Trivia (7)

She is considered as the first nude star, in that her roles in Inspiration (1915) and Purity (1916) both had her performing nude scenes as a leading lady. She was also nude in The Girl o' Dreams (1918) and Heedless Moths (1921).
She was a top artist's model in the early 1900s.
She is a distant relative of actor, James Martin Kelly.
A model in the early 20th century, she was the first person to appear nude in a feature film, Inspiration (1915). She had a promising career as a model and budding film actress when she was in her early 20s, but her career was destroyed by a murder scandal of which she was involuntarily a part but in which she shared no guilt. Abandoned and forgotten by her family, she spent the last 60 of her 105 years in a mental institution.
She was committed to the Ogdensburg Psychiatric Institution for depression and schizophrenia - generally treatable mental disorders, today. She was abandoned and forgotten there for decades until a niece discovered her there.
In 2009, playwright and actress Elaine Kuracina wrote and starred in a play about Munson's life at the State University of New York at Potsdam, about thirty miles from Ogdensburg.
The producers of Heedless Moths (1921) cast Jane Thomas to play Audrey in the emotional scenes, since they felt there was a resemblance. Audrey was also in the film doing nude scenes in long shots.

Personal Quotes (3)

What becomes of the artists' models? I am wondering if many of my readers have not stood before a masterpiece of lovely sculpture or a remarkable painting of a young girl, her very abandonment of draperies accentuating rather than diminishing her modesty and purity, and asked themselves the question, 'Where is she now, this model who was so beautiful?'
I detest false modesty. For my part I see nothing shocking in our unclothed bodies.
[Her reaction when lookalike Jane Thomas was cast to play her in the acting scenes in Heedless Moths (1921)] I found out I was to be a star in name only. Some scenes were shot in which I posed. Another girl took my place and acted the scenes for which I had been engaged, and I was told she resembled me in the days when I first began posing.
