Wtf Happened to Buffy the Vampire Slayer?
Image
Can we separate the artist from their work? That is a question that people have been asking for years. How can we ignore horrendous actions, alleged or otherwise from creators who’s work has changed so many lives for the better? Sadly this question with new looks behind curtain of beloved works that have revealed disturbing surprises. It sucks this is the case for a TV series that was part of the television renaissance era

I of course am talking about Joss Whedon and the Buffy The Vampire Slayer TV show. To deny how important this series was, is to deny that the sky is blue. It was one of the first shows that created a para-social relationship with fans. Many of which would alter their lives forever. Forming friendships, sparking a passion in film making, and even letting them accept who they truly are.

So lets talk about a...

10 Unpopular TV Characters Everyone Eventually Realized Were Great All Along
Image
Audiences can be very quick to judge TV characters, to the point that their first impression can often turn out to be entirely wrong, with the realization that they were great all along. This can easily happen to characters who oppose the protagonist in some way, as viewers naturally root for the lead and see anyone who is blocking their goals as a threat. However, as the characters' motivations become clearer, everyone soon comes to the realization that they harshly and unfairly judged them.

Many of the best TV characters ever started off unpopular yet managed to redeem themselves throughout the series. In some cases, annoying TV characters managed to become fan favorites as viewers got to know and understand their backstories, motivations, and likable characteristics. The long-form nature of television has allowed for more nuanced portrayals of complex characters whose likable nature and positive traits only reveal themselves over...

7 Actors Who Almost Played Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Image
Buffy The Vampire Slayer was defined by Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy, making it hard to imagine anyone else in the role. Cordelia Chase played by Charisma Carpenter and Harmony by Mercedes McNab were crucial supporting characters. Katie Holmes and Natasha Lyonne were also considered for the role, showcasing the potential alternate paths for the series.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer was defined by the central role of Buffy, the protagonist and titular vampire slayer who audiences couldn't get enough of. For seven seasons, Sarah Michelle Gellar played Buffy, and it's almost impossible to envision another actress taking on the role. While recasting Buffy for a Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot is a fun exercise, it's unlikely that a new series would retread ground from the original series, as those episodes and seasons are iconic. However, things could have looked very different for the TV show if a different actor had been cast as Buffy.

‘Hatchet: Complete Collection’ Review – Adam Green’s Franchise Still Delivers the Bloody Goods
Image
“It’s not a remake. It’s not a sequel. And it’s not based on a Japanese one.”

Hatchet‘s festival tagline — a quote from a major studio’s rejection of the film — served as a rally cry for horror fans. Despite its roots planted firmly in practical effects-driven ’80s slashers a la Friday the 13th, Hatchet felt fresh and exciting when it arrived in 2006; a gory but lighthearted reprieve from torturous studio horror littered with janky CGI and cheap scares.

Willed into existence by writer-director Adam Green based on a character he conceived as an 8-year-old summer camper, the Hatchet franchise centers on Victor Crowley — the hulking, vengeful spirit of a deformed boy that haunts the swamps of New Orleans. Kane Hodder brings a similar physicality to the role as he did to Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th Parts VII-x, but Crowley is more ferocious. The casting...

Why Amanda Buckman Would Be the Perfect Wednesday Season 2 Villain
Image
Wednesday Season 1 introduces a variety of formidable villains for the titular heroine to face. One Addams Family villain unapologetically embodies privilege and conformity. This Addams Family villain continues to be a perfect foil for Wednesday Addams and could still offer an intriguing challenge for the macabre heroine in Season 2.

Wednesday Season 1 pits the titular heroine against a formidable group of adversaries, including a shape-shifting serial killer, the resurrected spirit of a genocidal pilgrim, and a seemingly benevolent teacher (played none other than former Wednesday Addams actor Christina Ricci) who turns out to be the most insidious monster of the lot. It's safe to say the hit Netflix series delivered more than enough villains for the Addams Family's tenacious daughter to handle, with more on the way for Season 2. They provide potent challenges for her to face, forcing her to think for herself and prevail without the support of her family.

Joss Whedon Had Two Rules For Making The Vampires In Buffy
Image
The show may have been called "Buffy The Vampire Slayer," but the chosen one (Sarah Michelle Gellar) fought all different types of monsters, not just the fangy, blood-sucky kind. For series creator Joss Whedon, this was to ensure his premise had enough to sustain itself in the transition from a movie to an ongoing TV series:

"Though ['Buffy'] had been a fun idea for a movie, I wasn't really sure if there was a whole series there, just about this girl going and killing vampires. So, I started to think about it and I came up with the notion of playing all sorts of horror movies in high school and making them really metaphors for how frightening and horrible high school is."

Whedon said as much in a 1998 interview (when "Buffy" had started its third season). In bringing these vampires to life onscreen, Whedon said there were two, contradictory rules: they had to look both demonic,...

The Best ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Villain Isn’t Who You Think
Image
There have been many villains throughout Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s run. Aside from monster of the week-style evils who only stuck around for a week, there were some big bads that had season-long arcs. Characters such as The Master (Mark Metcalf) in Season 1, Mayor Wilkins (Harry Groener) in Season 3, and more. Some villains just stick around in the heads of fans. Ones who, even after they’ve been defeated, leave a lasting presence on the series. That’s why the episode “Hush” is so beloved. The villains in it are terrifying and even though they’re defeated by the episode’s end, it’s hard to forget the terror they induced, leaving a long-lasting mark on the show. Buffy the Vampire Slayer may have been about Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) slaying vampires and vanquishing demons, but it was also quite good at creating endearing villains, such as Spike (James Marsters...

Angel Ending Explained: Let's Go To Work
Image
Much like its parent show "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel" relied heavily on metaphor. However, while "Buffy" dealt with the high school experience, only truly going dark in its later seasons, "Angel" always sought to tell more adult-oriented stories. The spin-off never quite reached the same heights of the original, but it came pretty damn close, and there are certain aspects of the series that were even stronger. For one, just about every character who made the jump from "Buffy" to "Angel" was the better for it. Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter), Wesley (Alexis Denisof), Faith (Eliza Dushku), and Darla (Julie Benz) all went from being relatively one-dimensional, to becoming some of the best characters in the entire Buffyverse. Even Harmony (Mercedes McNab) was vastly improved.

Perhaps the biggest revelation was Angel (David Boreanaz) himself. A broody hunk who was far more interesting when he actually went evil, Buffy's former beau was...

The 7 Best New Movies on Netflix in February 2022
Jackie Coogan, John Astin, Marie Blake, Ted Cassidy, Carolyn Jones, Lisa Loring, and Ken Weatherwax in The Addams Family (1964)
With winter storms still sweeping through the land, it might be nice to stay in and watch some movies on your streamer of choice. While Netflix is increasingly interested in its own original films, they are still committed to bringing you plenty of classic catalogue titles, including a whole bunch in February. It was hard to pick our favorites, but we tried anyway.

Below are the best new movies on Netflix in February 2022.

The Addams Family Paramount Pictures

There’s been so much “Addams Family”-related stuff since the two original theatrical films in the 1990s that it’s easy to forget just how good they both were. The first film, directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and co-written by Burton collaborators Larry Wilson and Caroline Thompson (and later re-written by Paul Rudnick), doesn’t have quite the same edge as the sequel but it did establish the world beautifully. This is...

‘Angel’ 20th Anniversary Reunion Panel Set for New York Comic-Con – Without David Boreanaz
David Boreanaz, Charisma Carpenter, and Glenn Quinn in Angel (1999)
The “Angel” cast will celebrate the show’s 20th anniversary with a panel at New York Comic-Con this fall. Well, minus Angel himself, that is.

On Tuesday, NYCC announced a reunion has been set with stars Charisma Carpenter, James Marsters, J. August Richards, Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker for the fan convention, which runs October 3-6. Noticeably absent from that lineup is David Boreanaz, who played the titular vampire detective on the Joss Whedon-created “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” spinoff.

Boreanaz previously hinted during a March appearance on “The Talk” there was something brewing for “Angel’s” upcoming 20th anniversary in October, but he told TheWrap last month that he didn’t “know what’s going to happen.”

“It’s funny, whether it’s the 10th or the 15th or the 20th,...

David Boreanaz Says ‘Angel’ Reunion Might Be ‘in the Works’ for 20th Anniversary (Video)

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2017 and its spinoff series, “Angel,” is hitting the big 2-0 itself this fall. And in honor of that momentous occasion, David Boreanaz says there is a possibility a reunion might be in the works.

“Well, you know, we’re coming up on our 20 years,” Boreanaz — who played the titular vampire detective on The WB series, after originating the role on “Buffy” — said on “The Talk” Tuesday, when asked if he’d be down for an “Angel” reunion.

“I mean that’s amazing to have been blessed with a show like that,” he continued. “And that’s really where I started my gig in this acting world. And I love that character. So I will say there may be something coming up. I don’t want to give away a lot. But I can say it’s 20 years coming up this fall,...

Rollback Review: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 5
And now we finally get to the best one of all. The true peak of Buffy. The Season where it truly was at its finest hour.

After a shaky Season Four, Buffy returned in style for its fifth season, constructing 22 episodes full of strong characters, a brilliant arc, heartbreaking moments and some of the best hours that the show ever produced. Whilst all the previous Seasons of Buffy had numerous good qualities, it’s fifth just seemed to have everything. From the intense, gripping story-arc of Season Two, to the consistently brilliant episodes of Season Three, to the superb stand-alone hours of Season Four, Season Five is an example of a show at full throttle. It’s brimming with confidence, it knows exactly where it’s taking the story – and explores new routes for our characters that we didn’t even think we’d see.

So, what makes Season Five so great?...

Complete Buffy reviews: The harsh light of day
One of the things that mark out both Buffy's fourth season and Angel's first is the cross-over episode. Even miles apart, it's inevitable that the paths of the former lovers will somehow cross, and the first instance of this comes only three episodes into the new run. Bridging the link between the two are a shiny bauble of vampire immortality, Oz, and a returning Spike, who's naturally on the hunt for this piece of valuable bling.

It's interesting to look at these two episodes again, back to back. Despite containing some of the familiar Buffy characters, monsters and perilous situations, it's clear that Angel's pitching towards a slightly older audience. Whereas Buffy The Vampire Slayer stays on the slower path and continues its gradual look at the perils of growing up, Angel impatiently leapfrogs the latter teenage years, headlong into the 20s. So its interesting seeing the...

The cast of Angel: 10 years on
Feature Sarah Dobbs 5 Mar 2014 - 07:00

Sarah digs into the post-Angel careers of David Boreanaz, Alexis Denisof, Amy Acker, Charisma Carpenter and more...

It’s been about a decade since the last episode of Angel, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off series about the vampire with a soul, aired. The final episode of season five, Not Fade Away, first appeared on Us television screens on 19 May 2004. That seems simultaneously like a very long time ago, and not very long ago at all, because time is vast and human brains are small and fallible, but it’s safe to say that in TV years, it’s a pretty long goddamned time.

The men and women behind the characters we used to spend one night a week with have gone on to other things – some bigger and better, others kind of rubbish – and unless you’re a particularly obsessive superfan, you...

Complete Buffy reviews: The Wish
[This episode review contains foreshadowing for future episodes, and the following review comments on this, though sometimes indirectly. Depending on your tolerance for spoilers, you may or may not wish to continue reading if you haven't finished watching the show.]

A big pot of gold delivered to your door. World peace. No more EastEnders on TV. Wishing may well be the most common pastime on Planet Earth, just inching ahead of backgammon and darts.

But as the old saying goes: “Be careful of what you wish for”. Cordelia's taking this advice on board a bit too late after new kid in town Anya (in reality, a scary, veiny demon) grants her wish of Buffy never coming to Sunnydale. This can only mean one thing: Alternate Dimension Time.

The Alternate Dimension is a common trope in fiction, in films such as It's A Wonderful Life. It's especially popular in science fiction. Doctor Who came up with Inferno, in which Jon Pertwee's Doctor found himself on a parallel Earth, just hours away from doomsday. Worse still, he had to battle with vicious, unkind counterparts of his friends, including Liz and the...

Complete Buffy reviews: Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered
Never mind a broken heart, Xander's in greater danger of all of his limbs getting smashed to pieces. Just your average Sunnydale Valentine's Day then.

If Phases presented Buffy's assertion that men are predatory ghouls, then Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered gleefully shows that women are just as capable of an axe-fuelled, hair-pulling rampage. Thanks to Amy's sketchy spell casting, Xander is finding that breaking Cordelia's heart is a tougher proposition than the token nutty chocolate in the box. As a result, the females of Sunnydale have fallen head over heels in love with Xander. But while this is Xander's ideal fantasy scenario on paper, it's considerably less rosy in reality.

Never let it be said that Buffy The Vampire Slayer ignores a special themed holiday. Christmas. Halloween. Thanksgiving. Valentine's Day is scrawled on the Buffy calendar with this smart little masterpiece from Marti Noxon. In true Buffy style, it's...

Medium Raw and a Wolf's Delight: A Movie Review
Director/writer: Andrew Cymek.

Cast: William B. Davis, John Rhys-Davies, Mercedes McNab, and Brigitte Kingsley.

Medium Raw aka Medium Raw: Night of the Wolf is a Canadian shot horror film. This feature was shown on television in 2010, with Anchor Bay Entertainment set to release this title on DVD August 16th. The film retells the ancient German legend of Little Red Riding Hood with a twist. Horror is always great for twist endings. Actor John Rhys-Davies is under utilized in his role and the updating of this children's tale is enhanced by the costume department. As well, Medium Raw introduces not one villain, but four. This is a slow building horror title, with some interesting action sequences in the final scenes.

This is the second film which has offed actor John Rhys-Davies in the first quarter of the film. The other film was Ferocious Planet (2011) and here Rhys-Davies plays Elliot Carbon.

New Release: Medium Raw: Night of the Wolf DVD
Medium Raw: Night of the Wolf, the latest serial killer thriller from the good people of Anchor Bay, will be issued on DVD on Aug. 16 for a list price of $22.98.

There's a killer on the loose in Medium Raw: Night of the Wolf.

Filmmaker Andrew Cymek is the triple-threat writer/director/star of the movie, which tells the story of a rookie cop (Cymek) who’s plagued by nightmares of his sister’s death at the hands of a serial killer years earlier. That the killer was never captured doesn’t help! But while investigating a recent murder with similarities to that of his sister’s, Johnny and his partner snap into action and capture the culprit, known as “The Wolf.” Sadly, a happy ending is put on hold due to a subsequent power outage at the local asylum housing “The Wolf” and a bunch of other psychos, resulting in their escape.

DVD Review: Twelve (Xii)
Twelve (Xii)

Stars: Steven Brand, Michael Leydon Campbell, Jeremy Fitzgerald, Emily Hardy, Vanessa Long, Mercedes McNab | Written and Directed by Michael A. Nickles

Leonard Karlsson, convicted for an unspecified crime against a minor is released on parole after five years. Horribly disfigured by other inmates whilst in prison, his face horribly mutilated, he seeks revenge on the 12 jurors who convicted him.

Michael Nickles’ film is a fairly standard horror flick, that while not reinventing the wheel, does come up with flashes of invention within a tried and tested formula.

The opening credits deal with both Karlsson’s crime, conviction and the attack on his person. Glitchy, stylistic, it never specifies exactly what he was accused of, or even if he was guilty. A character later refers to him as a “baby fucker”, but none of the jurors ever discuss the case. It’s a canny decision, preventing unneccesary exposition and...

Twelve (Xii) DVD Review
An opening montage sets up the plot of Twelve (aka Xii), although not in a particularly substantial or satisfying way. Leonard Karlsson is a man convicted (rightfully or wrongly) of an unspecified crime involving children and, whilst in prison, his face is mutilated by fellow inmates. Upon release Leonard decides to kidnap and skin the faces of the twelve jurors who sealed his fate, replicating the torture he received.

After the somewhat dark opening montage and credits the tone shifts to a happy ‘just married’ couple driving out of Vegas. Suddenly a truck pulls up alongside side them and a shotgun blast blows up the groom’s head. Splatter fans beware though as after this early scene the gorier sequences are held back until the final act. Lacking suspense or tension this sequence appears to be played for laughs and a minor amount of shock but the rest of the...

DVD Round-Up: American: The Bill Hicks Story, Twelve
Bill Hicks’ life and career was cruelly cut short by cancer at the age of thirty-two. Since 1994, the year of his death, the man’s standing has rocketed from world-class comedian to almost mythic status. Some argue he was a prophet. Please note he died the same age as Jesus of Nazareth. Hicks thought of himself more as “Chomsky with dick jokes”.

Matthew Harlock and Paul Thomas’ energetic documentary incorporates pain-staking animation and took the film-makers almost three years to complete. More of a celebration than a warts-and-all character study it shines as a brilliant memorial to a completely unique talent.

This two disc DVD release (also on blu-ray) boasts over five hours of additional footage. Everything but the kitchen sink – and then the kitchen sink! American: The Bill Hicks Story offers something for those who idolise him and newcomers. There’s plenty of scenes, too, of the comedian’s...

Blu-Ray Review: Adam Green’s ‘Hatchet’ Continues to Divide Audiences
Chicago – Is Adam Green the next great horror director? There are many fans of the genre who love to make the case of the current-and-future importance of Green, pointing to films like “Frozen,” “Spiral,” and, most of all, “Hatchet” as their evidence. To some, including this horror junkie, the jury is still out. Watching Green’s breakthrough film, now available on Blu-ray, it’s easy to see what people adore about Green and what he still needs to work on.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0

Horror fans love filmmakers who express the passion they feel for the genre and there’s no denying Adam Green’s commitment to scream queens, slasher icons, and glorious gore. It comes through in every frame of the tale of Victor Crowley, a maniacal creation that wanders the swamps of New Orleans looking for hapless victims to eviscerate. Co-starring Joel David Moore (“Avatar”) and featuring cameos from horror icons Tony Todd,...

Thirst and Survival: A Movie Review
Thirst DVD Artwork

Director: Jeffery Scott Lando.

Writers: Joel Newman, and Kurt Volkan.

First Look Studios is an independent movie company based in Century City, California, with over a thousand titles in their film catalogue. This studio specializes in DVD and television and was previously a subsidiary of the now dissolved Ventura Distribution. One of First Look's latest titles is the straight to DVD Jeffery Scott Lando directed Thirst. The film was released on this format June 22nd and this film stars the very recognizable Lacey Chabert ("Party of Five"). Chabert is no longer an awkward adolescent, but a full grown women as the first scene suggests. Thirst is an important entry in the survivalist horror genre for showing the brutality of California's desert. The film is also important for showing man's or, from a reductionist viewpoint, a person's gene's survivalist tendencies.

The film correctly focuses in on four young...
