The 19th Nippon Connection announces its first highlights

From May 28 to June 2, 2019 the nineteenth edition of the Nippon Connection Film Festival will take place in Frankfurt am Main. As the biggest festival for Japanese cinema worldwide, it offers an exciting insight into the current state of the Japanese film scene with more than 100 short and feature length films from all genres. Numerous filmmakers and artists from Japan will be present to introduce their works and establish a lively exchange with the German audience. A diverse cultural program including workshops, lectures, and concerts gives visitors the chance to explore the multifaceted culture of Japan. The main venues are at the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm and the Theater Willy Praml in der Naxoshalle.

Love is certainly in the air this week, especially with our horror and sci-fi home releases, as we have plenty of tainted love on tap for those of you who tend to enjoy the darker side of romance. Film Review: Bodyguard Kiba (1993) by Takashi Miike

Based on a manga from Ikki Kajiwara, Miike teams up with Ikki’s brother, Hisao Maki to write the screenplay. After “The Human Murder Weapon” (1992), this was their second project, followed up by many more cooperations like “Family” (2001) and “Waru” (2006).

This is one of Miike’s earlier works that went straight to VHS. The very basic yakuza story evolves around Naoko Kiba, who protects a thug called Junpei who stole 500 Million Yen from an Okinawa gang.

Although “Bodyguard Kiba” was produced pretty much at the beginning of his career, the movie shows the typical Miike handwriting: Set in a brutal yakuza world, straightforward story, sex, and a criminal hero. Besides, most of the story takes place in Okinawa and a lot of dialogue is spoken in the local accent. Considered by many Takeshi Kitano’s magnum opus, “Fireworks” is also his most critically acclaimed work, as it netted him the Golden Lion in Venice Film Festival and a plethora of other awards, both in Japan and all around the world, despite the fact that the Japanese Academy chose to ignore him again, solely awarding Joe Hisaishi for Best Musical Score, among 10 other nominations. Trailer for Upcoming Japanese Film “Kyoukaishi”

Director Dai Sako (“Running on Empty” “Still Paradise”) has completed production on his recent film “Kyoukaishi”. The film marks the last performance of iconic actor Ren Osugi (“Shin Godzilla” “Fireworks” “AuditionCure“), who passed away shortly after production was completed. This is also the famous actors first produced film.

A trailer for the film has been released, the film is set to come out in October of 2018.

Synopsis

Saeki (Ren Osugi) works with death-row convicts as a prison chaplain. He tries to instill the prisoners with a sense of morality and help them become a better person. He is a good communicator with the death-row convicts assigned to solitary cells. Saeki agonizes over whether his words really touches the prisoners and whether he is doing the right thing. Film Review: Godzilla Resurgence (2016) by Hideaki Anno, Shinji Higuchi

The third reboot of one of Japan’s most famous and successful franchises, and the 31st installment in the series was meant to be one of the greatest. Allocating a rather large budget (Us$15 million) and tasking Hideaki Ano, director of “Evangelion” and Shinji Higuchi, director of “Sinking in Japan, and special effects director of “Gamera”, and one of the top special effects supervisors in Japan, with the film’s direction, it was evident that Toho was not about to leave anything on chance. The result was hugely successful, since “Shin Godzilla” was the highest-grossing live-action Japanese film of 2016 and is the highest-grossing Japanese-produced Godzilla film. Takeshi Kitano Returns in First Teaser for Threequel ‘Outrage 0: Coda’

The third installment of the action-packed Outrage saga has just been given its first teaser. Although the footage is very brief, it does provide clues for what adventure lies ahead for star Takeshi Kitano, in a project which should hopefully give him more to do than Ghost in the Shell.

For those unfamiliar with the Outrage films, they follow underground organized crime in Japan, and center on Kitano’s character Otomo. From what’s been revealed by the teaser, Otomo is back with a vengeance as we see an assortment of yakuza-related activity.

Japan Cuts Hits Its 10th Anniversary: Runs July 14-24 With New Repertory Series And Two New Sion Sono Films
