Steven Spielberg’s ‘Ready Player One’ Gears Up for $42 Million in Four-Day Opening Weekend

Steven Spielberg’s ‘Ready Player One’ Gears Up for $42 Million in Four-Day Opening Weekend
Ready Player One” looks to come out victorious at the box office over the Easter holiday weekend.

Steven Spielberg’s latest film is eyeing $38 million to $42 million over its four-day opening weekend. Given a light weekend of new releases, that number would likely be enough for “Ready Player One” to dominate the domestic box office.

Warner Bros.’ nostalgic fantasy adventure, which currently holds an 82% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, gets an early start on Easter weekend by debuting with Wednesday night previews at 3,500 locations. Starting Thursday, it then expands to 4,200 locations, while launching day and date internationally in 62 markets. Tracking on the film, with a reported budget between $150 million and $175 million, is down slightly from initial estimates of $45 million to $55 million over its four-day opening.

Based on Ernest Cline’s 2011 novel, “Ready Player One” is set in an elaborate virtual reality world full of pop culture totems from the ’80s.

Review: Batman: The Brave and the Bold The Complete Third Season

  • Comicmix
Well, it’s about time. For the last twenty-five years or so, we’ve had one animated Batman series after another but to be honest only two are really good: Batman the Animated Series and Batman: The Brave and the Bold. The latter has been slowly coming out on Blu-Ray with season one in 2013 and season two in 2015. This month, we’re getting the third and final season and the good news is that it is as entertaining as remembered.

After increasingly odd interpretations of Batman, Warner Animation decided to go retro and bring back the Batman of the 1960s, who was not afraid to operate in daylight and would partner with just about anyone in a mask as the need arose. Producer James Tucker saw to it that it honored the comic the series took its name from while modernizing it with contemporary characters and characterizations. The result was

You’re Not a Nerd: The sad co-opting of geek culture

Anghus Houvouras on the sad co-opting of geek culture…

Growing up, I was a nerd. An actual nerd. A computer loving, socially awkward small-for-my-age video game addict who struggled to fit it. This was back in the 1980’s when the computers were Commodore 64s and the video games were Atari. If I was a character in Revenge of the Nerds, I would have been Gilbert. Who am I kidding. I didn’t have an ounce of Anthony Edwards charisma. I was probably more akin to Lewis. Hold up. Lewis got the girl in the end, which rules out that comparison. I was never good at math and my grades weren’t good, so I guess that made me Booger.

At some point during the 21st Century, the words ‘nerd’ and ‘geek’ migrated from social stigma to a badge of honor. I see so many people proudly referring to themselves as geeks.

Aisha Tyler is heading towards “Axis” as her first feature directing gig, thanks to a week-old Kickstarter campaign she launched to fund the thriller.

Plans are to start shooting for nine days in Los Angeles in June. The cast includes Emily Bett Rickards (“Arrow”), Jerry Ferrara (“Entourage”), Amber Nash (“Archer”), Paula Malcomson (“Ray Donovan”), Ted McGinley, Jonathan Sadowski and Jean-Luc Bilodeau.

Emmett Hughes wrote the script about an Irish actor, set on the morning he is set to star in a career-changing blockbuster film. As he tries to live down his rocky past, he confronts a series of devastating events that threaten his sobriety, his loved ones, and ultimately his life.

“Because we have such limited time, the lead actor is learning and rehearsing the entire film like one would a play, and that’s how we’ll shoot it,” Tyler said. “He’s the only actor on screen for

"Hey, what other old shows could we bring back?"

That's a question being asked all over Hollywood, now that Fuller House worked America up into a nostalgia frenzy. A little credit is due to the Disney Channel's Girl Meets World, which proved that these old shows could benefit from being bumped into the modern era and given a new generation of kids who need to learn life lessons. It's well into its reboot season, but right now Fuller House is the revival show that's generated buzz, press and more than a few conversations about pop culture nostalgia.
