death rumbling on, Hardy and Miller's troubled investigation caught a few breaks this week on Broadchurch - with two suspects looming particularly large - but Alec's deteriorating health may have also seen the killer slip through the police's collective fingers...

Digital Spy has picked apart episode six to see if there were any hidden clues.

Clues and Suspects

Jack Marshall's death has seen Hardy (David Tennant) labelled the Worst Cop in Britain - it's not an entirely undeserved moniker given that he's yet to press Mark Latimer (Andrew Buchan) on the gaps in his alibi or noted young Tom Miller's (Adam Wilson) shifty behaviour...

With little progress made in catching Danny's killer, the coppers are threatened with cutbacks and their one remaining lead seems to be a burnt-out boat found floating in the ocean - one of many clues pointing to a new chief suspect.
