Ellen Page

Ellen Page
After her breakthough role in Juno, Ellen Page unexpectedly found herself on the Hollywood A-list. But she still prefers smaller, tougher movies – and speaking her mind

The day before Ellen Page and I meet up in Los Angeles, Barack Obama's administration makes a long overdue announcement: it will finally allow Plan B, a morning-after pill, to be made available to girls and women without a prescription. This move is, the New York Times reports with some understatement, "fraught with political repercussions for Obama".

This will sound absurd to most people who live in Britain, where the morning-after pill has been available without a prescription for over a decade. But in America, where certain politicians have about as much understanding of the realities of women's biology and contraceptive needs as a dung beetle, the issue of how much control a woman is allowed to have over her own body remains anachronistically fraught.

Odds Are, Your Partner Is Cheating On You.. With Netflix

Forget the milkman. Your significant other is more likely to be cheating on you with Netflix.

A recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Netflix found that 51 percent of those in relationships are likely to cheat on each other... by watching TV shows on Netflix alone that they promised to watch with their partners. Over 28 million Americans have already done it.

The study shows that people are pretty good at keeping secrets. Only 14 percent of cheaters feel guilty enough to confess, while 32 percent re-watch the episodes without speaking up. People are sneaky! If you can keep it quiet that you watched the season finale of "Mad Men" without your beau, what else are you hiding? Twelve percent of people even admit to re-watching the episodes and faking their emotional reactions so they don't get caught. Wow.

In March, New York magazine's Maureen O'Connor wrote a story about cheating on her boyfriend with Netflix.

'Beyonce Is Not A Role Model'

'Beyonce Is Not A Role Model'
Not everyone is happy to "bow down" to Beyonce.

Last week, Rakhi Kumar wrote an open letter to Michelle Obama explaining why she doesn't consider Beyonce a good role model for young women. Kumar's concerns revolve around the singer's sexualized clothing and the focus on her body in her music and performance, which she believes sends the wrong message to girls about attaining success. Kumar wrote to Obama in light of reports that the First Lady considers Beyonce a good role model for her own daughters.

"It's time that young girls were sent a different message," Kumar wrote. "A more refined, intelligent message. A message that engaged them at the level of their intellect and potential because implicit in our message to them should be the acknowledgement that they are naturally brilliant and that we believe that they are capable of everything - without ever having to undress to achieve their success.

Mayor lost $1 billion? San Diego's Maureen O'Connor blames brain tumor for gambling addiction

  • Pop2it
Maureen O'Connor, the former mayor of San Diego admits to stealing more than $2 million from her late husband's charity foundation to feed a gambling addiction she says is caused by a brain tuner.

O'Connor says she always planned to pay the money back, and it appears the U.S. Justice Department is going to give her the opportunity. ABC News reports the 66-year-old struck a deal that allows the former mayor to plead not guilty to money laundering in federal court. She will have two years to repay the stolen funds and undergo gambling addiction treatment.

In 2011, O'Connor was diagnosed with a tumor her attorney says affected the area of the brain "that controls logic and reasoning and, most important, judgment." She since had the tumor removed. "There are two Maureens -- Maureen No. 1 and Maureen No. 2," O'Connor tells reporters. "Maureen No. 2 is the Maureen who did not know she

Hollywood Hills head update: Pics now on offer

  • Pop2it
Remember that severed head in a bag found near the Hollywood sign on Wednesday (Jan. 18)? Well, as it turns out one of the two women who found it had her picture taken next to the gruesome package and, according to a Gawker report, she's even smiling in the picture.

And, because this story hasn't hit rock bottom yet, we're sorry to add that "a prominent Hollywood photo agency" is shopping the pictures around. The asking price: $5,000.

Gawker's Maureen O'Connor writes that she received an e-mail from the photo agency offering eight photos, "including a pic of the lady whose dog found the head (and she's smiling)." O'Connor declined and a survey she did of other publications turned up zero interested parties.

Lauren Kornberg, the dog walker who found the head when two of the dogs she was walking started playing with a mysterious bagged object, says she at first thought it was a Hollywood prop.

Howard Kurtz Chides Gawker Reporter For Saying ‘D*ck’ Live On CNN

On CNN's Reliable Sources, the discussion over Democratic Congressman Anthony Weiner's Twitter photo was front and center. The most startling part of the conversation came however when host Howard Kurtz asked Gawker reporter Maureen O'Connor whether her site has "a big advantage covering this story in a way the mainstream media can't, starting with the language that you can use," which strangely predicted what was about to come next.

Will Miley Pic Land Perez in Jail?

The Internet is up in arms over Perez Hilton’s ill-advised tweeting of a Miley Cyrus upskirt photo. The latest: Many seem to think the image was Photoshopped, including Maureen O'Connor, who points to the video shoot the photo was taken from—and notes on Gawker that “in every other photograph she appears to have panties on.” Even if he did Photoshop the image, he could still be in deep doo-doo. An attorney who specializes in child porn cases tells Salon it was “suicidal for him to do this,” and adds that even the most obviously-doctored images (say, a child’s face...

Lindsay Lohan Sues E*Trade: That Baby Is Mocking Me!

Lindsay Lohan is apparently famous enough to be known by her first name alone…and she wants $100 million from E*Trade, which dared to use that name without her permission. The “milkaholic” baby featured in the above ad was named after “someone on the account team,” a rep insists, but LiLo’s lawyer pooh-poohs that idea: They’re using Lindsay’s name “as a parody of her life. This is a subliminal message,” she tells the New York Post . “Everybody's talking about it and saying it's Lindsay Lohan,” the lawyer continues, although Gawker writer Maureen O'Connor notes, “Though it is my job to read...

We’re all very excited that Kate Gosselin will be back in our lives on a weekly basis thanks to Dancing With the Stars —but who else is joining her, and what do all these people have in common? Fellow contestants for season 10 are mostly “public figures improving their images,” and they’re all doing the show for one reason: “It's one of the few places in television where film editors still try to make their subjects likable instead of loathsome,” writes Maureen O'Connor on Gawker . The lineup: Pamela Anderson : The former Baywatch babe is overdue for a comeback. Shannen Doherty...

'Prehab': The New Rehab

Charlie Sheen may not realize it yet, but as soon as he checked into rehab as a “ preventative measure ,” he became part of the latest, greatest celebrity trend: prehab. Maureen O'Connor details four reasons this is sure to become the next big thing, on Gawker : Career bump, yes; rock bottom, no: “Sometimes you just want the sympathy and attention without first being reduced to sucking dick to score crack rocks, y'know?” Avoid that pesky “admitting you have a problem” step: Deep down you probably realize that starting your morning with several screwdrivers isn't healthy. But if you’re still in the...

Natalie Cole will be hard-pressed to live through a more unforgettable experience.
