Her role in the controversial art film In the Realm of the Senses (1976) as historical murderess Sada Abe had a negative effect on her career. She began to receive hostile treatment from the Japanese public, couldn't land very many acting roles and was even flat out refused for auditions. She eventually escaped to live in France and abandoned her acting career.
