Since its start 50 years ago, the National Association of Television Program Executives (Natpe) has attracted seemingly every player from the traditional entertainment world. Countless television programs have been pitched and countless deals have been struck at the conference. But a new conversation has emerged at the annual event, one that's focused on digital entertainment. According to Natpe CEO Rod Perth, a large representation of digital companies is one reason Natpe’s attendance is “significantly” above last year’s 5,000 mark. We were one of those digital companies attending for the first time. After three days of Miami heat, here are my four takeaways on the fresh digital side of Natpe. 1. The playing field is open for breakthrough digital advertising This may be old news for most of us, but for a conference that originally established itself as a marketplace for linear, traditional programming, it’s a significant revelation. When appointed president/CEO of Natpe in May 2012, Rod Perth brought along extensive experience in local and national television, as both producer and executive. He managed a local TV station, held executive positions at CBS, USA Network, Reelz Channel and elsewhere. In those capacities, he regularly attended Natpe and served on the board, but nothing could prepare him for the disruptive changes in how content is created, marketed and distributed today. As he prepares to preside over his second Natpe, which begins a three day run Monday in Miami Beach, Perth predicts there will be a record number of sellers,

Forty-four percent of the registered buyers are international, representing 46 different countries, and 28 station groups are participating this time, Perth said on a conference call with the press. At last count, there were 225 exhibitors — 34 of them attending Natpe for the first time, and five returning in January after years of absence, said Perth, who is in his second year at Natpe. For the second year in a row, each of the major studios will be at Natpe. Exhibitors, meanwhile, come from 23 different countries, including increased participation from the UK, France, Spain and Germany, he said. Oscar and Emmy-winning director/producer James L. Brooks...

Budapest – The numbers were good, the weather was bad and the reactions to this year's Natpe Budapest were decidedly mixed. 157 exhibitors and more 400 buyers made the trip this week to the TV trade fair focused on Central and Eastern Europe, up slightly from 2012, but economic uncertainty in the region and a rapidly changing marketplace mean the future of the business here remains cloudy. ReelzChannel unspools in fall
The movie-themed channel formerly known as Moviewatch now has an official launch date of Sept. 27 after securing carriage deals that extend its reach to 28 million subscribers. The network, which is being renamed ReelzChannel, was announced by Minnesota-based Hubbard Broadcasting in October 2000, but the launch was delayed because, executives said, they wanted to make sure they had enough distribution to make it appealing to advertisers. The channel now has carriage deals in place with DirecTV, Dish Network, Time Warner Cable, Comcast Corp., Charter Communications, Insight Communications and Mediacom, said Rod Perth, president of television, and Stanley Hubbard, CEO of Hubbard Media Group, a subsidiary of Hubbard Broadcasting, which is financing the channel.
