Why ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Creator Picked Tom Petty’s ‘American Girl’ to End the Season
It was the final gut punch delivered in Season 1 of “The Handmaid’s Tale:” Tom Petty’s “American Girl” thundering out as Elisabeth Moss’ Offred faced an uncertain future with a defiant smile.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” is just one instance of classic Petty tunes punctuating pivotal scenes in movies and TV series. The musician, who died Monday at the age of 66, had a knack for capturing the essence of people, places and emotions in a plain-spoken way that made them a perfect accent for narrative storytelling.

“American Girl” was one of the songs on the playlist in the ear of “Handmaid’s Tale” executive producer Bruce Miller as he wrote the first episode of the Hulu drama series more than a year ago. Miller has been a fan of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for years, but it was his kids who more recently reminded him of the musician’s canon.

Applications open for 2017 Heath Ledger Scholarship

Australians in Film has opened applications for the ninth annual Heath Ledger Scholarship.

Established in memory of Ledger, the prize is awarded to an emerging Aussie actor between aged between 18-35 years. The recipient will receive Us$10,000 and two return airfares to La.

Last year's winner, Ashleigh Cummings stars in the upcoming Kiwi feature Pork Pie, distributed by StudioCanal later this year.

‘Hacksaw Ridge,’ ‘La La Land,’ ‘Moana’ Win Mpse Golden Reel Awards
Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge” earned the top two sound editing awards Sunday night at the 64th Mpse Golden Reel Awards, while Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land” and Disney’s “Moana” took musical and animation honors.

“The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble” and “Warcraft: The Beginning” won for documentary and score.

“Hacksaw Ridge” now becomes the favorite to beat “La La Land” in the Oscar battle.

TV winners included “Westworld” (for both long form and short form FX/Foley), “The Night of” “Part 1 The Beach,” “Penny Dreadful III” “Ebb Tide,” “Stranger Things,” and “The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again,” and “Mozart in the Jungle.”

The Filmmaker and Career Achievement Awards were presented to Guillermo del Toro and Harry Cohen.

Aacta has named artist and director Lynette Wallworth as the recipient of this year.s Byron Kennedy Award.

The award, which honours George Miller.s original filmmaking partner and Mad Max co-creator Byron Kennedy, celebrates "outstanding creative enterprise within the screen industry. It is given to an individual or organisation whose work embodies innovation, vision and the pursuit of excellence."

Wallworth is known for her use of virtual reality and the mixing of technology with art. Her installations and films have been shown at the World Economic Forum, the Lincoln Centre for the Performing Arts and The Smithsonian.

An inside joke on the set of Baz Luhrmann’s “The Get Down” proposed an alternate title for the new Netflix series. Because the troubled production had started, stopped, and stalled so many times as scripts were written, tossed, and rewritten, some writers had taken to calling the show “The Shut Down.”

Over the two-and-a-half years since the hip-hop-focused project was set up at Netflix, Luhrmann went through two showrunners, numerous writers, and no small amount of strain with producer Sony Pictures Television. Production of the 12-episode season, the first half of which premieres Aug. 12, went well over the original budget of about $7.5 million per episode and wound up costing at least $120 million overall, with New York state tax incentives factored in, according to sources.

That makes “The Get Down,” Luhrmann’s first TV series, among the most expensive in history. It’s a huge bet even for Netflix, which has disrupted Hollywood with a seemingly limitless
