In Hollywood, for every Twilight films, there are at least two films which tackle touchy issues. While Jonathan Demme's Philadelphia is a little bit cheesy at times, the film is still relevant today as it was when it came out.
Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks), a former lawyer, got fired from his firm because he's a homosexual with AIDS. His boss, Charles Wheeler (Jason Robards), said he fired Beckett because a file was only found at the last minute before going to court. Beckett, on the other hand, believes his condition led his boss to show him the door.
Andrew ask for representation from Joe Miller (Denzel Washington), one of the most known lawyers in Philadelphia. This is because no other lawyers want to defend Beckett against his former employer. Miller will accept to represent Beckett despite being himself a homophobic.

Anthony Weiner was one of the most entertaining politicians on Twitter, but after he inadvertently sent out the crotch shot seen around the world, his career could very well be over. Meghan McCain wonders if politicians should be on Twitter at all, weighing the pros and cons of the most impulsive form of social networking. Plus, why her mom didn't want her to follow Weiner on Twitter.

I remember seeing Congressman Weiner's Twitter account before his scandal and I was impressed by his use of the hashtag. His account, unlike most other politicians, seemed like it was written by him and not his press secretary or member of his staff.

Three of America’s most momentary national figures are coming together for one evening of irrelevance: unsuccessful Senate candidate Joe Miller, Maricopa County Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, and Samuel “Joe The Plumber” Wurzelbacher. The three will star in “A Night with the Joe’s [sic],” a night of unspecified purpose sponsored by “The Campaign to Defeat Barack Obama,” the National Journal reports. Assuming you attend (if tickets aren’t sold out!), it’s important to come prepared with a thoughtful question. As a public service, we’ve listed each Joe’s recent activities (so you can think of your own questions), and provided you with a sample question (just in case you can’t).

Yesterday evening, write-in candidate and Republican incumbent senator Lisa Murkowski defeated G.O.P. nominee and Tea Party–darling Joe Miller in a protracted midterm race that persisted for more than two weeks. In the end, Miller’s plan to contest all ballots that contained “Murkowski” misspellings fell short, as did Operation: Alaskan Chaos, a Tea Party–backed attempt to sabotage Murkowski by encouraging Alaskans to run for Senate in order to clutter the list of write-in candidates given to voters. The New York Times reports: “Election workers counted more than 100,000 write-in votes in Juneau over the last week. More than 97 percent of the votes were for Ms. Murkowski, state election officials said. As Wednesday began, she led Mr. Miller by 10,400 votes with less than a thousand ballots left to count.”...

"It's never over until the count's done," he told Neil Cavuto on Fox News, claiming that he was only 2,000 votes behind Murkowski. "We owe it to the voters of the state of Alaska to continue the count, to make sure it's done properly." Cavuto cast doubt upon Miller's math, pointing out that it's nearly impossible for Miller to make up the supposed 2,000-vote gap, let alone the 10,000-vote gap that is said to exist. When asked point blank whether he would request a recount, Miller replied, "We may."...

Alaska’s time difference is such that it is still November 2 in the 49th state, and ballots in the closely contested Senate race are still being tallied. Currently, Republican nominee Joe Miller is a little more than 11,000 votes behind incumbent Lisa Murkowski, who challenged him as a write-in. The Hill reports: “Miller made up ground in Tuesday’s count of some 27,000 absentee votes. Miller netted around 2,100 votes, according to updated totals from the division of elections. Currently, the number of write-in votes leads Miller's vote total by 11,333 votes.” Miller, though, has sued the state’s lieutenant governor and division of elections after learning that some misspellings of “Murkowski” may be counted toward his opponent’s total. This, Miller argues, is incongruous with a state law that mandates that a vote will only be counted “if the oval is filled in for that candidate and if the name, as it appears...

For months, Republicans have been predicting that they were on track to make major gains in the midterm elections, and on Tuesday voters proved them right by handing the Gop major wins in the House of Representatives, as well as in governor's mansions and state houses across the country.
The most crucial pickups for the Republicans were in the House of Representatives, where Fox News projected that the Gop rolled up 55 wins for a commanding 239 seats to the Democrats' 183, more than enough to help set the agenda for the next two years.
That means that after becoming the first female Speaker of the House in 2007, Democrat Nancy Pelosi will step down in January to make way for a Republican speaker, which will more than likely be Ohio's John Boehner.

Levi Johnston: Palin Not Qualified for Presidency
Levi Johnston is once again going after his baby mama's mama -- telling TMZ he believes Sarah Palin is "not qualified" to be the next President of the United States of America.
Levi -- who's plotting his own quest for public office in Wasilla, Alaska -- is responding to a statement Palin made earlier this week in which she said she would run for Prez, "If there's nobody else to do it."
Johnston tells us, "That makes no sense because someone always runs for President" ... adding, "[Sarah] wouldn't go through with a campaign even if she was nominated."

So much for a re-reconciliation with Bristol ...

The inestimable Web sites Conservatives4Palin.com and BigGovernment.com and other organs of Joe Miller propaganda are encouraging all eligible Alaskans to enlist themselves as write-in U.S. senate candidates in Tuesday’s election. As Daily Intelligencer explains, on Wednesday, the state supreme court ruled that a list of all registered write-in candidates will be provided to any voter who asks for one one. “The court action is expected to aid Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s write-in bid and amounts to electioneering by the state, say supporters of Republican nominee Joe Miller,” the Anchorage Daily News reports. Political capital is running on empty. Constituent anger is boiling, and voter backlash is almost guaranteed this November. To ease some of that tension between candidates and voters, some mid-term campaigns are starting to change their typical strategy of mudslinging attack ads, with bold negative claims and a deep voice narrator bashing opponents. Instead, in the era of YouTube, campaigns are creating Internet memes and takeoffs of popular brands to capture a piece of their popularity.
Today, for example, Democratic congressional candidate Surya Yalamanchili ran his first TV spot: a blatant rip-off of Apple's iPad commercials. In the ad, a poorly-photoshopped iPad lists off the record of his opponent, Republican Rep. Jean Schmidt. It mostly confirms what we already know: that the Palins are vindictive, have a poor grasp of the English language, and are eyeing a 2012 presidential run. [Mudflats] • In other 2012 election news, Donald Trump told Fox News he is considering a run, and Bob Woodward told CNN that an Obama-Clinton ticket is “on...

Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski has poised herself to become the Alaskan Charlie Crist by launching a write-in campaign to keep her seat in November. Her former primary opponent Joe Miller reacted to the news that he had to defeat her a second time on last night's On the Record, where he told Greta van Susteren he wasn't completely surprised with her "stunning" decision, given the "fairly nasty voicemail" she left him after losing.

Bieber photo by Daniel Ogren/Flickr.Today, primary day, marks the conclusion of summer’s election season. (*Technically, Hawaii, which is a state, not a subsaharan African nation, has will hold its primary on Saturday.) This morning, races will commence in Delaware, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maryland, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. According to Politico, Delaware is arguably the most important state in the union today, a distinction that may not have applied since Delaware was the only state in the union. Representative Mike Castle faces the Tea Party–aligned Christine O’Donnell. Castle, Delaware’s former governor, has been an important figure in the state since the 60s, but O’Donnell’s held our interest since August 24, when the Tea Party’s Joe Miller, also beneficiary of Palinmania, defeated incumbent Lisa Murkowski in the Alaska’s Republican senatorial primary. Is O’Donnell the lower-48’s answer to Miller?...

Keith Olbermann has found some strange rhetoric in the interior memos of the Joe Miller campaign (who defeated Sen. Lisa Murkowski in the Alaska Republican primary. "So far," the note explained, "the Lord has always provided the money." Except there is now evidence that Miller's campaign has ties to K Street, and he's not the first Tea Party-affiliated candidate to fall in the grasp of the larger Gop.

The most exciting primary race from Tuesday surprisingly turned out to be the Gop Senate race in Alaska, where Sarah Palin-endorsed Joe Miller appears ready to unseat incumbent Lisa Murkowski. In a report today on the absentee ballots, Fox News anchor Gregg Jarrett compares the situation to when Al Franken was elected - and implying he stole the election.

Hi everyone, MattCanada here with another weekly dose of gay cinema. This week we're looking at Philadelphia, the Oscar winning courtroom drama, essentially the defining Hollywood response to the AIDS epidemic.
I first saw this film as a kid. I must have been about seven when I watched it with my parents and it was definitely my, and probably many other people's, introduction to AIDS. For me it continues to shape how I think about the virus, the stigma, and the epidemic. Longtime Companion opened a few years earlier but this was the first mainstream prestige film to deal with AIDS and homophobia. Having two big stars in Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington must have seemed like a big step for Hollywood. All of this is well and good, but rewatching the film for the first time in over a decade, I had serious problems with its filmic construction and especially its politics.

The New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies aren't exactly the fiercest of rivals, but there is sure to be blood — or maybe just some home runs, botched calls and heated arguments with umpires — when the two baseball teams collide for Game 1 of the World Series this evening (so long as the rain stays away that is!).
As New Yorkers and Philadelphians prepare for battle, we got to wondering about some of the other rivalries already in place between the two cities — in motion picture form, that is. I'm not necessarily talking about fictional competitions between NYC and Philly, so much as stacking movies set in those cities against one another.
Through that framework, you'd be surprised at how many competing movies there are between the Empire and Keystone States — just hit the jump and see the head-to-head match-ups for yourself!
