Disney announced plans to release “Descendants 3” in the summer of 2019.

The news was announced by Dove Cameron, who plays Mal in “Descendants,” in a special piece of programming that aired during Disney Channel’s “Zombies” on Friday. In the piece, Cameron alluded to a new villain (Mal’s father) entering the story.

‘Descendants 2’ Rises to 21 Million Viewers in Delayed Viewing

Disney’s original TV movie “Descendants 2” has risen to 21 million viewers in delayed viewing, according to Nielsen data.

On a Live+3 basis, the sequel rose from 13 million viewers from its original airing on July 21, airing simultaneously on ABC, Disney Channel, Disney Xd, Freeform, Lifetime and Lifetime Movies.

The movie also bested two years of cable TV ratings set by the original “Descendants” in 2015. The sequel ranked as the number one cable TV telecast among all major youth demographics: kids 2-11 (3.9 million/10.0 rating), kids 6-11 (3.1 million/12.8 rating), tweens 9-14 (2.8 million/11.7 rating), and kids 6-14 (4.2 million/11.6 rating).

The Disney Channel movie “Descendants 2” pulled in 13 million viewers across six networks on Friday night, according to Nielsen data.

The sequel, which follows the teenage children of infamous Disney villains, aired on Disney Channel, ABC, Disney Xd, Freeform, Lifetime and Lifetime Movies. Its telecast on Disney Channel was Friday’s number one scripted TV telecast in total viewers with 5.3 million.

When Sara Parriott and Josann McGibbon first teamed up 32 years ago, the door had just started to crack open for female film writers.

“We came at the right time, it was right when women writers were coming into vogue,” McGibbon said. “It was the time of ‘Thelma and Louise’ and there was two of us — a blonde and a brunette and it all fell into place.”

Descendants 2” — the sequel to the hit Disney Channel Original Movie “Descendants” — is getting a massive boost for its summer premiere with a simultaneous debut across five different networks in Disney/ABC Television Group, including a primetime broadcast slot.

Disney Channel Sets "Descendants" Sequel

The Disney Channel Original Movie "The Descendants" is set to get a sequel.

In an announcement today by Disney Channels Worldwide Cco Gary Marsh, the company confirmed that "Descendants 2" will begin production this summer for a 2017 premiere.

Kenny Ortega will return as director, executive producer and choreographer on the sequel which will continue the story of the teenage sons and daughters of Disney’s most infamous villains.

The first film was the No. 1 cable television movie of 2015 and the fifth highest-rated original movie ever on U.S. cable TV in total viewers.

All the key cast will return, with China Anne McClain joining the cast as Uma, the daughter of Ursula. Casting will be announced soon for new characters including the progeny of villains Captain Hook and Gaston.

Sara Parriott and Josann McGibbon penned the script with several key crew members from the first are also returning.

With the Academy Awards fast approaching, the Writers Guild of America handed out its 2016 honours last night, with Spotlight claiming the WGA Award for Best Original Screenplay, and The Big Short received the award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Alex Gibney’s Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief was award Best Documentary Screenplay, while on the TV side of things there were successes for Mad Men (Drama Series), Veep (Comedy Series), Mr. Robot (New Series), Better Call Saul (Episodic Drama) and Silicon Valley (Episodic Comedy).

Nominations For The 68th Annual Writers Guild Of America Awards

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.

Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths

Here Are the 2015 WGA Awards TV Nominations

The Writers Guild of America announced some of its nominees for its 2015 awards on Thursday, including television, new media, and radio, and among the TV nominees are series both new and old, and all beloved.

In the comedy series category, freshman Netflix show "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" scored a nomination for best series, as well as an overall best new series nod. "The Last Man on Earth" also landed in that latter category, and was singled out for its pilot episode writing, too.

On the drama side of the equation, lauded "Breaking Bad" spinoff "Better Call Saul" also got best series and best new series nominations, in addition to a an episode writing nod. Newly-minted Emmy winner "Game of Thrones" also scored a best drama citation, as well as an episodic writing nomination.

Nick Fink ("Glee"), Katie Chang ("Bling Ring"), Brandon Mychal Smith ("You're the Worst"), Eliza Bennett ("Nanny McPhee") and Taylor Dearden ("Breaking Bad") are set to star in MTV's new dark half-hour comedy pilot "Little Darlings".

Heavy DVR playback has boosted viewership for the premiere of Disney Channel’s original movie “Descendants,” which is the fourth most-watched cable TV movie since 2007.

In Nielsen’s “live plus-3″ estimates, which includes time-shifted viewing done Saturday, Sunday and Monday, “Descendants” saw its average audience increase by 61% from its same-night average to 10.54 million viewers. It also surged by 74% among kids 2-11 (5.2 million), by 73% among kids 6-11 (4.2 million) and by 64% among tweens 9-14 (3.8 million). On the Watch Disney Channel app, “Descendants” has also posted 1.8 million video views since July 24.

Disney Channel’s junior-villians telepic “Descendants” cast a spell on 6.6 million viewers Friday night, according to preliminary Nielsen estimates.

The big audience for the musical, which chronicles how the children of four classic Disney villains came to choose good over evil, puts it ahead of the network’s “Teen Beach Movie” sequel from June and makes it the year’s most-watched cable TV movie. “Descendants” also ranks No. 1 among all 2015 cable telecasts in kids 2-11 (3 million) and tweens 9-14 (2.3 million).

Disney Channel next week is expected to release additional ratings information, including how “Descendants” fared vs. the Friday competition as well as its viewership in “live plus-3″ estimates from Nielsen.
