Backpackers, Seed: TV Shows Cancelled by The CW

It's game over for The CW's new comedies Seed and Backpackers. The smallest network has cancelled and pulled the low-rated comedies after just two airings.

On Seed, a single bartender and sperm donor (Adam Korson) meets offspring that he never knew he had and becomes involved in their lives. The rest of the cast includes Carrie-Lynn Neales, Amanda Brugel, Stephanie Anne Mills, Laura De Carteret, Matt Baram, Vanessa Matsui, Abby Ross, and William Ainscough.

Backpackers follows Brandon (Dillon Casey) and Ryan (Noah Reid) as they travel through Europe looking for Ryan's girlfriend girlfriend Beth (Meghan Heffern). Giacomo Gianniotti plays Andrew, Brandon's slacker brother.

Both shows had dismal launches last week, attracting fewer than 600,000 viewers each. The numbers got even worse this week. Based on the fast affiliate ratings, Backpackers dropped 40% and Seed fell 20%.

TV Review: ‘Seed’

TV Review: ‘Seed’
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: A skirt-chasing Peter Pan type discovers he’s a father several times over thanks to sperm donations. Yes, that’s the gist of “Seed,” a CW summer comedy that’s essentially the illegitimate Canadian child of “About a Boy” and the Vince Vaughn movie “Delivery Man,” plus, oh, the DNA from about a dozen others. Networks can be cut some slack as they cast about for inexpensive programming, and while the show is cheery enough, it’s still pretty tempting to throw out this baby with the bathwater.

Harry (Adam Korson) is working at a bar – and dealing with a lady who doesn’t know when to leave – when 9-year-old Billy (William Ainscough) shows up at his doorstep, informing him that he’s his bio dad. This act of curiosity is not well received by Billy’s two moms (Stephanie Anne Mills,

Teddy Pendergrass: A Look Back At His Career

Here are some of the highlights from the R&B legend's nearly 40 years in the music business.

By Neil Gladstone

Teddy Pendergrass, the 59-year-old Philadelphia soul legend who died on January 13 from complications due to colon cancer surgery, may be best remembered for a few things: gravelly ballads delivered sweat-drenched and bare-chested, quiet-storm mainstays such as "If You Don't Know Me by Now" and "Close the Door" and a 1982 accident in his Rolls Royce that left him paralyzed from the waist down.

After that life-changing moment, he went through a gauntlet of surgeries and wrenched his way back to the recording studio (1984's Love Language) and the stage (notably a Live Aid in 1985 and later in a late-'90s production of "Your Arms Too Short to Box With God.") But he had many other memorable moments.

CBC won't be left out in cold during Olympics

CBC won't be left out in cold during Olympics
Not to be outdone by the 2010 Vancouver/Whistler Olympic Games on rival CTV, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. is set to roll out winter sports-themed TV programming.

The Canadian pubcaster has ordered a sitcom pilot from E1 Television and Serendipity Point Films based on the popular Canadian curling movie "Men With Brooms," the directorial debut for actor Paul Gross ("Due South").

The 2002 homegrown comedy starred Gross, Leslie Nielsen and Molly Parker as part of a curling team reuniting to capture the national trophy. Gross will share executive producer credits on the CBC pilot and co-star, while Paul Mather ("Corner Gas") will pen the script about four regular joes hanging out at the local curling rink.

"Curling is something everyone in Canada is familiar with, a strange sport in quirky rinks where people can come and go and tell different stories," Mather said of the sitcom's premise.

Kirstine Stewart, general manager of CBC Television,

Earth Daze Revisited

Crusty eco-hippies spin random anecdotes about olden times in "Earth Days," a turgid documentary on the environmental movement in the 1960s and '70s.

The movie, which grandly introduces authors and activists such as hippie astronaut Rusty Schweickart and the guy who wrote The Whole Earth Catalog, mingles campy footage of

Eisenhower-era wonderment with doom-laden futurism and images of hippies beating up an innocent car with sledgehammers at 1970's first Earth Day.

This bongs-and-bongos gang's preposterously sour outlook -- "The Population Bomb" author Paul R. Ehrlich is shown, circa 1970, predicting that "some time in the next 15 years the
