Plot: 1908. Chief (Mario Van Peebles) returns from years of hiding in Mexico to claim stolen reparations gold hidden in the hills of Montana but is chased by Angel (William Mapother), whose rationale to the gold leaves a trail of dead bodies.
Review: Mario Van Peebles is in the enviable position of being a writer, director and actor who can make the kinds of movies he wants with the people he wants. He was able to gain recognition on his own merit, outside of his father’s work, as he appeared in films like Heartbreak Ridge with Clint Eastwood, Ali with Will Smith, as well as cult classics like Gunmen which co-stars Christopher Lambert. He would work with him again in Lambert’s franchise sequel, Highlander: The Final Dimension. Plus, Van Peebles would gain acclaim as a director with the films he’s pulled double duty on — such titles as New Jack City...

If Sergio Leone had ever signed on to make one of those ‘70s Blaxploitation oaters that once provided steady employment for Fred Williamson, it likely would have looked and sounded much like “Outlaw Posse,” a wildly uneven but cumulatively entertaining shoot-‘em-up that finds Mario Van Peebles doing triple duty as director, screenwriter and star. Quadruple duty, actually, if you count his credit as an executive producer.
“Outlaw Posse” has nothing to do with Van Peebles’ previous entry in this genre, 1993’s wild and woolly “Posse,” which suggests the multitasking filmmaker is tipping his Stetson to the multitude of ‘60s Spaghetti Westerns that, ahem, borrowed titles and eponymous characters from better known yet totally unrelated horse operas. But, then again, maybe not. Indeed, the film will probably be enjoyed most by folks not given to undue consideration of such trifling matters as lineage, logic and arrant anachronisms.

Mario Van Peebles made a big mark on cinema following in his father’s footsteps, Melvin Van Peebles, to be a unique, prominent voice for the African-American community in cinema. He would make many appearances as an actor, including working with fellow gunslinger Clint Eastwood on Heartbreak Ridge, as the sword-wielding Kane in Highlander: The Final Dimension, and taking on the monumental task of portraying Malcolm X in the Michael Mann film, Ali. However, in 1991, New Jack City, which co-stars Ice-t, would put Van Peebles on the map as a director, and he would parlay his run with movies like Panther and the 1993 western film, Posse, in which he also starred.
Peeble returns to the Western genre in a semi-sequel to his 1993 movie that also sports an ensemble of impressive names. Outlaw Posse has Van Peebles working both in front and behind the camera again, and would even have him...

Reach for the sky cause Mario Van Peebles has returned to the old West! In 1993, Mario Van Peebles dabbled in the Western genre with Posse, which he had written, directed, and starred in. Now, Peebles has gotten back into the director’s chair for a new feature he wrote called Outlaw Posse. The trailer has now been released courtesy of Quiver Distribution and features Mario Van Peebles acting alongside his son, Mandela, who also plays his son in the movie. This keeps the tradition of the Van Peebles filmmaking lineage rolling along as Mario was also heavily involved with his father, Melvin Van Peebles’ film career. Mario would even make a biopic where he portrayed his own father with the film Baadasssss!, which is a play on the title of Melvin’s famous movie Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song.

"Whatever you two geniuses scheming up, count me in!" Quiver Distr. has revealed an official trailer for a kooky, zany western thriller comedy titled Outlaw Posse, arriving in theaters in March. It's the latest film directed by and written by and starring actor / filmmaker Mario Van Peebles, son of the legendary Melvin Van Peebles. This kind of feels like Van Peebles trying to create a modern update on Blazing Saddles, but it doesn't have the same comedic genius as that film. In the untamed Wild West of 1908, men in power take advantage of an unfair world. Renegade cowboy Chief, eager to restore balance, assembles a daring group of outcasts and saddles up on a cross-country odyssey to reclaim stolen gold in unsettled territory. The big ensemble features William Mapother, John Carroll Lynch, D.C Young Fly, Mandela Van Peebles, Amber Reign Smith, Neal McDonough, Allen Payne, Cam Gigandet, and M. Emmet Walsh,...

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering The Grudge (2004) was Written and Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
If there was one thing the early noughties had in an abundance, especially within the horror genre, it was remakes. We were graced with reboots, or re-imaginings, whatever you want to call them, of the likes of Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead, The Hills Have Eyes, The Amityville Horror, House of Wax, Rob Zombie’s Halloween remake from 2007 and The Ring. However, despite the decent quality of those examples, well most of them, one thing that stands out in the film we’re focusing on today, The Grudge (watch it Here), is the fact that the original’s director, Takashi Shimizu, chose to also take on the remake. In 2002 the aforementioned The Ring,...

In 1993, Mario Van Peebles dabbled in the Western genre with Posse. Peebles took after his father, Melvin Van Peebles, who was a notable filmmaker in the blaxploitation genre in the 1970s. Mario appeared as an actor in films like Rappin’, Heartbreak Ridge starring Clint Eastwood, and the infamous Jaws: The Revenge, which featured an apathetic Michael Caine. He would also head up his own projects as a writer and director, much like his father. One of the more popular films Peebles would be known for is the 90s street crime classic, New Jack City.
Peebles is returning to the director’s chair for a new feature he wrote called Outlaw Posse. The film is a Western that bears no connection to the similarly titled Posse. Highland Film Group has picked up the distribution and has shared a first look at the film with a new picture exclusively shared by Variety.

This article contains spoilers for "Yellowjackets" season 2. Of every character in season 2 of "Yellowjackets," the bubbly, eccentric Crystal (Nuha Jes Izman) is perhaps the strangest. She pops up in the middle of the season 2 premiere and unexpectedly develops a connection with Misty (Samantha Hanratty), and it's immediately clear the two are destined to be BFFs.
When Crystal confides in Misty how she "ate" her twin sister in the womb, Misty's riveted, and she's never seemed happier than when Crystal encouraged her to try acting. The two are perfect for one another, which only further raises the question: where's Crystal been this whole time? Why are they only now hitting it off, when they've been stuck in the same cabin together for months? Both the character of Crystal and the actress playing her are completely new, but she's hardly alone. A handful of other background characters have technically been there the whole time,...

When Todd Field's debut feature, "In the Bedroom," premiered at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival, it was heralded as an instant American classic. Based on Andre Debus' 1979 short story "Killings," this tale of grief-stricken parents (Sissy Spacek and Tom Wilkinson), who resolve to kill the murderer (William Mapother) of their only son (Nick Stahl) when they realize the man will be charged at most with accidental manslaughter, owes a great deal to Ingmar Bergman's "The Virgin Spring" and Wes Craven's grindhouse riff "The Last House on the Left." It is a film of quiet anguish, one that allows Spacek and Wilkinson to fully inhabit their devastated characters as they try to pick up the pieces. The constant presence of their child's killer, who's out on bail and hardly keeping a low profile around their small town, ultimately becomes too much to bear. Instead of tearing each other apart with long-simmering resentments,...

Although there is much to admire in “On Sacred Ground,” the first dramatic feature by environmental activist documentarians Josh and Rebecca Tickell, this technically polished indie effort is overall more admirable in its intent than compelling in its narrative. And there’s really no way of getting around the fact that many viewers will be put off by the abundance of “white savior melodrama” in a movie putatively focused on 2016 protests by Native Americans and their allies against construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.
To be sure, it can be argued that telling the story through a non-Indigenous protagonist’s point of view is an efficient way to expose a wider audience to pressing social issues about land use, water rights and cultural imperialism as the lead character gets his eyes opened and his conscience stoked and blah, blah, blah. Trouble is, the movie places so much emphasis in so many scenes on the professional,...

Exclusive: Shout! Studios has acquired all North American rights to the feature documentary Refuge from levelFILM, Katie Couric Media and Artemis Rising Foundation. The multi-platform entertainment distribution and production arm of Shout! Factory plans to release the film in theaters and across all major digital platforms early next year.
Directed and produced by award winners Erin Bernhardt and Din Blankenship, Refuge is set in the most diverse square mile in America — Clarkston, Georgia — and follows a Syrian Kurd, a former Klansman, and a town of refugees who seek belonging in a country that blames them for its problems. Swimming against the current of an increasingly polarized and isolated America, each must decide whether they will risk knowing and being known by those who oppose them. Ultimately, Refuge uncovers what is possible when we leave the security of our tribes, and what is at stake for our country if we don’t.

The “Mission: Impossible” films are undoubtedly Tom Cruise’s bread and butter — the franchise helped propel the now 56-year-old actor into an action star.
But Cruise hasn’t gone at it alone. In addition to Ving Rhames — the only other actor to appear in every “M:i” film — and the likes of Simon Pegg and Michelle Monaghan, the 22-year-old franchise has seen a number of big-name, or otherwise surprising actors, choose to accept the mission of starring alongside Tom Cruise.
Here are 19 of the actors you may have forgotten, or didn’t even realize had a role in the “M:i” franchise:

The CW has released a full batch of promotional images for next week's episode of Supergirl, and they are quite revealing indeed. Not only do they give us another glimpse of Mehcad Brooks decked out as The Guardian (wasn't the costume white originally?), but they also feature William Mapother (Lost) as a character named Dr. Rudy Jones, who DC fans will recognize as the alter-ego of the villainous Parasite. You can see a few more pics over at Kryptonsite.com. The Guardian Debuts In National City — The Guardian debuts to lend a hand after a parasite alien drains Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) of her power. Mon-El (Chris Wood) considers a less than desirable new career which then leads him to contemplate his motives. Alex (Chyler Leigh) struggles with a new reality. Andrew Kreisberg and Caitlin Parris wrote the script based on the story by Greg Beranti. The episode was directed by...

What would you do if you could see the moment of your own death? Would you try to change it? Come to terms with your own mortality? Party as if tomorrow might never come? Well, if your immediate answer was “Die anyway, but with my body in a weirdly artistic position,” you might already be a cast member of Tell Me How I Die, a new horror movie that smooshes together Final Destination, Flatliners, and a little bit of Sandra Bullock’s weepy Premonition. (Our condolences, by the way.)
Centering on a bunch of college-age kids who start having prophetic visions of their own deaths after signing up for a drug trial, the film stars Lost’s William Mapother as the doctor overseeing the experiments, along with Virginia Gardner, who, between this and last year’s Michael Bay-produced Project Almanac, has apparently become the go-to gal for setting right...

Straddling the grey area between found footage and faux documentary, The Atticus Institute purports to investigate the events leading to the sudden closure of an underfunded centre for parapsychological research in 1976, and the disappearance, maybe even demise, of its founder Dr Henry West (William Mapother). Present-day interviews with West's former colleagues and family as well as with the government personnel who became involved in the case are interspersed with footage documented at the time. The picture that emerges is of a group of young, committed 'fringe' scientists slowly building statistical evidence of paranormal abilities in their test subjects, despite setbacks from the occasional fraudster. Seeking their own miracle worker to rival the Soviet Union's Nina Kulagina, they eventually find one in Judith Winstead (Rya...

For over 40 years now, tales of demonic possession have been a faithful staple of horror movies. At least one major release each year dealing with a character – usually a young woman – struggling to shake off a particularly pesky poltergeist, spirit or even Satan itself, often with the help of an in/experienced clergyman.
As such, the market for these movies has become saturated with some pretty samey fare. Which is why it’s somewhat refreshing (if not entirely novel) to see The Atticus Institute tackle the familiar subject matter as a faux-documentary/period found footage piece. We start with a familiar scene – an impending exorcism taking place in a dimly-lit, possibly subterranean scientific facility – that naturally goes pear-shaped and are then introduced to the...

While found footage horror movies have recently began exploiting current technologies in more gleefully bizarre and enthralling ways, that hasn’t stopped filmmakers from uncovering musty reels of old-school possession footage that detail some of the “earliest” recorded cases of terror. The Atticus Institute is one such film, rewinding the clock back for a chilling History Channel-esque special that splices government-conspiracy-spilling talking heads with previously unreleased documentary footage. Writer/Director Chris Sparling understands an entire film can’t be built on VHS-quality pictures alone – despite being a sneaky advantage that hides outdated special effects – but scares are still hard to come by thanks to speedy camera-swapping whenever tension mounts at its highest peak, making the film an easy, breezy, but out-of-date spooker.

Chicago – “Blackhat” is a hacker’s auctioneer of high-tech and low-tech genre jolts, but its construction provides a thrill of its own - that of witnessing the next era of the action movie. With “Blackhat,” director Michael Mann introduces the new standards for the everlasting genre as it continues to reflect modern anxieties, giving leading roles to two entities that Hollywood has previously treated as supporting acts, hackers and the nation of China. Incredibly on-the-moment, “Blackhat” recognizes that computer whizzes are becoming the physical heroes our connected world needs, and China is the partner that Hollywood will increasingly rely on for business, especially in selling films that look like “Blackhat.”
Mann’s film is the story of a co-investigation between the United States and China. A Hong Kong nuclear power plant and Chicago’s Mercantile Trade Exchange have been attacked, nonetheless by a no-name, no-motive menace who has hacked into their systems.

Do you like movies about secret government institutes, conspiracies, psychics and scientists that push the boundaries of human understanding? Good, we do, too. That's why it's easy for us to recommend a smart new horror movie called The Atticus Institute, which hits Blu-ray, DVD and Video On Demand platforms next week Written and directed by Chris Sparling (who wrote Buried and Atm), The Atticus Institute is about Dr. Henry West (William Mapother, who is always great to see), a scientist in the '70s who ran a program meant to test people's supernatural abilities. Over the years a few of his test subjects exhibit some amount of Esp promise, but everything is turned upside down when they come across a patient named Judith who is by far the most impressive...

Chicago – A speedy film project can take about a year from conception to final cut; director Michael Mann’s wired-in thriller “Blackhat” might as well have been written, shot, and cut last month. Not just because of its epilogue to the rise and defeat of the Guardians of Peace, but for its modernity.
This is a tale of headline action specifically for January 16, 2015 and onward, in our new period of cyber terror.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
A thoroughly international project that reckons China’s importance to the American industry, “Blackhat” is the story of a co-investigation between the United States and China. A Hong Kong nuclear power plant and Chicago’s Mercantile Trade Exchange have been attacked, nonetheless by a no-name, no-motive menace who has hacked into their systems. A Chinese official named Chen Dawai (Leehom Wang) works alongside cyberterrorism agents in the FBI (played by Viola Davis and John Ortiz) to track the menace’s previous coding.

Universal and Legendary have just premiered a brand new trailer for Michael Mann's upcoming movie Blackhat, a cyber-thriller serving as Mann's first film in six years and it comes with an early January release if you can believe that. Personally I'm hoping Universal and Legendary sees this as an opportunity to release a quality film during the typical dumping ground of the release schedule where we're typically watching fourth-rate studio releases and expanding awards contenders. The flick stars Chris Hemsworth as a furloughed convict, working with his American and Chinese partners as they hunt a high-level cybercrime network from Chicago to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta. There is very little on paper that's been said about the movie and the cast isn't exactly big names as Viola Davis is probably the biggest co-star along with the likes of William Mapother, Holt McCallany, Tang Wei and Wang Leehom.

Chris Hemsworth is the Sexiest Man Computer Hacker Alive in Michael Mann's upcoming cyberthriller "Blackhat." Hemsworth stars as Nicholas Hathaway, a dangerous hacker who's sprung from jail by the government to help them track down an even more dangerous hacker. This other dude has already taken down a Chinese nuclear reactor, and his global reach is alarming both the Us and Chinese governments, who are working together to stop him before his next attack. Apparently, Hathaway has kept up with the latest hacking trends and techniques while he was in jail because he gets right to work tracking down this mysterious code master - but can Hathaway stop him before he wreaks even more havoc?
As an early adopter of high-def digital filmmaking, Mann has some techie inclinations himself, at least when it comes to filmmaking. Hemsworth told Yahoo, "He has such a detail to prep, to schedule, and a way of working.
