Technicolor is taking a big step toward expansion into animation and games with the hiring of animation and games veteran Rick Mischel.
He comes on board in the newly created position of executive vp animation and interactive services at Technicolor Content Services.
Mischel's hire formalizes an animation and interactive services business unit at Technicolor, which combines its Burbank-based games division; a growing animation division also located in Burbank; and its Bangalore, India-based Paprikaas Studio. Technicolor's animation business in India is located at Paprikaas, and Technicolor recently entered into a strategic alliance with DreamWorks Animation to build an animation facility there.
The combined businesses produce art and animation for the games, television and DVD feature markets. They also provide audio, versioning and related services for games and animation.
Mischel said he is exploring the potential of offering theatrical feature animation.
"I am thrilled to help build this new business around Technicolor's well-earned reputation for quality and dependability in all its client services," he said. "We're focused on building a seamless pipeline (between the facilities). Additionally, one of my objectives is to look at Technicolor's existing facilities and access talent and resources in those places for game production and animation."
Mischel was the founder and president of Reach Games and the CEO of Mainframe Entertainment, a leading creator of computer-generated animation. Before Mainframe, he was president and Coo of Harvey Entertainment, the company behind Casper the Friendly Ghost, Richie Rich and other cartoon characters.
"With his background in both production and project development, Rick provides a wonderful balance between his leadership and creative skills covering the broad spectrum of our animation and interactive services businesses," Tcs president Ahmad Ouri said.
