Frankie Manning was born on May 26, 1914 in Jacksonville, Florida, USA as Frank Benjamin Manning. He is known for his work on Hellzapoppin' (1941), The Spirit Moves: A History of Black Social Dance on Film (1987) and The Savoy King: Chick Webb & the Music That Changed America (2012). He was married to Gloria Holloway. He died on April 27, 2009 in Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA.

Teaching Lindy-Hop dancing all over the world since the 1980s.
Was a charter member of Whitey's Lindy Hoppers, a dance performance team that performed in movies, like Hellzapoppin' (1941).
Used to dance at the Savoy Ballroom, in New York, and was friends with great jazz musicians and singers, such as Ella Fitzgerald, Chick Webb, Duke Ellington and Count Basie.
Performed the first "airstep" (aerial maneuver) in a dance competition, forever changing swing dancing.
Served in WW2, at one point was stationed in Paupa, New Guinea
Won Broadway's 1989 Tony Award as Best Choreographer for "Black and Blue", along with his collaborators Cholly Atkins, Henry LeTang and Fayard Nicholas.
Father of Charles Young, Frank Manning and Marion Price.
Also, has a son from a previous relationship.
