He is best known for directing the Brazilian critical and financial successes Elite Squad and Elite Squad: The Enemy Within and the 2014 remake of RoboCop. He has won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival for Elite Squad in 2008. He is also the producer and director of the Netflix original series Narcos, starring frequent collaborator Wagner Moura.

Was considered to direct The Wolverine (2013).
In 2018, was accused all over the internet of intellectual misguidance for attributing a nationally known sentence to be credited to Romero Jucá, to another character in "O Mecanismo". The sentence was from a secret recording emerged of minister Jucá, who was under investigation in the multi billion-dollar kickback scheme at state oil company Petrobras, discussing a purported pact to stall a huge corruption probe that has engulfed much of the nation.
