Film Review: ‘Wetlands’

Film Review: ‘Wetlands’
Hard-boiled meets undercooked to indigestible results in the heavy-handed “Wetlands.” This soggy stab at neo-noir finds Italian-born writer-director Emanuele Della Valle out of his element in a pretentious meller set on the Jersey shore. The various conflicts he’s concocted are neither psychologically convincing nor sufficiently ironical in genre terms to avoid a pervasive sense of cultural disconnect.

An indie piece of festival fodder that’s strangely devoid of much exposure at festivals — presumably it got turned down by the premiere outlets — this grab-bag of phony angst is being opened by Abramorama on U.S. screens Sept. 15. It won’t linger there long, but a speedy transition to home formats is unlikely to find it much more welcome there.

Perpetually grim Babel “Babs” Johnson (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) — first glimpsed in a flash-forward of high histrionic distress — is an odd fit in his new post as ranger in parklands outside Atlantic City. But then,

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje in First Trailer for Crime Drama 'Wetlands'

"Keep to yourself, mind your own business, because this is the last stop for you." A trailer has arrived for an indie crime drama titled Wetlands (not to be confused with the German sex comedy of the same name), which is hitting theaters in a few weeks. From first-time director Emanuele Della Valle, this stars Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (from Get Rich or Die Tryin', G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, Thor: The Dark World, Trumbo, Suicide Squad) as a top cop from Philly who finds himself working in a precinct in the Wetlands, the no-man's land surrounding Atlantic City, New Jersey. There he mixes with locals before the infamous hurricane arrives and threatens to destroy lives. The full cast includes Heather Graham, Jennifer Ehle, Anthony Mackie, Christopher McDonald, Rob Morgan, Lauren Lavera, Sean Ringgold, Louis Mustillo, Tyler Elliot Burke, Pamela Dunlap, and Barry Markowitz. This looks solid, but not sure. Take a look.

Mike & Molly: Season Six Ratings

Fans don't have to worry about Mike & Molly being cancelled this time around because it's already been announced that there won't be a seventh season. Will the ratings for the final 13 episodes be high enough for the CBS execs to regret their decision to cancel the show or, will the numbers confirm they made the right choice? Stay tuned.

Mike & Molly revolves around Molly (Melissa McCarthy) and Mike (Billy Gardell), a couple that met at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting, fell in love, and later married. The rest of the cast includes Reno Wilson, Katy Mixon, Nyambi Nyambi, Rondi Reed, Cleo King, Louis Mustillo, David Anthony Higgins, and Swoosie Kurtz.

The higher a show's ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better its chances for survival. New ratings data will be added as it becomes available -- typically around 11:30am Est/8:30am Pst. Refresh to

You can watch a full production of 'Sticks and Stones' online now

  • Hitfix
It is not often that I get to offer you something special of my own here at HitFix. That's not to say I am not personally invested in my writing here. Of course I am. I think over the last five or six years, I've turned a corner in terms of my own understanding of what film criticism can be, and for me, it works on a very personal level. But when it comes to my creative work, there's not a lot of it that I've been able to share in a finished form. I could publish my scripts, I suppose, as long as my co-writer Scott Swan agreed, but a script is a suggestion of what a movie will eventually be, not the movie itself. When I wrote about my quarter-century here in La, I wrote about the production of our play, "Sticks and Stones," at the Met Theater in La.

25 Years In La Part 2: 'Shawshank,' 'Sleepwalkers,' and 'Sticks and Stones'

  • Hitfix
Yesterday, I wrote about my first year in Los Angeles, which was all just a matter of settling in. Remember, when I moved to La, I knew a grand total of zero people who lived or worked here. I was not laden with contacts and strolling into a situation where everything was guaranteed to work out. Scott Swan and I took a huge chance when we packed up and moved out, and I am so horrified by how little money we had saved that I'm almost embarrassed to say the number. I was insanely naive when I arrived in town. I am still haunted by a choice we made in those early days, when we answered an ad in one of the trades that was looking for writers willing to work on a "per sketch" basis. I forget how much the rate was… $100 or so, but definitely not more than that…

Mike & Molly: Season Five Ratings

Last season, the ratings for Mike & Molly dropped once again but the sitcom was renewed anyway -- likely in part to give the series enough episodes for a syndication package. Will the numbers improve this time around? Cancelled or renewed for a sixth season on CBS?

‘Mike & Molly’ Last-Minute Holiday Episode Is a Christmas Miracle (Exclusive Video)
Monday’s “Mike & Molly” Christmas episode was definitely the result of a team effort on the part of the CBS comedy’s cast and producers.

The show, which just premiered its fifth season earlier this month, hadn’t originally planned a holiday episode. But, after the network finalized the show’s air dates, everyone realized the show had an episode airing really close to Christmas. So, star Reno Wilson — who plays Mike’s (Billy Gardell) police partner, Carl — leaped into action, show representatives told TheWrap.

'Mike & Molly' Season 3 finale recap: Disaster delayed a forgettable finish

The "Mike & Molly" Season 3 finale may have aired a little later than expected, but CBS gave it a "Big Bang Theory"-assisted scheduling boost to ensure maximum viewership.

The episode saw Mike (Billy Gardell) dealing with the aftermath of his mother, Peggy (Rondi Reed), breaking up with his boss, Captain Murphy (Gerald McRaney), as a tornado headed for Chicago. With disaster looming, Mike revealed to Molly (Melissa McCarthy) that he secretly went into business with stepfather-in-law Vince (Louis Mustillo) in case they needed extra money for in vitro fertilization treatments. Of course that didn't turn out very well: the ostriches Mike and Vince bought wound up getting loose in the storm. And Murphy showed up at Peggy's door to declare they're not over yet.

Otherwise it was a rather quiet finale, with no major cliffhanger or standout event to keep fans buzzing during what will be an unusually extended hiatus.
