At age 20 he found his first stage work, spending three seasons with the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool.
Joined the National Theatre Company of Great Britain in 1966.

Wrote one play "Merry Christmas, Mr. Burbage" in 1998 in honor of the 400th of the creation of the Globe Theatre.
